SRI LANKA STANDARD 573: 1999 une 69 (083.74) METHOD OF MEASUREMENT OF BUILDING WORKS (FIRST REVISION) SRI LANKA STANDARDS INSTITUTION METHOD OF MEASUREMENT OF BUILDING WORKS (FIRST REVISION) SLS $73 +1999 Prepared On Behalf of SRI LANKA STANDARDS INSTITUTION by ‘THE INSTITUTE FOR CONSTRUCTION TRAINING 8 DEVELOPMENT (ICTAD) SRI LANKA STANDARDS IN No. 17, Victoria Pl Ehitigala Mawatha, Colombo 08, SRILANKA sTETUTION Sis s73: 1999 SRILANKA STANDARD METHOD OF MEASUREMENT OF BUILDING WORKS (FIRST REVISION) PREAMBLE. “The Sri Lanka Standard Method of Measurement of Building Works (SLS $73) was first developed on a request made by National Meitic Conversion Authority. and was published in 1982 on the recommendations ofthe Civil Engineering Divisional Committee. “This isthe first revision of SLS $73 : 1982, This revised standard was prepared by a Technical Committee eppointed by the Institte for Construction ‘Training and Development in association with the ri Lanka Standards Insticusion and was authorized for adoption and publication as a Sti Lanka Standard by the Council of the Se: Lanka Standards Institution on 1999-08-08, “The constitution of the Technical Committee and the relevant Working Committees, Advisory Committees are given in the foreword to the standard ‘Measurement occupies a very important place in the planning and execution of any building work from the time of first estimate to tinal completion of the project and sotlement of payments. “The methods followed for such measurements are not uniform, and considerable differences exist between the practices followed by different construction agencies and state sector onpanizations. While it is recognized that each system of measurement has to be specifically related to the administraive and. financial ‘oreaniaations within the institution responsible for tho work, an unification of various systems at the technical level has been faccepled as desirable. This standard attempts to fulfil this need. It deals withthe method of measurement of building works and applies equally to the preparation of estimates and bills of quantities and to site measurements. It provides guide lines in carying ‘at this work using metric units only SLS 573: 1999 ‘This revision includes sections dealing with paving, glazing and mechanical installations, and is a comprehensive, complete document. It contains twenty two work sections. The classification table arrangement of this standard and the content was greatly influenced by the current practice in Sri Lanka and the following publications: 48) The present SLS. 573: 1982 Method of Measurement of Building Works : 'b) Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement (Second Edition) ofthe Institution of Civil Engineers of United Kingdom: ©) SMM7 : Standard Method of Measurement of building Works of Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Building Employers Confederation of United Kingdom; and 4) Model Bill of Quantities prepared by the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (WA Chapter) - First edition In the application of this standard, clarifications in the interpretation may arise. In such instances, assistance from the Sri Lanka Standards Institution should be sought. ‘The initiative taken by the Institute for Construction, Training and Development to revise this standard, and the contribution made in this connection is gratefully acknowledged. This document has been prepared by THE INSTITUTE FOR CONSTRUCTION TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT (ICTAD) For THE SRI LANKA STANDARDS INSTITUTION 1S 573 :PIRST REV 1999 FORWARD eI o1 OF BULLDING WORKS Sri-tanka did not have a standard method oF measurenent of building works prior to S568, though there was an attempt in 1950 which could be termed as the first form of the method of measurenent in Sri-Lanka Rowever in 963, ehe iret SriLankan Standard Method of Measurement was developed.
