Integrated Math Notes: Solving Two-Step Equations II

Obj: Solve two-step equations (part 2).

(It is important to remember when solving equations that PEMDAS does
not apply. In fact, not only do we use opposite operations, but also the
regular order of operations is reversed!)
Example 1
Solve and check the equation:
w 29
9
8

Solution
Note: Since the fraction bar goes all the way across, we multiply first.
8

w 29
8

98

First Multiply

w 29 72
29 29
w 101

Then Add

Check:
101 29
8

72
8

9=9

First Subtract

Then Divide

Example 2
Solve and check the equation:
8 3n = 7.
Solution
(Question: What operation should we use to cancel the 8?
Answer: At first glance, it looks like we should be adding. But the
minus sign does not go with the 8. Since the 8 is positive, we will
subtract.)

Integrated Math Notes: Solving Two-Step Equations II

8 3n 7
8
8
Note that the minus sign goes with the number after it, the 3, not the 8.
3 n 15
3

Remember to bring down the minus sign as a negative sign.

n=5
Check:
8 3(5) = 7
8 15 = 7
7 = 7
Problem 1
Solve and check the equation:
4v 16
14
6

Solution
6

Check:
4v 16

14 6

6
4v 16 84
16 16
4 v 68
4
4
v 17

Problem 2

4 17 16
6

14

68 16
14
6
84
14
6

14 = 14

Integrated Math Notes: Solving Two-Step Equations II

Solve and check the equation:
9 5n = 71.
Solution

Check:
9 5n 71
9
9
5 n 80
5
5
n 16

9 5(16) = 71
9
80 = 71
71 = 71
