Study done in the mid-1960s at the University of Chicago by researcher Mihaly
Csikszentmihalyi to better understand the nature of concentration and optimal performance
Optimal experiences are difficult to understand and can be mystical in experience and
motivation

ELEMENTS OF FLOW

Balance Between Challenge and Skill (developmentally appropriate)


Concentration total focus on the task at hand
Distractions- internal and external stimuli effect people differently
Create as few distractions as possible . . . set routines . . . set consistent emotions
Concentrate on the process, not on the goal
Feedback for improvement from self and/or others. Can be for affirmation and/or
criticism

SYMPTOMS OF FLOW outcomes of Being in the Zone


Loss of self-consciousness low concern for surroundings
Disruption of time time stands still
Exhaustion physical, emotional, mental
Personal satisfaction sense of accomplishment; knowing person was pushed to the
limit

Recall and analyze your own optimal experiences
Demonstrate the relationship of flow to other life events
Analyze the potential to enhance your quality of life in various settings
Create a classroom environment for your students that enhances flow experiences
