    Newcastle researchers have shown that type 2 diabetes is caused by excess fat accumulating in the pancreas, and that losing a small amount of that fat through weight loss can reverse the disease. In a study, people with type 2 diabetes who had bariatric surgery lost 13% of their body weight on average, reducing pancreatic fat levels by 1.2% - equivalent to 0.6 grams. This removed excess fat from the pancreas and allowed normal insulin production and blood sugar control to return, demonstrating that type 2 diabetes is reversible through weight loss targeting pancreatic fat.

    AffectingtwoandahalfmillionpeopleintheUKandontheincreaseType2diabetesisalongtermconditioncausedbytoomuchglucose,atypeofsugar,intheblood.
    TheresearchledbyProfessorRoyTaylor,aConsultantPhysicianspecialisinginDiabetesattheNewcastleHospitalsandProfessorofMedicineandMetabolismatNewcastle
    UniversityaspartoftheNewcastleAcademicHealthPartners ,isbeingpublishedonlinetodayinDiabetesCare.HeissimultaneouslypresentingthefindingsattheWorld
    DiabetesConferenceinVancouver.

    Bariatricsurgery
    Inatrial,18peoplewithType2diabetesand9peoplewhodidnothavediabetesweremeasuredforweight,fatlevelsinthepancreasandinsulinresponsebeforeandafter
    bariatricsurgery.ThepatientswithType2diabeteshadbeendiagnosedforanaverageof6.9years,andallforlessthan15years.
    ThepeoplewithType2diabeteswerefoundtohaveincreasedlevelsoffatinthepancreas.
    Theparticipantsinthestudyhadallbeenselectedtohavegastricbypasssurgeryforobesityandweremeasuredbeforetheoperationthenagaineightweekslater.Afterthe
    operation,thosewithType2diabeteswereimmediatelytakenofftheirmedication.
    Bothgroupslostthesameamountofweight,around13%oftheirinitialbodyweight.Critically,thepooloffatinthepancreasdidnotchangeinthenondiabeticsbutdecreased
    toanormallevelinthosewithType2diabetes.

    ThisshowsthattheexcessfatinthediabeticpancreasisspecifictoType2diabetesandimportantinpreventinginsulinbeingmadeasnormal.Whenthatexcessfatis
    removed,insulinsecretionincreasestonormallevels.Inotherwords,theywerediabetesfree.
    Drainexcessfatoutofthepancreas
    ProfessorTaylorsaid:ForpeoplewithType2diabetes,losingweightallowsthemtodrainexcessfatoutofthepancreasandallowsfunctiontoreturntonormal.
    Soifyouaskhowmuchweightyouneedtolosetomakeyourdiabetesgoaway,theanswerisonegram!Butthatgramneedstobefatfromthepancreas.Atpresenttheonly
    waywehavetoachievethisisbycalorierestrictionbyanymeanswhetherbydietoranoperation.
    InpatientswhohadstartedwithType2diabetes,fatlevelsinthepancreas(pancreatictriglyceride)decreasedby1.2%overthe8weeks.Veryexactmethodswereneededto
    beabletomeasurethisandanewmethodusingaspecialMRIscanwasdeveloped.WithanaveragepancreasforapersonwithType2diabeteshavingavolumeof50ml,
    thisistheequivalentofaround0.6gramsoffat.
    However,thepatientswhohadneverhaddiabetessawnochangeintheleveloffatintheirpancreasdemonstratingthattheincreaseinfatinthepancreasisspecificto
    peoplewhodevelopType2diabetes.Importantly,individualsvaryinhowmuchfattheycantolerateinthepancreasbeforeType2diabetesoccurs.
    TransformingthethinkingonType2diabetes
    Traditionally,Type2diabeteshasbeenthoughtofasaprogressivecondition,controlledbydietinitiallythentablets,butwhichmayeventuallyrequireinsulininjections.
    Itaffects9%oftheglobalpopulationandwasonceknownasadultonsetdiabetesbutisnowfoundinyoungadultsandchildren.Itcausestoomuchglucoseintheblooddue
    tothepancreasnotproducingenoughinsulinahormonewhichbreaksdownglucoseintoenergyinthecellstogetherwithinsulinresistance,aconditioninwhichthebody
    respondspoorlytoinsulin.
