Unit 301 Develop and promote positive relationships

K3D179 Why it is important for children to be able to deal with conflict themsel
ves and what support they may need from you, according to their age, needs and a
bilities
Why it is important for children to be able to deal with conflict themselves?
If children deal with conflict themselves it helps their negotiation skills, the
ir communication skills, their social skills, their problem solving skills, prom
otes greater independence, boosts their self esteem and confidence because they
were able to sort things out themselves, gives children a greater understanding
of looking at things from another person's point of view (empathy), makes them t
ake more responsibilty for their actions, gives them a chance of self reflection
, promotes greater resillience.
What support might they need from you depending on their age?
Younger children may need more support in resolving their conflicts because they
might not have the language required to sort it out themselves. Also they might
not have the same self control as an older child and the argument may just escu
late instead of being resolved.
Older children should need less help because they are more experienced with prob
lem solving and negotiation. They should be more mature and should have the capa
bility of sorting out conflicts through negotiation and finding a suitable resol
ution with the minimum amount of intervention from an adult.
