K3D179 Why it is important for children to be able to deal with conflict themsel ves and what support they may need from you, according to their age, needs and a bilities Why it is important for children to be able to deal with conflict themselves? If children deal with conflict themselves it helps their negotiation skills, the ir communication skills, their social skills, their problem solving skills, prom otes greater independence, boosts their self esteem and confidence because they were able to sort things out themselves, gives children a greater understanding of looking at things from another person's point of view (empathy), makes them t ake more responsibilty for their actions, gives them a chance of self reflection , promotes greater resillience. What support might they need from you depending on their age? Younger children may need more support in resolving their conflicts because they might not have the language required to sort it out themselves. Also they might not have the same self control as an older child and the argument may just escu late instead of being resolved. Older children should need less help because they are more experienced with prob lem solving and negotiation. They should be more mature and should have the capa bility of sorting out conflicts through negotiation and finding a suitable resol ution with the minimum amount of intervention from an adult.
