RESIDENT PROFILE

Patrick and Venise Shanley

Originally from Rochester, New York, we have lived in
Festival for five years.
Pat is a proud United States Marine Corps Veteran. After
returning home, his work career consisted of 24 years at
Bausch+Lomb, followed by an eleven year career at The
University of Rochesters Laboratory for Laser Energetics
doing research for the Department of Energy.
Venise spent a total of 27 years as an Administrative
Assistant in Middle Market Banking, beginning with a
local bank, which eventually was acquired by mergers to
become JPMorgan Chase. In between, she took a nine
year break from the work world for a more challenging,
but more fun experience, being a full-time Mom.
Our daughter, her husband and two grandsons live in
Henderson, Nevada, and we have two sons who live in
Chicago.
We had been coming to the Phoenix area for many years
to visit Pats sister, and we knew this is where we wanted
to be once we retired. We love it here in Festival.
We casually scoped out different areas for a long time,
then seriously started looking around 2009, after the
real estate market returned to some sense of normalcy.
Our realtor brought Pat out to Festival for a look, and he
knew this was what we were looking for. So, Pat emailed
pictures to me at my office back in Rochester, and
we agreed to take the step and buy our home here in
Festival in 2010, and moved here full-time in 2011. Yes
thats trust but we never regretted our decision. Sure,
its hot in the summer, but have you ever been to

Western New York in January? The heat sure beats

white-knuckle driving in a snow storm any day.
Pat is an avid golfer and a member of the Mens Golf
Club. He has played softball, but quickly discovered that
playing college baseball, and playing ball in your 60s
are two completely different things. You will see both of
us in the gym, trying to keep one step ahead of age. We
are also members of the Hiking Club and the Canadian/
American Friendship Club, and we enjoy the ASU Lifelong
Learning opportunities. We consider the Bookmobile a
huge asset to the community and we use it on a regular
basis.
Our chocolate lab, Coco, made the relocation trip with us
too. She loves to take walks in our neighborhood. She
will be twelve in August, so the walks are a little shorter
now.
The Community keeps us enjoying life. Laughter and
friendships keep us feeling young. After all, thats what
its all about.

Festival Swimmers Club

Festival Swimmers Make a Big Splash at Senior Olympics
Sun City Festival residents
who have visited the pool
on Tuesday or Thursday
morning the past two years
have probably noticed a
group of men and women
swimming lap after lap,
seemingly without end. For
a number of those swimmers the hours of stroke
work and endurance-building paid big dividends at
the recently completed 35th Annual Arizona Senior Olympic Games.
On Sunday, February 28, seven Sun City Festival Swim Club members traveled
to the Mesquite Grove Aquatic Center in Chandler, Arizona and combined to
win a total of 17 Senior Olympic Medals. Competing on behalf of SCFSC were
Sue Akenhead, Chris Cottam, Gail Esler, Tom Jacob, Keith Nelson, Cris Rowse
and Rick Torres.
While all athletes put forth memorable efforts, performances of note were
turned in by Tom Jacob who won 5 Medals and Sue Akenhead who won 4
Medals. But brightest SCFSC Star of the day was 80 years-young Cris Rowse
who garnered 4 Medals in her first competition ever and posted a highly
coveted National United States Masters Qualifying Time in the 50 Freestyle.
Based on their performances, all seven SCFSC competitors are now eligible
to compete in the 2017 National Senior Olympics to be held in Birmingham,
Alabama.
On Saturday, March 12, SCFSC Members Donna Hays, Dave Luna, Marla Lucas and Jim Scapellato joined their teammates listed above at the Relay Meet
version of the Senior Olympics held at the Bell Recreation Center in Sun City.
The results from the Relay Meet were spectacular. SCFSC athletes dominated
the competition, combining to win a staggering 47 Medals, among them 29
Gold, 13 Silver and 5 Bronze.
The Sun City Festival Swimmers Club is open to all SCF residents whether they
are interested in competing, increasing their endurance in the pool, improving
their stroke or just becoming a better overall swimmer. Interested individuals
can contact SCFSC President Keith Nelson at 612-805-3831.

Break The Old Habits

by Chuck Eier, M.S. C.S.C.S.,

Fitness/Wellness Director

We all know exercise is good for us. It helps control blood pressure,
cholesterol, and blood sugar. Exercise makes our heart stronger and more
efficient. Exercise helps maintain, or improve, muscle strength and bone
density. And, exercise helps to control body weight.
Its a great tool for preventing disease and maintaining good health along with helping maintain
independence with age. As a result, we faithfully
and habitually take our daily walk, spend time on
the treadmill, and/or lift weights. However, we
may not be providing ourselves with the MAXIMAL
benefits for all our efforts.
Our bodies are stimulus-response mechanisms. Whats more, the body
is basically lazy. The heart, the muscles and all the other body parts will
respond (get stronger and more fit) to the stimulus of exercise. And, the
response (fitness) is exactly the amount needed-no more, no less.
The results of our consistent, daily exercise go only so far when we do the
same exercise, for the same amount of time, at the same effort level
without any variation. The body will get only so much benefit from, and
respond only so much to, the same stimulus. By providing new and different stimulus, changing exercise habits can lead to additional fitness gains
and benefits.
The same exercise over and over can also lead to boredom
and/or repetitive stress injuries. Boredom is one of the
most-reported barriers to exercise. It only makes sense for
us to get bored when we do the same exercise day after
day. Doing different exercise, or periodically changing the
routine, substantially increases the likelihood of sticking with
a consistent exercise program. Also, repetitive movements
done frequently and without adequate recovery can lead
to overuse injuries such as tendonitis, pulled muscles, and
bursitis. These types of problems can substantially limit, or totally prevent,
exercise performance. Exercise variety prevents one particular part of the
body from repeatedly undergoing the same movement or experiencing the
same stress.
So, instead of that five days per week on the treadmill at the same speed
for the same amount, try ten or fifteen minutes on the stationary bike or
the elliptical trainer. Instead of the same weight machine exercises for the
shoulder or back muscles, try using some of the free weight equipment or
challenge yourself with body weight exercises. Consistently changing the
exercise routine keeps the body continually challenged, minimizes risk of
repetitive stress injuries, and prevents boredom.
