Europes Warm Winter

Winter in Northern Europe is usually quite cold. Temperatures are usually

around freezing or below. When the weather is this cold, the trees are
bare, rivers like the Danube freeze, and birds fly south for the winter.
This winter, however, has been very different. Temperatures in some
cities in Northern Europe are between 55 and 60 degrees. In contrast
with a more normal winter, trees are flowering, rivers are still flowing,
and birds are staying put. Although the warm weather limits some
activities like ice skating, many Europeans are still able to enjoy some
traditional winter activities like feasting, visiting family and friends, and
enjoying the outdoors.

What you need to know

Emancipation Proclamation and the Unions Civil War victory brought

freedom of slaves.

Lawmakers in the North pushed to grant African Americans equal rights

as part of a postwar program. These civil rights laws and amendments
to the Constitution, passed in the 1860s and 70s, gave African
Americans the right to vote and hold office.

But many people did not agree with these laws, and African Americans
were treated unfairly. Racial inequality plagued America for decades.

As a result, many Americanslike W.E.B. Du Bois and Booker T.

Washingtonbecame active in promoting equal rights for all African
Americans.

Key Concepts

In the early 1900s, African Americans did not have the same rights as
other Americans. In 1905, a group of prominent African-American
activists led by W.E.B. Du Bois formed the Niagara Movement. The group
first met near Niagara Falls in Canada.

The Niagara Movement fought for civil rights in the U.S., worked to end
segregation, and protested unfair laws against African Americans.

The Niagara Movement lasted until 1910. By that time, Niagara

members joined with others to form a new civil rights organization--the
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
W.E.B. Du Bois helped start the NAACP in 1909.

Today, the NAACP continues working to end racial injustice in America.

battle we wage is not for ourselves alone but for all true Americans.
