Subject: Literacy, 45 minutes

Topic: Visualization and After Reading Activities
Title of Lesson: If Can See It... You Can Understand It
Objectives:
The student will analyze a specific passage for contextual meaning and draw inferences from
what s/he has read. (RL-5.1)
The student will draw in order to respond to the grade level text to make sense of it in order to
become a more self-directed, critical reader and thinker. (RL 13.3)
The student will engage in dialogue with the teachers in order to explore the meaning of and
interactions with the text in order to construct new understandings. (W-1.4)
Purpose:
The purpose of this lesson is to assist the student in making visualizations while reading
text. When a student can make visualizations his or her comprehension instantly becomes better.
This is useful in life because it can help the student to further their skills in the workplace. If the
student can visualize what s/he is instructed to do, whether through verbal or through written
instructions, then s/he will be able to better complete the task s/he is assigned.
Materials:
1.1: It Says, I Say And So chart
1.2: Blank paper for visualization drawings.
1.3: Colored pens
Procedure:
For introducing the lesson
The teachers will enter the room and greet student. The teachers will ask him about his reading
and his weekend.
The teachers will introduce the lessons. We will complete the It Says, I Say...And So method
and the Double Entry Journal.. We will give the student explicit instructions about how to
complete each activity.
For continuing the lesson
For the lesson, the teachers will hand out the It Says, I Say...And So chart to the student
During the lesson, we will let the student choose several passages from the novel Forever and
write them down in the It Says section of the It Says, I Say...And So chart.
From that passage we will ask the student to paraphrase it and tell us what it means. Those will
be placed in the I Say column of the chart.
If the student has not finished the book, in the last column we will ask him to predict what he
thinks will happen next. The student will place his prediction in the And So column of the
chart.
If the student has finished the novel instead of asking him to visualize and make predictions, we
will ask him if any of his predictions came true. We will ask him to list those predictions and
outcomes in the last column of the chart.
The student will divide a piece of notebook paper in half lengthwise (hotdog bun)

9. In the left-hand column the student will copy sentences directly from the text, the student will
include the page number(s).
10. In the right-hand column, students will write down their visualizations, inferential and critical
thinking about the work, sentence, and/or phrase.
For concluding the lesson
11. To conclude the lesson will be summarizing main points from the after reading strategy.
12. We will also ask the student to summarize or retell what happened in the Forever novel.
Evaluation:
During:
The Student will complete the It Says, I Say...And so method, while completing the
activity, student will respond and discuss answers aloud with teachers.
After:
The teachers will write a reflection on what we have learned and observed from Bradleys
interaction with the activity. We also reflect upon our entire experience with Bradley from
beginning to end.
