Practice Microscope Test:

1. How many times bigger is an object when viewed on high power with
a microscope?
400x on high power
2. What parts of the microscope actually magnify an image?
The Objectives, The ocular lens, and the body tube
3. Define the following terms:
Parfocal Lens that stays in focus when the focal length is
changed
Contrast How things look significantly different from
something slse (colors)
Magnification The ability to zoom or see something that is
very smaller in a larger image
Resolving power The ability for something to distinguish
adjacency or similarities to another image
4. Why must you start your observations on scanning power? So you
are able to find the specimen because the magnification is a lot more
sensitive on high power
5. Why can you use coarse focus on scanning power only? If you use
coarse focus on another objective, it is very likely for the lens and slide to
break and get scratched
6. If the letter E is placed right side up on the slide it draw how it will
look under scanning power It looks like an e however it is seen much larger
and the pixels of the image can be seen
7. If you move the slide to the left, which way will the letter E appear
to move? It will move to the right because the mirrors create a reverse
image
8. Why do you need to use water when making a temporary slide? The
water improves the image quality
9. What is the purpose of using a stain like methylene blue on a
specimen? The purpose is for the specimen (usually clear) to be
contrasted against the clear slide
10.
Label the parts of a microscope on the back.
11.
You have been give the task to calculate the diameter of the
field of view on low power (100x) and high power (400x) on a microscope
that has the following data on scanning power (40x). Use the formula on
the board to help you
Scanning power diameter = 5.3 mm
Scanning power diameter = ___4200___m
Low power diameter = ___1500_____m
High power diameter = ___420____m
