However,asyoucollectdata,yourquestionislikelytochangeandgrow.Definingquestionswithinyourprojectisnotalinear
process.Rather,questionswilldefineyourdirectionsofinquiryand,inturn,theresultsofyourinquirieswillrefineyour
question.Developingresearchquestionsisaniterativeprocessevolvingwithyourproject.Wehavemadeafigurebelowto
illustratetheprocess.Youwillstartwithsomethingyouareinterestedin.Youwillthencreatequestionsaboutthisthing,and
figureoutwhatyournextstepswillbetoinvestigatethosequestionsfurther.Asaresult,youwill(hopefully)learnsomething
new,whichwillleadtoawholenewitemofinterest.

Considerresearchyouvealreadydone.Pickingatopicfromprojectsyouhavedonebeforecouldhelpyoufindideasthat
youarealreadyinterestedin.Collectyourprevioustermpapersorreportsandlistthetopicsyouhaveresearchedforthose
projects.Chooseoneortwothatseempromisingandrelevanttoenvironmentalhistory.However,youshouldntjustrecycle
topicsfrompreviouslywrittenpapers.Instead,youshoulddevelopanewtopicfromtheoldresearch.
Yourowninterestsareagreatsourcetofindatopic.Listyourinterests(asmanyasyoucan!),andthenrankthemtocome
upwithoneortwowhicharethemostcompellingtoyou.Oneofthebestwaystogenerateatopicfromageneralinterestisto
