Recognise rhymes, syllables and sounds (phonemes) in spoken words

Standards: They listen for rhyme, letter patterns and sounds in words
Learning outcomes:
- demonstrate the ability to identify rhyme within the nursery rhyme.
- demonstrate the ability to identify HFW words within the rhyme.

Indicators:
- students are accurately identifying rhyming words in the nursery rhyme.
- students are correctly identifying HFW in the nursery rhyme.

Assessment:
Success Criteria (2 or 3 to match indicators):
- students can correctly identify the words which rhyme within the nursery
rhyme.
-students can effectively identify HFW within the nursery rhyme.

Assessment strategies and feedback:
Assessment of the students will occur during the introduction of the lesson

when the teacher discusses with the students an example of rhyme in the text.
Feedback will be provided to the students throughout the lesson, whilst
checking the students work.

From previous exercises I have developed the knowledge that most of the
students are able to identify rhyme, and I have developed the knowledge of
which students require extra assistance.

Content of Lesson:
A.
Introduction
__10__ mins
Teacher to gain students attention by ringing the bell, or echo clapping, or echo
performing (hands on heads, hands on shoulders, hands in laps).
Teacher will inform students that the topic of the lesson is identifying which
words rhyme.

Teacher will present the nursery rhyme on the interactive whiteboard and go
through it with the class 3 times.
Teacher will go through the first sentence with the class, to provide an
example. Teacher will also accept questions from students.
B.

Development

When should there be a capital letter?


Discuss with the students that a capital letter will be used to begin a new
sentence but to also represent a name.
Ask a student to show the class an example of a capital letter.

C.
Consolidation and Practice
__30__ mins
Teacher will go through the first sentence with the students to provide them
with a model.
The students will then be asked to identify the rhyming words, and colour each
set of rhyming words in different colours, as well as the capital letters.

Early Finishers Extension Activities


Students who finish the activity early will be asked to read quietly to
themselves, to prepare to move onto the next nursery rhyme.

Closure

The students will be instructed to show the teacher their work once they have
finished, and the teacher will perform corrections if needed.
The teacher will then gain all students attention and as a class go through the
rhyming words and capital letters with the students.
