STROOP TEST: Quick!!

Say aloud what color you see in

every word NOT the color you read.

Not easy, right? This actual task is

called the Stroop test and is used in
neuropsychological evaluations to
measure mental vitality and
flexibility, since performing well
requires strong attention and self
regulation capability.

THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

Objective: Understand the
importance of the Nervous System in
living things to take care of our body.
Learning objective: Recognizes
the vocabulary related to the
Nervous System to describe its
function and possible alterations in
our body.

BIBLICAL PRINCIPLE
All of us are an important
member of the body of Christ
1 Corinthians 12:26-27
26If one part suffers, every part suffers
with it; if one part is honored, every
part rejoices with it.
27Now you are the body of Christ, and
each one of you is a part of it.

After doing the brain teaser, think

and answer:
What parts of your body did you use
to do the exercise?
What systems of your body do you
know?
What is the function of that system?
Do you think those systems work
individually?

Functions of the Nervous

System
1. Control center for all body activities
2. Responds and adapts to changes
that occur both inside and outside
the body
(Ex: pain, temperature,
pregnancy)
* Stimuli: things in our environment
that cause us to act.

Two Major Divisions of the Nervous

System
CENTRAL NERVOUS
SYSTEM:
Its made up of the
brain and spinal cord.
Its controls all the
actions in the body.
PERIPHERAL NERVOUS
SYSTEM
It delivers messages
from the Centrla
nervous system to the
rest of the body.
Its made up of the
nerves.

Central Nervous System

Brain: a mass of 100
billion neurons located
inside the skull.
It is the most
complicated organ we
have. It has 3 parts:
Cerebrum : largest part
of human brain
- Responsible for:
- Thought
- Language
- Senses
- Memory
- Voluntary movement
-imagination

Cerebellum : at
base of brain. It`s
called a little brain.
-Responsible for:
- Muscle
coordination
- Balance
- Posture
Brain Stem and
Medulla : They work
as a team. They
connect brain to
spinal cord
-Responsible for:
- Breathing
- Swallowing
- Heartbeat
- Blood pressure

Spinal Cord:
Column of nerves from
brain to tailbone
protected by vertebrae of
spine
-Responsible for:
- Conducting impulses
between the brain and the
rest of the body

Brain Teaser
If you were running a race, and you
passed the person in 2nd place, what
place would you be in now?
Second!!

PERIPHERAL NERVOUS
SYSTEM
Nerves : visible bundles of axons and
dendrites that extend from the brain and
spinal cord to all other parts of the body.
Responsibilities:
- Sensory nerves - carry messages from
body to brain (pain, pressure, temperature)
- Motor nerves carry messages from brain
to body to respond

Neurons : microscopic nerve cells

that make up the brain, spinal cord,
and nerves.
Each neuron contains:
- Cell body with nucleus
- Dendrites : fibers that receive
messages from other neurons
- Axons : fibers that send messages
to other neurons

ANATOMY OF A NEURON

Neurons do NOT
touch; there is a gap
between them
called a synapse
Messages are sent
across the synapses
by special chemicals
called
neurotransmitters
The use of
neurotransmitters
causes an electrical
current.
