This lesson aims to introduce the concept of five senses, help students to relate each sense with its
corresponding organ. Then students are going to make a five sense chart.
A new concept/activity
We use our five senses to explore and learn the world around us, so it is important for students to
understand what the five senses are and how they related to our body.
The length of this activity is 30 minutes, 15 minutes for read aloud and the rest for the chart creating.
Given instructions on read aloud, students can identify and relate each sense with its corresponding
organ.
This activity will enable the child to increase competences in various areas aligning with the
following standards:
New York State Common Core Standards
CCSS.PRE-K.DOMAIN 4.Part A.1. Demonstrate that they are motivated to communicate.

CCSS.PRE-K.DOMAIN 4. Part A.3. Demonstrates that he/she understand what they observe.
CCSS.PRE-K.DOMAIN 4. Part A.5b. Identifies pictures related to words (show me the white
dog).
CCSS.PRE-K.DOMAIN 4. Part B.1. With prompting and support, ask and answer about

detail(s) in a text.
CCSS.PRE-K.DOMAIN 4. Part B.7.With prompting and support, students will engage in a
picture walk to make connections between self, illustrations, and the story.

Anticipatory Set (Connection/Motivation):
Begin by reviewing the theme, asking students about their understanding of five senses. They can
have opportunity to express their thoughts about our theme. Then I will introduce our lesson for today
is learning about five sense and the corresponding organ with each sense.
Instruction/Mini Lesson:
I going to start a read aloud of the book, My Five Senses by Aliki. It illustrates a brief description of
five senses and how they relate to the organism of our body. While reading the book, I will ask
students questions to identify the concept and encourage them to look for answers of the shown pages
and talk about their thoughts and ideas. The questions include:
What do you see on this page?
Which part of our body is related to the sense of seeing?
Which part of our body is related to the sense of taste?
Should we use our hands to see?
Which sense do you use to know about the color of the flower?
Do you use the sense of touch to know about colors?

Do you use the sense of smell to know how tall a building is?
Each student are encourage to use their own words to express their opinions and ideas for their
answers.
Independent Practice:
After the read aloud, students are going to make a chart of five senses. They will be given a paper
listing of five senses and pictures of the corresponding organs, such as eye, ear, tongue, hand, and
nose. Each student is going to glue the pictures on the paper with the correct name of sense.
Closure (sharing/reflection, next steps):
Once all students finished their charts, they are going to reunion on the carpet and talk about their
work.

Pre-assessment

Assessment of Student Learning

Before this lesson, I would

ensure every student identify
and understand how to pronoun
the following vocabulary words:
eyes, ears, mouth, hands, nose,
see, hear, smell, touch, and
taste.

When students presented

their charts on the carpet, I
will ask them what they
learned from the book, as
well as which parts of our
body are corresponding to
our senses of see, hearing,
touch, taste, and smell.

I am going to review the

with students. Make sure
every student has a chance to
answer my questions about
five senses and their relevant
organs in the following
lessons and observe their
understanding of the concept.

Read the book twice to English Language Learners with more

realistic pictures and ensure they are comfortable with the
vocabulary before chart creating. They can use their native
language to present their work during the regrouping time.

Follow up/Extension activities

teacher is using positive

reinforcement throughout the
activity.
Find more relevant books and present to the students in the following lessons. Allow students to have
more class discussions after book reading.
