***Because of the disturbing nature of these events, students are


reminded that these assignments should maintain a thoughtful and
sensitive approach to presenting and discussing the nature of the events.

Task Description:
This is a three-part research based project that focuses primarily on finding
answers to the overarching question printed above. For this we will be
convening an in-class United Nations style round table discussion on the
link(s) between nationalist and ultranationalist policies/actions and genocide.
The project involves the following steps:
1. Creation of Visual Representation
You will create some sort of visual representation, which explains the link
between nationalist and ultranationalist policies and actions as a possible
root cause of genocide through the telling of your groups genocide story.
The format is up to you, but the more creative, the better. Because Genocide
is a very emotional subject, this may be a good project for exploring your
creative/sensitive side. Some ideas you might consider are a poem, a
drawing, a video, artwork, a sculpture, a monument, advertisement,
biography, blog, collage, mind map, diary entries, broadcast, scrapbook etc.

Through your research you will answer the following questions:
Who was involved (what groups/parties etc.)?
What led to the abuses?
What types of policies were put in place (official or unofficial)?
What were the primary interests of the group that committed
genocide?
Where did the event(s) occur?
When did the event(s) occur?
Why did one group resort to policies of genocide?
How might these abuses have been prevented?
Use the answers to these questions to create a list of factors which resulted
in genocide - remember to consider immediate factors, indirect factors and
historical factors. Your visual representation will then link these factors to
nationalism and Ultranationalism (if such a link exists if not represent that)
2. Creation of 8 Stages of Genocide Handout:
You will create a handout about your topic that will be distributed to your
fellow round table participants (Ms. Stiff will make copies for you). This
handout will be formatted to demonstrate how your particular topic
progressed along the 8 Stages of Genocide. This handout should be a brief

summary that contains a clearly identifiable heading (e.g. Classification) and


then notes that detail that stage in relation to your topic. The creation of this
document will also help you to complete step 1 and gain a deeper level of
understanding regarding your topic.
3. UN Style Round Table Presentation:
We will get together and have a round table discussion where each group will
present their findings. Each group will share their visual representation and
distribute a handout to fellow participants
Your presentation should answer the overarching question: To what extent
are nationalist and ultranationalist policies and actions root causes of
genocide?
We will then discuss as group and attempt to come to a consensus answer as
a class

your textbook or any other relevant material you may need to
complete your project.

visual/creative representation and begin building/making/writing it.
