7. What did the Emancipation Proclamation do? Why is it so important?

The proclamation is justifiably celebrated as a significant step toward the goal
of ending slavery and making African Americans equal citizens of the United
States. Coming as it did in the midst of the Civil War (186165), the
proclamation announced to the Confederacy and the world that the abolition
of slavery had become an important goal of the North in its fight against the
rebellious states of the South.
8. Why do you think Abraham Lincoln is called one of our greatest
presidents?
Abraham Lincoln is considered by many scholars to have been the best
President. He is credited with holding the Union together and leading the
North to victory in the Civil War. Further, his actions and beliefs led to the
emancipation of African-Americans from the bonds of slavery.
Events and Accomplishments of Abraham Lincoln's Presidency:

The main event of Lincoln's presidency was the Civil War that lasted from
1861-65. Eleven states seceded from the Union, and Lincoln firmly believed
in the importance of not only defeating the Confederation but eventually
reuniting North and South.
In September 1862, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. This
freed the slaves in all Southern states. In 1864, Lincoln promoted Ulysses
S. Grant to be Commander of all Union forces. Sherman's raid on Atlanta
helped clench Lincoln's reelection in 1864.
That is why he was called a great or the best president because he was so
good with people and make the contrie United State of America.

9-How did Abraham Lincoln die?

John Wilkes Booth fired into Abraham Lincolns brain inflicted a terrible,
mortal wound. But when a prominent neurosurgeon began to investigate
the assassination, he discovered persuasive evidence that Lincolns
doctors must share the blame with Booths derringer. Without their
treatment the President might very well have lived.
Threat of assassination may seem the greatest risk a President of the
United States must take upon entering office, but history suggests that
until recently a Chief Executives life was threatened more by his postassault medical treatment than by his assassins bullet. There have been at
least eleven attempts on the lives of American Presidents, four of them
successful
10-What is the Lincoln Memorial? Why was it made?
- The Lincoln Memorial was designed by Henry Bacon; the style is that of a
Greek Doric temple with 36 enormous columns. Inside the building is a
huge statue of a sitting Lincoln. Over Lincoln's head is the inscription:
"IN THIS TEMPLE
AS IN THE HEARTS OF THE PEOPLE
FOR WHOM HE SAVED THE UNION
THE MEMORY OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN
IS ENSHRINED FOREVER."
- Lincoln's statue was sculpted by Daniel Chester French (1850-1931)
11-What is Lincoln's Gettysburg address? What was the Battle of
Gettysburg about?
On June 1, 1865, Senator Charles Sumner referred to the most famous speech
ever given by President Abraham Lincoln. In his eulogy on the slain president, he
called the Gettysburg Address a "monumental act." He said Lincoln was mistaken
that "the world will little note, nor long remember what we say here." Rather, the
Bostonian remarked, "The world noted at once what he said, and will never cease
to remember it. The battle itself was less important than the speech."
There are five known copies of the speech in Lincoln's handwriting, each with a
slightly different text, and named for the people who first received them: Nicolay,
Hay, Everett, Bancroft and Bliss. Two copies apparently were written before
delivering the speech, one of which probably was the reading copy. The
remaining ones were produced months later for soldier benefit events. Despite
widely-circulated stories to the contrary, the president did not dash off a copy
aboard a train to Gettysburg. Lincoln carefully prepared his major speeches in
advance; his steady, even script in every manuscript is consistent with a firm
writing surface, not the notoriously bumpy Civil War-era trains. Additional

versions of the speech appeared in newspapers of the era, feeding modern-day

confusion about the authoritative text.
12-Make a brief summary about his life and achievements.
Abraham Lincoln was born in rural Kentucky in 1809, to parents of low social
standing and little education. During his childhood and early youth, the family
would move several times, first to Indiana and later to Illinois. Lincoln's
mother, Nancy Hanks, died when Lincoln was still a boy, and the next year his
father, Thomas remarried to Sarah Bush Johnston, who helped raise the
young Lincoln.
Lincoln got his start in life after a pair of flatboat journeys to New Orleans.
Soon afterward, he moved to New Salem, Illinois and set up as a store clerk
there. When the Black Hawk War broke out in 1832, he became the captain of
his volunteer company, serving for three months but seeing no active duty.
13-Name some interesting curious facts about Lincoln.
1. He was the only president to have a patent: Lincoln invented a device to
free steamboats that ran aground.
2. He practiced law without a degree. Lincoln had about 18 months of
formal schooling.
3. He wanted women to have the vote in 1836. The future president was a
suffragette before it became fashionable.
4. Lincoln kept his important documents inside his hat.
14- Reflection: What are your expectations about this new book that we are going
to read? What are you expecting to learn?
We are going to see what people like Abraham Lincoln had to pass to got in
the top of the world and be so famous and recognized working hard and
being responsible. This will teach us how to be a good person, also to work
hard and be nicely with others. This book will be awsome.
