Abstract:

Environmentalscanningisakeyfactortosustainedcompetitiveadvantageofthefirmanditisbecoming
increasinglyimportantinsmallandmediumenterprises(SMEs)theoryandpractice.Notsurprisingly,itis
widelyviewedasthefirststepintheprocessofstrategicmanagement.Themaindebateinstrategyand
environmentmanagementisnowadaysconcernedwiththeprimaryimportanceofenvironmentalscanningto
strategyformulationandimplementation.Moreover,effectivescanningoftheenvironmentisseenas
necessarytothesuccessfulalignmentofcompetitivestrategieswithenvironmentalrequirementsandthe
achievementofoutstandingperformanceinSMEs.Thispaperexplorestheaboverelationshipinthecontext
oftheBritishelectricalandelectronicindustry.Itisbasedontheempiricalevidenceandthefindingsofa
surveyof132chiefexecutiveofficers(CEO)andtheirperceptionofenvironmentalscanningandstrategyin
SMEs.Itisconcludedthatthereisasignificantrelationshipbetweenincreasingtheenvironmentalscanning
ofthefirm,andthesuccessofthefirmsperformanceinsmallandmediumsizedenterprises.
