Loyalty in Collectivism
In the book Animal Farm by George Orwell, we see a big problem in the society that is
created. When the two pigs Napoleon and Snowball are in charge we tend to see lots of problems
arise, The reason for these problems is the lack of collectivism techniques in leadership.
Collectivism is when a group has more say in what's happening, rather than individualism, which
is the focus on each individual. We need collectivism in a society for it to flourish. We need a
group vote to show what most people need so that the majority will be satisfied. Loyalty is an
important thing to consider in society. There is loyalty in collectivism; like when a group of
people stick together for what they believe in. The unity of people in a society is more important
than the individual dreams.
First, we can see the lack of loyalty and unity of people in our literature. For example, in
Animal Farm when Napoleon chases Snowball off the farm he does it in an act of betrayal
against him. (Orwell, 53) Napoleon is flawed in his leadership because he focuses on his own
individual needs rather than trying to agree with Snowball and work together. His lack of loyalty
creates many problems in this story. A further example of this is when Napoleon decided to start
discussing with the other farmers (Orwell, 66) which was unloyal because throughout the whole
story the animals swore that humans were not to be trusted. Third, its easy to see how Napoleon
is a tyrant when he becomes richer and the other animals grow poorer. His power evolved into

fear and he makes all the animals listen to him because theyre scared. (Orwell, 84) if he used
collectivism and was more loyal to his followers they wouldnt be so scared of him. Overall, this
story shows the need for loyalty. Because of the absence of it, the society that was present in this
story became corrupt. Napoleons lack of loyalty and collectivism caused his followers to not
trust him. Now that weve seen how Napoleon messed up we should understand that if we are
loyal to our friends and family our relationships will be stronger.
For instance, it only really makes sense living in a family with collectivism will help
improve your relationships with others. In the article Associations of Collectivism with
Relationship Commitment, Passion, and Mate Preferences: Opposing Roles of Parental Influence
and Family Allocentrism by Kathrine Bejanyan, it is discussed that if people use collectivism in
their relationships they have a greater chance of having strong family ties. In the same article,
Bejanyan reports that studies show people who used collectivism in their family usually had a
preference for partners who were more trustworthy and kind. This will lead to that person finding
someone who is loyal and that will lead to a healthy and happy relationship. One final example
of why collectivism is important for the growth of relationships is in the article, a study showed
that greater collectivism found in a family can increase the passion that a person has with their
partner. The more compatible people feel with each other the more theyll stick together and that
will cause a healthy relationship. With all of this taken into consideration, its logical to try to
unite your family together in order for your kids to grow up and have good relationships with
people.
In contrast of what weve been discussing, there is another side to this argument. Some
people believe that collectivism is not the way to go and that individualism is more important
than collectivism. One example of why people might think this is from an article called Your

Identity Matters by Stedman Graham, it states that America cannot thrive if its people do not
thrive. And people cannot thrive when they perceive themselves to be stuck in a bubble, when
they have lost confidence in their ability to even get and retain a good job, let alone progress
through a career that will ensure they can provide for themselves and their families securely
throughout their lifetimes. This quote is referring to the fact that a lot of students drop out of
college and have a tough time finding jobs because they feel closed into certain things. This
claim isnt reliable because when people go to college they find out who they are and they are
guided to who theyre going to be and what jobs they can get. Another example of why some
people think that individualism is more important than collectivism is from the same article
stating Never have the people of this country had a greater need for identity: a clearly defined
methodology that has the ability to transform peoples perceptions of themselves, the world
around them and their place in that world. Although what theyre saying is true that an
individual needs to find out who they are, a person wont be able to find themselves without the
help of others. A person needs to be surrounded by people who have the same goals in mind and
are willing to help that person achieve their goals. Lastly, the article states that It took me a long
time to realize that your identity matters. I grew up like most people who were told, go to
school. Finish college, get a job and live happily ever after. Little did I know that there was more
that you could do if you only knew how. It does make sense that finding out who you want to be
takes time. Finding out what you really want to do in life doesnt come easy but you need to be
guided along the way. Going to college and learning about things that youre interested in will
guide you to where you want to go in life. Collectivism will help you find your identity.
Individualism will only leave you confused and alone, if you use collectivism you will grow to

be the best you can be. If you take this into consideration it will help you save time in the future.
Youll never know who you are unless you reach out to others.
In conclusion, collectivism is more important than individualism because loyalty is more
valuable than individual greed. Collectivism is when a group has more say in whats happening
rather than individualism, which focuses on one individual's wants. Collectivism is better for
people than individualism because it supports them and helps guide them easier. He needed the
people and the clamour around him. There was no questions and no doubts when he stood on a
platform over a sea of faces; the air was heavy, compact, saturated with a single solventadmiration; there was no room for anything else. He was great; great as the number of people
who told him so. He was right; right as the number of people who believed it. He looked at the
faces, at the eyes, he saw himself born in them, he saw himself granted the gift of life. That was
Peter Keating, that, the reflection in those staring pupils, and his body was only it's reflection.
Ayn Rand, The Fountainhead. () We can discover that when using collectivism everyday it can
solve our problems and help guide us to achieve our dreams. Now that we understand what
collectivism is and how its important to be a loyal person, we should strive to connect more with
the people around us and give attention to others so we can all live in harmony. If we dont use
collectivism and side with individualism it is clear to see that our relationships will suffer and if
we do use collectivism our relationships will become stronger and we can live happier lives.
