SHADOWING PROGRAM ORLEANS/NIAGARA CENTERS

Description
This program is the placement of a student into a job situation as a non-paid
worker/observer. The student should be able to work, as well as to observe the
personnel he/she is shadowing.
Each shadowing station must meet the following conditions to qualify:
1.

The training, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities of the
employer, is similar to that which would or has been given at the Orleans &
Niagara Educational Centers.

2.

The training is for the express benefit to the student.

3.

The students do not displace regular employee, but work under their close
observation.

4.

The employer that provides the training derives no immediate advantage from the
activities of the student and, on occasion, his/her operation may actually be
impeded.

5.

The student is not entitled to a job at the conclusion of this training period.

6.

The employer and the student understand that the student is not entitled to
wages for the time spent in training.

7.

The student must be under the supervision of a certified work experience

coordinator and/or vocational instructor from the Orleans & Niagara Educational
Centers. Such supervision shall include periodic site visits.

8.

Since the students are not considered employees, they are not covered by
Workers Compensation insurance.

Program Objectives
To assist program participants in further achieving their occupational goals.
To afford program participants an opportunity to practice their occupational field
under controlled conditions.
Rev. 10/13

To assist in the overall placement effort.

To allow students an opportunity to investigate related career fields.

Student Objectives
The students will be able to develop a respect for social values.
The students will be able to see the relevancy of his/her subject or skill training.
The students will be able to gain experience with which to evaluate career choices.
The student will be able to recognize the value and dignity of many occupations and
understand significant occupations of their parents and others.

general education, and the industrial world of work.

Insurance
1.

SHADOWING STUDENTS: This program is the placement of a student into a job

situation as a non-paid worker/observer. An agreement is made with the
employer and BOCES with the understanding that the student is not considered
an employee and is not eligible for benefits under the workmans compensation
law. If injury occurs to the students during shadowing experiences, medical
reimbursement responsibility rests with the students family health insurance
coverage.

2.

An exemption is also given a student learner (cannot be employed) who is

enrolled in a course of study and training in a cooperative career & technical
(vocational) training program under a recognized state or local educational
authority, or in a course of student in a substantially similar program conducted
by a private school. (The on-the-job training, for which there should be a
curriculum/training plan, is considered an extension of the CTE classroom
learning experience, and must be a required component of the total CTE
program.)

A student learner, however, is not an employee of the business, and therefore

cannot be paid. To be classified as a student learner, the purpose of the training
must be for the acquisition of job skills, and all the following criteria points
outlined in the United States Department of Labor (USDOL) Fair Labor Standards
Act must be met:
1) The training, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities of the
business, is
similar to that which would be given in a vocational school.
2) The training is for the benefit of the trainees or students.
3) The trainees or students do not displace regular employees and any work they
may do is
Rev. 10/13

under close supervision.

4) The business that provides the training derives no immediate advantage from
the
activities of the trainees or students and, on occasion, operations may be
impeded.
5) The trainees or students are not necessarily entitled to a job at the conclusion
of the
training period and are free to take employment elsewhere in the same field.
6) The trainees have been notified, preferably in writing, that they will not
receive any wages
for such training and are not considered to be employees for Minimum Wage
purposes.
When all six of the above student learner criteria are met, the student learner
would not be considered an employee of the business.

Student reflection:
What you did this week?
Started with gutting the bathroom. We then scraped the floor to remove any dirt, removed the
toilets and sink. Once cleared, we mixed the mortar and laid tile. We then installed a railing
system along the stairs. The next day we returned to hang dry wall and tied arches into the
kitchen. We were able to paint and finish them because the consumer had a party the next day.
What you improved upon?
I increased my confidence with independent working, problem solving and time management.
What needs improving?
I struggle with getting projects started, but once I get going I am able to follow through.
However, its hard to get that initial comfort level. I want to continue building my confidence to
work independently.

Student reflection:
What you did this week? We started with washing cars then moved to detailing. When
detailing you start on the inside of the car, focusing on vacuuming and cleaning the interior.
Then, we moved to the outside of the car, cleaning the windows, touching up spots missed by
the wash and wiping down the hubcaps and trim. Also I observed mechanics doing work under
the hood and oil changes.
What you improved upon?
I practiced accepting directions from unfamiliar faces. I also focused on helping my peers who
were less comfortable with the duties.
What needs improving?
My level of comfortableness under the hood of a car. With understanding that more, it would be
easier to apply that knowledge to other vehicles/machines.

When we arrived at the fire hall, we were asked to move furniture and prep for painting. I had
to lay painters tape around trim and other areas. Once tapped off, I primed the walls using a
roller and a brush.
What you improved upon?
Others on the site werent as experiences so I practiced my foreman skills which increased my
self confidence with the job.
What needs improving?
I would benefit from improving on my patience with others and not rushing through projects.. I
notice that I can be too critical of my work which can become a distraction.
