WELCOME TO

ADELAIDE

Introduction
Adelaide may be small, but there is
plenty to see and do if you know where
to look. However, many students say that
Adelaide is a little too quiet without
even knowing about or having tried any
of the interesting things there are to do.
The aim of this Webquest is to get
students thinking about what tourist and
recreation activities they can do in
Adelaide and how they can go about it.

Tasks
You are required to investigate tourist sights around
Adelaide and use the Internet to find information such
places.
You will be required to produce some assessment tasks
including:
1)A short written description about how to get to one
tourist destination (40-60 words)
2)A short recorded conversation about what walking
route you are going to take with reference to a
website. (2-3 minutes)
3)A written plan of a day out (150-200 words)
4)A PowerPoint presentation about some tourist sites in
Adelaide, including a brief history, summary of
things to see, personal opinion about the place and
photos

Here is a list of new vocabulary you will need for the first task.

You can also choose

your language to see a
translation of the new
vocabulary word.
This might be easier
than reading the
definition in a
language you do not
fully understand.

might help you remember the
word better.

Process 1
The first thing you need to learn how to do is to
get around Adelaide by public transport

Process 1

If you want to travel from one place to another using public

transport, the easiest way to find your way there is by using the
Adelaide Metro website
https://www.adelaidemetro.com.au/planner/

Here you can write the address

of your starting point.

This is where you type

the place you want to
travel to.
You can choose whether you want to see
the bus schedule for now, the time you
will leave or the time you want to arrive
at your destination

Process 1

Journey results shows multiple ways

to get to your destination.
You can see what time the bus or
train leaves as well as how long (the
duration) it will take to get there.

Process 1
Clicking on the result will allow you
to see more detailed information
about where you need to catch the
bus, where you need to get off and
where you need to transfer (change
to another bus)

Looking at the journey results from last

time we can see how to get from Grote
street in the city to Jetty Road at
Glenelg which is a popular beach with
lots of shops, restaurants and bars.
Example 1:
Firstly, we need to walk from Grote street
to Victoria Square to catch the tram (a
kind of train which travels on the road). It
takes about 2 minutes to walk to Victoria
Square in the centre of the city. The tram
leaves in six minutes so we cant walk too
slowly. The tram leaves the Victoria
Square stop at 1:19 pm and takes 33
minutes to get to Glenelg. It passes 20
stops on the way. We need to get off the
tram at stop 17 Moseley Square. From
there it is only a short walk (4 minutes)
to Jetty Road. We should arrive at 1:55
pm and the journey should take about 39
minutes in total.

Task 1

Now it is time to test your skills.

Hahndorf is a small German themed street which is popular with tourists in the Adelaide Hills.
If you wanted to go there for lunch this weekend, how would you get there?
Write between 60-80 words describing how you would get there by bus, Describe:
Where you would catch the bus from
Which number bus you would take
What time you would leave
How long the journey would take
Where you would transfer (if needed)
When you would arrive in Hahndorf
If you want an example of how to do this see slide 8
Email this to your teacher

For the other tasks try searching online

dictionaries and google images yourself
when you see any new vocabulary you do
not understand

Process 2

You want to go to Mt Lofty Summit this Saturday. You want to

get there before 12:00 PM for some lunch and a nice afternoon
hike.

What bus should you catch from central Adelaide?

What time should you catch it?
Are there any transfers?
What time will you arrive?

Process 2
The walk may be difficult for some members of your
team. Check the information about the walk on the
website and make a plan accordingly
https://www.walkingsa.org.au/walk/find-a-place-to-walk/
waterfall-gully-to-mt-lofty-summit-hike/
Make a plan with your team mates.
What type of walk would be most suitable for the
members of your team?
Do you want to
only hike up OR down the hill?
Hike up and down the hill?
How does this change your transport options? (arriving
time, leaving time, bus stops)

Task 2
Discuss what you have chosen to do and explain your
choice with regards to the information on the website.
Make sure to explain how it effects each member of the
team.
Record this discussion on a smart phone and either upload
it to the teacher in an email OR show it to the teacher in
class.
Your discussion should go for 2-3 minutes and can be
rehearsed
(you do not have to record the first time you have the
conversation but can practice it to make it better first)
Check this link to see how to record conversations on an
iPhone
https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT203038

Process 3
Near the top of the Mt. Lofty Summit is Cleland Wildlife Park

Check out the website:

http://www.environment.sa.gov.au/clelandwildlife/plan-your-visit/discover-clela
nd
Find the following information
How much does it cost for concession card holders? (students)
What animals can you see there?
What time does the park open and close?

Task 3
Make a detailed plan of your day (150-200 words)
Discuss this with the other three members of your group
either face to face or other Skype. Come to an
agreement.
When and where will you catch the buses going there
and returning?
What will you need to bring with you?
Think about the weather, lunch, appropriate clothes,
money
How long will you spend at Cleland National Wildlife
Park and what animals will you see? Make reference to
the map.

Process 4
Now you know how to get around, it is time to find
something to do!
Watch a Youtube video talking about Adelaides tourist
attractions.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kf3_U0MLs9A

Process 4
Now watch it again and try to answer the following questions:
1. Where is Adelaide located?
2. What is described as picturesque in the video?
3. What Adelaide product is described as award winning?
4. What is the name of the square in the centre of the city?
5. What is the name of one of the original mansions built in Adelaide?
6. Where can you learn about pre-European Australian culture? (aboriginal people)
7. What is set on the edge of the central business district? What can you see there?
8. What is the name of an old wine region? How far away is it from Adelaide?
9. Where did the settlers come from? What did they bring?
10. What wine varieties is the area famous for?

Process 4
Here are ten attractions mentioned in the video
1. Victoria Square
2. North Terrace District
3. Ayers House
4. South Australians Museum
5. Art Gallery of South Australia
6. Botanic Gardens
7. Himeji Garden
8. Adelaide Oval
9. Glenelg Beach
10.Barossa and Clare Valleys
In your group decide on two places that you would most like to visit.
You can choose from this list or you can choose any other place as
long as you check with your teacher. You can use Google to find
some information about what you can see and do at each place.

Process 4
Now that you have decided on two places it is time to start
doing some research. Use the Internet to find out some
information about the place you are going to.
When you have done this, you should visit this place on a
suitable day. Make sure you check opening times, entrance
fees, and make a suitable plan to get to the place and
back by public transport.
Take detailed notes on the following questions
What other interesting information did you find out?
Did you enjoy your visit to this place?
What did/ didnt you enjoy about this place.
What type of people would enjoy this place?
If it is allowed try to take some photos of things you found
interesting

Task 4

Make a PowerPoint introducing these places to

other potential tourists to Adelaide
Make at least 5+ slides per place/ per student
Include:
What can you see and do at each place
A short history of each place
Where each place is located and how you would
get there by public transport
Entrance fees, other costs and things to prepare
If you enjoyed it and would you recommend it to
others
Pictures to make your presentation more
attractive, preferably your own

Conclusions
Now that you have a gotten to the end of this
Webquest you should have a good idea about
Adelaides tourist attractions. You should also
be able to do online research about them and
find your way to them using public transport.
Hopefully, you will now have a more enjoyable
stay in Adelaide and will even be able to use
your skills in other Australian cities if you do
any travelling in the holidays.

Teachers Notes
The aim of this Webquest is to stimulate students into becoming independent travellers
within Adelaide and creating some interest in what there is to see and do. Although
many students say they enjoy the lifestyle in the city, many also say that there isnt
anything to do. Although Adelaide may be relatively small when compared to tourist
hotspots like Sydney and Melbourne, it still has its own hidden gems. This Webquest is an
attempt to get students out of this mindset in order to make their stays in Adelaide more
enjoyable.
Task 1 is an attempt to introduce students to using the public transportation website to
enable them to find their way around Adelaide independently. It is relatively brief and
primarily just to get them to use the website.
Task 2 is intended to get students thinking about how they can work together and come
to an agreement that suits everyone in the group as this is often an important part of
group outings.
Task 3 encourages them to use online websites to plan a day out and pre-empt what will
be needed in the way of money, travel arrangements, what the weather will be like etc.
This is an important part of planning a sightseeing trip as a day out can often be ruined
due to unforeseen circumstances.
Task 4 This Final task encourages students to put a plan into action and actually visit a
tourist site by themselves. The criteria of the presentation encourages students to do as
much research about the place as possible and then give a presentation relating their
experience of visiting the site, what they liked and disliked about it. The presentation is
done in order to encourage student reflection as well as to give them a chance to see
where other students went and gain further inspiration for their own travels.
