Fire Action Plan

By Jessica Howard

Volunteer firefighters, all 60,000 of them, are furious

over the state governments push to unionise the

Country Fire Authority (CFA).
Firefighters Union (UFU) has demanded
The United
greater control
of the CFA in an enterprising bargaining
agreement supported by Premier Daniel Andrews.
The agreement, which was uploaded to the UFUs
website, demands for seven paid firefighters at all
CFA jobs, a 19 per cent wage increase, a chauffeur for

every commander and a 15 per cent daily loading for

firefighters working alongside contractors.
Other proposed clauses allow the union to effectively
veto management decisions, and state that professional
firefighters are not to take orders from volunteers,
except in major disasters.
Bacchus Marsh Fire Brigade Captain Nathan Ractliffe
said without a voice, decisions would be made that
impact the way CFA run their business.
We want to be able to make decisions on the ground
and make decisions that affect us as volunteers. This

isnt about money; in my opinion you can pay the

firefighters whatever you want, but what is of concern
is the fact that any decisions that CFA make can be
vetoed, he said.
To date, we havent had any problems or issues with
the [professional] fireys on the fireground. Weve
always had a good working relationship with them
and Im hoping that will continue, we just want to be
able to make our own decisions.

Classic kids stories

By Jessica Howard
Illustrated childrens books dating
back to the 1850s will be the feature of
this years Heritage Book Fete.
Held annually at St Andrews Uniting
Church in Bacchus Marsh, the fete will
offer a large selection of books from
the collection of fete coordinator Mavis
Blackie and Reverend Valerie Johnson.
The books include all the really
popular childrens characters, Ms

Blackie said.
Theres Winnie the Pooh, who turns
90 this year, Alice in Wonderland, who
is 150 years old, and Shirley Temple.
Another one that is really quite
lovely is by Walter Crane. It is titled
The Babys Opera and was published
around 1870.
Reverend Johnson, who was a
childrens librarian for a period of tenyears, said she would be discussing
the development and history of

illustrations in books over Devonshire

tea.
Anyone is welcome to listen. Entry
will be free, however we will be
accepting donations on the door. All
funds will be donated to Frontier
Services, the Uniting Church charity
who work with people in [rural areas]
across Australia, she said.
The Book Sale will run from 12pm
4pm Sunday June 12, and 9am to 2pm
Monday June 13. Cash sales only.

OUT !

By Jessica Howard
Class is dismissed at St Michaels Primary School, forever.
The Springbank school will close at the end of the 2016
school year after close to 150 years of service.
In a letter to the school community earlier this month,
Springbank and St Patricks Gordon Principal Michael
Kennedy said the size of the school, although providing a
unique and intimate learning environment, had been a
regular challenge in terms of its ongoing viability.
As a school, we must meet strict criteria in order to remain
viable, he wrote.
Despite the very best efforts of staff and parents, we find
ourselves on the very edge of the minimum required number
of students (11) for 2017.

This is certainly not a reflection of the work that current or

past members of St Michaels school community have done
and continue to do to ensure our ongoing viability; there
simply arent as many students or families attending our
school as once was the case.
A review into the future of the school included careful
consideration of the needs of current students and families,
projected enrolments and the proximity of other Catholic
schools.
Mr Kennedy, who joined the St Michaels team in 2006, said
it had been a very emotional few weeks.
This is not something any person, principal or community
wishes to go through; but in saying that, Ive been feeling
very supported by the whole community through this
difficult time, he said.

The parents will decide from here where their children will
go. I know some will go to other Catholic Schools closer to
Ballarat and hopefully some will come to St Pats in Gordon.
No matter what, they are being supported in their decision.
Mr Kennedy said 14 students were currently enrolled in the
school, including six grade six students.
The reason we needed to make this decision so early was to
give enough time and support to the families and children of
this school. From here, our first main aim is to make sure the
children continue to have a great and happy year, he said.
We also want to celebrate what is 146 years of Catholic
education in the community of Springbank. There is just such
a beautiful, rural feeling to this place. People have worked
very hard for this school. Everyone knows everyone and it
has been so easy to create strong, personal relationships with
everyone in the community.

Leave Court in action

approved
By Steven Barnes
(Work Exp 3rd Yr Monash Uni)

By Kate Taylor

Moorabool Shire Councils CEO and

a councillor are both walking off the
job temporarily, and for different
reasons.
Central Ward Councillor Paul Tatchell
has been granted a month-long leave
of absence from his role as councillor,
to stand in the federal election.
The term also coincides with Cr
Tatchells recovery period following
an unexpected heart procedure.
Following his announcement that
he is contesting the seat of Ballarat
in the upcoming federal election,
as a National Party candidate, Cr
Tatchell applied to council for a leave
of absence from his councillor duties
until Monday 4 July; the leave was
granted at the June council meeting.
Meanwhile CEO Rob Croxford has
been granted annual leave, approved
at the same council meeting.
Leave was approved from 19 August
to 24 August, over the Christmas
period from 26 December to 10
January, and for 27 March 2017 until
21 April 2017.
The Acting CEO for the period 19
August to 24 August and the period
26 December to 10 January will be
Phil Jeffrey, General Manager of
Infrastructure.
The Acting CEO for the period
27 March to 21 April 2017 will be
Danny Colgan, General Manager of
Community Services.

Despite the cold weather there was a fiery theme

in the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates Court last week.
Paul Camilleri fronted the court in relation to a
fire he lit on his Glenmore property on March 11
this year, within the fire danger period. The court
heard the defendant attempted to burn three large
piles of fallen trees with the CFA attending the
scene. No reports of injury were recorded.
Mr Camilleri who had no prior convictions, said
in his defence I didnt think they were huge fires,
and because it rained the day before and it wasnt
summer, he wasnt breaking any laws.
He also claimed he should not be made to pay
any fines as the CFA had damaged his property
and gave him more than five days work worth
of damage.
In his sentencing Magistrate Andrew Capell
asked Mr Camilleri, Did it not occur to you that
March is still hot?
He also said that situations like this are something
every outlander has to deal with.
He was fined $400 plus court costs.

Codey Jennings also faced the court for a fire

related charge, this time for lighting a fire without
a permit.
The court heard Mr. Jennings set fire to rubbish
as per a request by his landlord at an Inglis street
property on April 5 this year.
The CFA arrived at the scene and noted Mr.
Jennings attempting to put out the fires and
concluded he must have done something wrong.
In his defence, Mr Jennings said he did not think
he was doing anything wrong and when asked
about the size of the fires joked, It was only up to
my knees I dont like them too high!
He was fined $250 plus court costs.

Fire Action Plan

from page 1

Member for Ballarat, Joshua Morris said

the Premiers endorsement of the UFUs
demands were a complete betrayal of the
volunteers who bravely protect regional
communities in Western Victoria.
A UFU takeover of the CFA would
jeopardise a volunteer based community
organisation that projects homes, businesses
and lives, he said.
Local knowledge is absolutely essential
to fighting fires, protecting properties and
saving lives. Suggesting that outside paid
firefighters would do a better job than local
volunteers is an insult to Victorias 60,000
volunteer firefighters.
The Fair Work Commission has also backed
the union takeover, with Commissioner
Julius
Roe
delivering
non-biding
recommendations supporting the UFUs
demands on Wednesday (June 1).
State Member for Buninyong Geoff Howard
urged the community to wait until an
announcement had been made before
jumping to conclusions.

No one can say that the Government has

let [the CFA] down because a decision is yet
to be made, he said.
In so many places throughout the report
from The Fair Work Commission, it states
that nothing in the agreement shall prevent
volunteers from providing their services
to the community. A number of the
recommendations only relate to integrated
fire stations, where there are paid firefighters
as well as CFA volunteers; therefore those
particular recommendations do not relate to
anyone in my electorate.
Mr Howard said brigades such as
Buninyong and Ballan were 100 per cent
volunteer based, with no career firefighter
involvement.
The Government fully supports volunteers
and career firefighters and values the
work they do every single day to keep our
community safe.
Premier Andrews must now decide whether
to push the proposed agreement through
Cabinet or continue negotiations.

Council Clips

By Kate Taylor

A proposed lease agreement for poultry facilities at the Bacchus

Marsh Racecourse and Recreation Reserve is out for public
comment.
The lease is proposed to give exclusive rights to the poultry
facilities to two clubs that have operated there for many years,
the Bacchus Marsh and Melton Poultry Club and the Footscray
and District Poultry Club.
The lease agreement provides the Poultry Clubs with
exclusive management and usage rights in return for the Clubs
undertaking the majority of maintenance required at the facility.
The clubs would also pay a combined annual fee of $530, CPI
adjusted annually, to go towards maintaining common areas.
The lease is for an initial seven years, with two more seven-year
options for renewal.
The proposed term of the lease is suitable given the significant
investment that both the clubs have already made to the Poultry
Club facilities and the future plans the Club has to improve
the facilities with significant investment from the governing
association available once a lease agreement is entered into,
read a report tabled at the May council meeting.

Avoid
frozen pipes
It has been a winter wonderland in
many parts of the Moorabool Shire
and Jack Frost has arrived, with Frosty
the Snowman not far behind.
Western Water is advising customers
to put a cover on their water meter
when frost is predicted to avoid a frozen meter, and no water.

Every winter when there is a cold

snap we get phone calls from people
with no water due to a frozen meter,
Western Waters General Manager,
Customer and Community Relations,
Graham Holt.

Its no fun having no hot water on a

freezing cold morning, so we are urging people to think ahead and cover
their meters.
Mr Holt says a frozen meter means
no water for the household until the
meter thaws out, so the best option is
to ensure it doesnt freeze in the first
place.
There are plenty of options for covering your meter, including a large
bucket, cardboard box, half a tyre, a
hessian bag or an old blanket.
The important thing is to ensure

the meter is fully covered to trap the

warmer air inside, and that the cover
can be easily removed for meter reading and maintenance, Mr Holt says.

Frozen pipes can also be an issue if

the weather is very cold. To stop pipes
from freezing, first ensure they are
clean and not leaking, then wrap in
insulation material (available from
hardware shops).

website, at WesternWater.com.au.

The Essential Services Commission has approved an application

by Moorabool Shire Council to raise rates by 3.5 per cent.
However, each ratepayers rates notice may increase or decrease
by varying percentages on the previous year, as properties were
re-valued this year.
The increase is one per cent above the state-governments
recommended imposed rates cap of 2.5 per cent, with
Moorabools 2016-17 draft annual budget already prepared
using the 3.5 per cent increase.
The additional 1 per cent rate increase will provide a further
$259,000 in revenue and, according to the draft budget, will
enable new and upgrade capital expenditure to proceed next
financial year.
Mayor Allan Comrie said in reviewing the ESC decision, it
is interesting to note Commission Chair Dr Ron Ben-Davids
comment.
In approving the higher caps for the six municipalities, the
Commission needed to satisfy itself that higher rates were
consistent with the long-term interests of their communities.
We considered each councils application on its merit, Dr BenDavid said.
Neighbouring shire City of Ballarat had its application for a rate
increase rejected.
Mayor Comrie pointed out that the increase in general rates
along with the revaluation of some properties across the shire
would result in rate increases above the average for 2016 /17 for
some property owners.
We will continue to work with those ratepayers who may
experience difficulties in meeting their rates payments for next
year, Mayor Comrie said.

At this years federal election, the way you vote for the
Senate has changed and its important that you understand
how to vote correctly.
On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose
to vote either above or below the line.
If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number
at least 6 boxes. Put the number 1 in the box for the party
or group that is your first choice, a 2 for your second
choice and so on until youve numbered at least 6 boxes.

If you choose to vote below the line, you need to number

at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates
in the order of your choice.
Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed.
On the green ballot paper, you need to number every box,
starting with the number 1 for your first choice, 2 for your
second choice and so on until you have numbered every box.
How to vote instructions will be clearly displayed on your
ballot paper. Dont worry if you make a mistake just ask
for another ballot paper.

Your vote will help shape Australia.

Yoga and
Well-Being
Centre
Opening in
Bacchus Marsh
Modern life is plagued by a multitude of
disorders that we just accept as normal.
Physically, joint replacements, arthritis,
weight issues, diabetes, digestive
problems,
cardio-vascular
disease,
respiratory problems and cancer are
common. Mental imbalances such as
stress, anxiety, depression, frustration,
anger and addictions are all something
that most of us experience at some
point in our lives. Even getting a good
nights sleep is difficult for many people.
This all leads to an inability to find
peace, happiness and fulfilment. These
disorders are so common that we just
accept them as normal and with all that
is happening in our lives, we can feel
helpless to change anything.
For thousands of years, psychologists,
spiritual
leaders,
writers,
poets,
mystics and many others have given us
glimpses into finding well-being, peace,
happiness and fulfilment. Yoga is one
solution that dates back 4000 years and
presents a complete system for health
and happiness. The system of yoga
works through the layers of our being;
the physical body, our energy (also
known as chi in Chinese medicine),

the various levels of our mind, and at a

spiritual level to help us find what we all
want; health, peace and happiness.
Urway Yoga and Good Living is a new
centre in Bacchus Marsh and uses this
system of yoga to provide a range of
services to help bring balance to each
layer.
Group classes include yoga,
pilates, mindfulness, meditation and
deep relaxation. There will also be
individual services such as massage, one
on one yoga sessions, life coaching and
weight loss. It is also planned to make
available reiki, kineaseology, tai chi and
other complimentary services in the near
future. These services are available to
everyone, both men and women, all ages
and body shapes, no matter what your
physical condition or state of mind. At
Urway Yoga and Good Living, you can
find the right combination that will help
you find total well-being and happiness.
Classes begin on Saturday June 11th.

Dear Editor,
For a second time, I have
read about the dangerous
conditions on the Geelong/
Bacchus Marsh Road. I travel
this road twice a week, every
week and it certainly has its
danger spots but some of the
atrocious driving I see each
trip would attribute more of
the accidents to human error
and dangerous risk taking
than road conditions.
New flexible safety barriers
are very costly and certainly
dont improve driver behaviour. Such expenditure
would be better spent on, yet
again, improving Woolpack
Road (which is a disaster
waiting to happen). Surprisingly, roadworks around the
two prisons near Geelong,
on this particular road, have
moved at a very efficient rate
and even there, drivers take
ridiculous risks to them-

selves and, more often, to

others.
Is our generation in such
a permanent hurry or constantly distracted on mobile
phones? I see this as the
real problem in road safety
today.

Dear Editor,
The coalition government
will break its promise of
delivering 25 megabits per
second (Mbps) broadband to
all Australians by 2016.
The NBN proposal for
Dales Creek / Greendale /
Korobeit will not be able to
achieve any more than 12
Mbps. Incorporating 40m
towers, fixed wireless and
1980s microwave dish back
link technology, before getting near optical fibre; this is
slower than ADSL technology which can deliver up to
20Mbps getting slower further from the exchange.
I for one would sooner have
a new exchange with ADSL
than these sad towers. Having asked, waited 13 years
for ADSL and unable to get
it due to a pair-gain copper
line, this maximum 12Mbps
NBN solution is woeful. I
suggest this NBN rollout
has simply become a race
for subscription numbers
instead of any idea of futureproofing our technology.
As an IT professional with
a family of three children,

I think it is time we spoke

up about what we really
expect, want and need as
an essential service for our
community.

Dear Editor,
Volunteers work for the love
of their communities and for
their fellow man. The CFA
men and women are caring,
brave people who train and
work to a rigid controlled
system.
I relate the current position
with the union to the thousands of our early native
drovers, boundary riders
and farm hands who were
happy working for the love
of their beasts. They did
not want money, they didnt
know what it was and were
happy with the hats, boots,
clothing, meat and flour
the station owners gave
them. Of course when the
landowners were ordered to
pay their workers hundreds
of them, especially the old
generation, had to go walkabout leaving only those few
behind that the cattle station
could afford to pay.
Our volunteer CFA firemen
need to be left alone. I believe money is truly the root
of all evil.

Pattons Prayer
with Pastor Merv Patton

The Story
of Isaac
Isaac was born to old parents. No, I mean really old.
Poor Abraham and Sarah
had waited so long that
Isaacs birth put a smile on
their face. His name means
laughter. Isaac grew up with
a step-brother Ishmael, but
after Isaacs dad Abraham
split from Ishmaels mum
Hagar, he was left without a
sibling.

It is hard on a boy who is

growing up with the expectations of taking over the
family name, and heading
up a dynasty with hundreds
of people and sheep, goats,
camels etc. of great wealth.
Isaac had known the nomadic lifestyle of his father,
and he would continue the
same way.
Abraham then sent his oldest and most trusted servant
to his birth place in Mesopotamia, to bring back a
wife for Isaac, who was now
40 years old. The prayers
of Abraham, Isaac and the

servant were answered

when months later, the servant arrived with a beautiful
bride named Rebekah. Isaac
and Rebekah fell madly in
love with each other.

Like all of us, Isaac endured many testing times

including drought, famine
and hostility from other
powerful nations and clans.
Shortly thereafter, Isaac had
his epiphany, with the God
of his father, which would
mark his future life for good.

It took quite a time for Rebekah to fall pregnant, and

when she gave birth she had
twins, Esau and Jacob. These
boys would both thrill Isaac
and cause him much distress
along the way. Esau was a
mans man, rough and rugged; he lived outdoors and
was a great hunter. Jacob
was an indoor guy, prone to
deceiving people to get what
he wanted.
The Bible tells the story
warts and all. Ordinary

people who faced challenges

as we all do. Often they were
in danger and had to sleep
with a sword nearby. Lack
of water, drought, moving
large herds and re-erecting
their tents and shelters was
part of their lifestyle.
We all have a story to tell,
and your story may include
a history of hurts and problems. Like Abraham, Isaac
and Jacob, we may have to
struggle to succeed against
much difficulty.
The first couple of steps
from AA says it well.

We admitted we were powerless and that our lives had

become unmanageable. We
came to believe that a Power
greater than ourselves could
restore us to sanity.
I believe if you keep your
faith, you keep your trust,
you keep the right attitude,
if youre grateful, youll see
God open up new doors;
Joel Osteen.

V/LINE COMMUNITY NOTICE

Winter closure NIGHT WORKS

sets in
Tuesday 14 June to Friday 24 June

V/Line is completing maintenance works along the rail line

between Ballarat and Deer Park.

Selected roads and tracks

throughout Victorias forests
and parks are set to be temporarily closed.
As part of an annual program, The Department of
Environment, Land, Water
and Planning (DELWP) will
be closing selected areas
during winter and spring
to ensure driver safety and
protect forest and park roads
from damage during the
cooler months.
DELWP State Roads and
Bridges Planner, Craig Lang
said some roads and tracks
have been closed from Sunday May 1, with others to fol-

low on June 16, just after the

Queens Birthday weekend.
These early closures are
necessary in some parts of
the state because the roads
and tracks in our parks and
forests have the potential to
become wet, he said.
The closures are important
because our forest roads and
tracks become much more
difficult for drivers to use
safely over this period. Some
forest tracks would suffer
significant damage if they
were left open all year round,
so we assess them each year
and then after consultation,
with stakeholders including
Four Wheel Driver Victoria,
close any that require it.

Mr Lang said most of the

roads and tracks would be
re-opened in time for the
Melbourne Cup weekend.
As always, we want anyone driving in our parks and
forests to stay on the formed
roads, take their rubbish
home and take particular
care with campfires, so that
everyone can enjoy Victorias magnificent parks and
forests.
For those wanting to plan
their trip, go to the Public
Access map site in the visiting parks and forests section
at www.depi.vic.gov.au.
For maps of the early closures in parks, visit www.
parks.vic.gov.au.

Due to the nature of these works, construction noise will be

present during the night.
Works are expected to take place for approximately 30 minutes
at each location.
Thank you for your patience while we complete this essential
maintenance.

WHATS ON

Police Rounds

A Good Samaritan has handed a quantity of cash in to Bacchus

Marsh police, however the owner is yet to be found.
The money was found at a store on Gell Street on Thursday, May 19.

Police released a statement after the owner was still yet to be located
more than ten days later, but a Section Sergeant told The Moorabool
News on Friday (June 3) that nothing more had progressed.
At this stage no one has come forward to claim it, he said.

Police are not releasing the exact amount of cash but it is not more
than $500.
Anyone who believes they may have lost money in this area should
call Bacchus Marsh Police Station on 5366 4500.

Water Act 1989

NOTICE OF PROPOSAL TO ABOLISH THE BUNGAREE
WATER SUPPLY PROTECTION AREA
The Minister for Water gives notice under section 27 (4)
(a) of the Water Act 1989 of the proposal to abolish the
Bungaree Water Supply Protection Area (WSPA).
The development of a statutory management plan for the
Bungaree WSPA is no longer considered necessary as there
is a cap on licence extractions, extractions are metered and
there is a monitoring regime in place. The Bungaree WSPA
is currently managed by a local management plan and
this is considered more appropriate as it provides a more
flexible, efficient and effective way to clarify water-sharing
arrangements.
The proposed action will see the Bungaree WSPA becoming
a groundwater management area and would allow for
permanent transfers to occur. This proposal does not alter
the permissible consumptive volume. The Bungaree WSPA
is currently fully allocated so no new groundwater licences
can be issued.
A map of the Bungaree WSPA (reference LGL./97-224) and
the details of the permissible consumptive volume can be
inspected at www.srw.com.au or during business hours at
Southern Rural Water, 88 Johnson Street, Maffra.
Submissions about the proposed abolition of the Bungaree
WSPA are invited. Any submissions should be lodged by
12 July 2016 and addressed:
Proposed abolition of the Bungaree Water Supply
Protection Area,

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics

The Centre Cross Country meet was held at Rupert Vance Moon Reserve
at Bacchus Marsh on Saturday morning. The new venue provided some
very fast times, as the athletes took advantage of a flat, fast course. Races
were held around the Reserves gravel paths and along the Lerderderg
River.

This weekend BMLAC families will be travelling up the Hume Highway

to participate in the Benalla Cross Country Open Day. This event is now a permanent meet
on the Centre calendar. Whilst a majority of the athletes will be competing, many parents
will also take part in the adult races, endeavouring to assist the Centre in winning back the
Benalla Perpetual Trophy.
Early bird entries close this Wednesday for the Region Cross Country Championships to
be held on Saturday 25th June at Geelong Baptist College, Lovely Banks. This event is only
available to registered Under 9-15 athletes. Enter via the link on the Centre website www.

Last weekend the G B Forestry Cobras welcomed Lake

Wendouree to Maddingley Park and unfortunately not all
results went our way on the day. In football the seniors
were playing for top of the ladder position and though
having plenty of the ball for most of the game, they could
not convert. Lake Wendouree were very slick with their ball
movement all day which on occasion, caught our players
napping but to the GB Forestry Cobras credit they fought
the game out, eventually going down by 21 points. The
reserves also had a tough and close game where there
was nothing between the 2 sides all day, going into the
last quarter the GB Forestry Cobras had a 2 point lead,
but were over run in the last quarter eventually losing by
17 points. The U18s got off to a tight start but in the 2nd
quarter stamped their authority on the game, lead strongly
by D. Bishop, B. Baldo, J. Johns, B. Croxford and L. Pigott
with L. Whyte-Marshall kicking 5 goals, eventually running
out victorious by 50 points.
In the Netball, again the girls came up against some pretty
tough opposition and unfortunately not all teams were
successful on the day. The A graders lost their game by 25
goals, the B graders had a great win in a tight game running
out victors by 4 goals, the C graders also had a very tight
game but were unfortunate on the day losing by 2 goals, the
D graders were not so lucky and were well beaten on the
day by 25 goals and the 19 and Unders fought out a very
tight game but went down by 3 goals.
In the Womans Football they also had a very hard fought
game, after being held scoreless for the first half the girls
kicked 5 goals in the second half and, though keeping
Lake Wendouree scoreless in the second half, eventually
fell short by 24 points. Best players were D. Menzies, M.
Clarke, E. Crawford, C. Thorne, A. Bertram and L. Stepnell.

Blues purr past Cats

Round 8 v Newlyn

Football

The Ballan Seniors returned to the winners circle

with a convincing win over
Newlyn. The team managed
to keep their opponents goalless till after half time and
dominated the play out of
the centre. Jason McNamara
ruled the centre square and
up forward Justin McConnell and Zac Peoples were
in complete control. McConnell ended the day with five
goals. The Cats were able to
regroup in the second half
and managed to get two
goals in each quarter. The
Blues now have a week off
before venturing to Skipton
and if they can string a few
wins together they should
break into the top eight.
Final Score - Ballan 13 15
93 def Newlyn 4 6 30
Best - Z. Peoples, J. McNamara, D. Galea, D. Tanti, S.
Hitchings, L. Souter.
The Reserves were well off
their game in the first quarter and were trailing by two
goals at the first break, but
they swung to action in the
second quarter booting five
goals, holding the Cats goalless. Austin Bongart was on
fire up forward and the Pike
of old showed that he still
had silky skills. Watts also
had a good day up forward
booting four, and dishing
out others to his teammates.
The forwards accuracy was
a key contributing factor to
the Blues win. In defence
Jack Shaw and Judd grew in
confidence and effectiveness
as the game went on.
Final Score - Ballan 12.1 73
def Newlyn 7 5 47
Best - A. Bongart, D. Pike, J.
McGuire, D. Prozzo, J. Shaw,
D. OHanlon.
The Under 18s were distracted by a late start due
to an injury delay in the
Under 15s match. The Cats
were more focused in the
shortened game and it was
a fierce encounter with both
sides never dropping their
intensity. The Blues progressively reeled in their opponents with the forward
line connecting in the final
quarter. Campbell Sparrow
marked strongly up forward
with Hayden Thompson and
other runners in the team
having the wind in their sail
but the clock beat the Blues.
Final Score - Ballan 5 3 33
lost Newlyn 5 7 37
Best - L. Currie-Jones, K.
Katic, C. Brown, C. Sparrow,
L. Snaith, H. Thompson.
With new season coach
John Mullane at the helm,
the Under 15s could do no
wrong and the previous loss
certainly gave the Blues extra impetus. The Blues had
runners all over the ground

and they were ably led by

Lachlan Trickey, who never
stopped all day. Up forward
the Blues shared the spoils
around with eight individual goal scorers. In the second
half the Blues held their opponents scoreless and piled
on the goals in a great team
effort. The game was cut
short in the last quarter after one of the Cats players
was injured. The solid win
keeps the Blues fourth on
the ladder and a few further
wins in the next month will
ensure they are cemented in
that position.
Final Score - Ballan 9 9 63
def Newlyn 1 3 9
Best - L. Trickey, S. Dehnert,
H. Lyle, L. Hodge, G.
ASpeculo, M. Casey.
Another convincing win
to the Under 12s, who are
certainly starting to mesh
together and showing some
real team work. The Blues
lead from the start and had
the bulk of the play. Up
forward the trio of Pascoe,
Gates and Popple were at
their best and converted truly. Young coaches Tom McGregor and Zac Boland were
delighted with the great
team effort and the way the
team continues to improve
each week.
Final Score -Ballan 5 2 32
def Newlyn 1 1 7
Best - N. Neumann, J.
Calleja, B. Conroy, J. Bower,
J. Speakman, A. Eskdale.

In the first match for winter,
the junior girls started in
blistering form. Both teams
were handling the ball well
in the wet and cold conditions and were playing a
high standard of netball,
with the scores level at quarter time. The break did not
serve Ballan well, with the
team starting the second
quarter slow giving Newlyn
a chance to sneak in a few
early goals. The Ballan girls
then responded and it was
goal for goal for the rest of
the quarter. The third quarter saw the skill level drop
slightly as the chill began
to set in. Costly turnovers
allowed Newlyn to score
some vital goals before Ballan again responded. With
an even last quarter, Ballan
tried hard to get the lead
back but found it a little out
of reach. Ballan 17 lost Newlyn 35.
Best - Anais Clifford, Bethany Boland, Maddie Alcock.

By Michael Howard
Punters left Tabcorp Park
Melton on a high after favourites dominated the nine-race
card, including well-travelled
three-year-old High Gait,
who added a third Australian Group 1 to her decorated
career.
Driver Chris Alford brought
up his 200th win in Victoria
for the season in the Victoria Trotters Oaks when he
steered High Gait to a hardearned victory, with the Muscles Yankee filly out of Regal
Volo having to fight off a terrific Red Hot Tooth to claim
the bulk of the $60,575 stakes.
The win rewarded the efforts
of trainer Nicole Molander,
who has taken back responsibility for the filly after a stint
in leading Kiwi trainer Mark
Purdons care.
The Group 1 win was hard
earned, with Kari Males filly
Red Hot Tooth (Yankee Paco/
Karaka Tooth) defying her $36
odds to lead impressively. She
was joined by the favourite at
the 400m mark but never gave
up the fight, with High Gaits
class edge bearing fruit in the
dying stages to win by 1.3m.
It was the second of a dou-

having earlier steered Our

Stewart.

com.au Pace for two consecutive victories in the hands of
driver Gavin Lang.
Alan Tubbs four-year-old
Ponder gelding, Tee Cee Bee
Macray, again produced a
show-stopping burst to salute, this time winning the
Empire Stallions Vicbred
Platinum Metropolitan Pace
final for driver Greg Sugars.
From last at the bell, Tee Cee
Bee Macray was given cover
into the race before taking
off four-wide around the
last corner to pursue Kerryn
Mannings heat winner Miss
Dreamin and Mildura flyer
Murranji Track, who emerged
from the box seat into the
sprint lane. None could match
Tee Cee Bee Macrays irresistible pace.
Others to venture into the
winners circle included talented trotters Illawong Byron

and Claudys Princess.

Trainer-driver Jodi Quinlans two-year-old gelding by
Muscle Mass out of Illawong
Blush registered a fourth win
from seven starts when Illawong Byron won the Group
2 Haras Des Trotteurs Tatlow
Stakes.
There were further smiles
in trainer Michael Barby and
driver Anne-Maree Conroys
camp after It Is Billy also
confirmed his top billing to
win the Free For All, a second
straight success for the It Is I
gelding out of Glenlyon Glad.

last quarter clinched the deal
for It Is Billy.
Also making it two wins in
as many meetings at Tabcorp Park Melton was Tenno
Dance, who won the Trotters
Handicap for trainer Glenn
Sharp and driver Josh Duggan. The five-year-old by Tennotrump out of Disco Dance
registered a half-head win
from Jimbo Johnson.
The night closed with an old
favourite from trainer David Aikens stable, Smudge
Bromac, winning the Claiming Pace, a 34th career win for
the 10-year-old veteran of 189
races.
