Justin?

In this task YOU are going to EXPLORE situations were an

amount is decreased by more than one percentage.

Where to begin?
Multiple percentage Decrease
Exploring the OVERALL EFFECT of decreasing an amount by two
percentages, both of which are multiples of ten.
1. The percentage pair shown below decreases a quantity; find

the equivalent
each case.

single percentage decrease

in

a. 10% followed by 20%

b. 10% followed by
30%
c. 10% followed by 40%
37%
46%
28%
Does it matter the order in which the percentages are calculated is
10% followed by 30% the same as 30% followed by 10%? No it
doesnt matter what order the percentages are calculated in the
answer will still stay the same either way because it is the same
number just in a different order.

2. Based on the example given and what you have done in part 1)
above, can you see any connections between the pairs of
percentages and the equivalent single percentage?
The tens are the same in the answer, they go up in tens and the units get
subtracted by 1

3. Investigate your ideas further by looking at what happens in the

following cases
a. 10% followed by 50%
b. 10% followed by
60%
c. 10% followed by 70%
55%

64%

73%

4. DESCRIBE patterns in the information you have collected so far.

You start with 28% for discount of 10% follow by 20% and
then increase the tens (10) by one and decrease the units by
one.
5. Based on what you have found out , can you write a rule for
finding the equivalent single percentage decrease when
an amount is decreased by 10% followed by a second
percentage decrease of a multiple of 10.
10% followed by 20% by one this is the equivalent single discount
(adds the two together 10% + 20% and then minus 2%
Easier Term: 10% + 20% -1x2% = 28%
6. Investigate what happens when the first percentage decrease is
no longer 10%. For example, what would the equivalent

single percentage decrease be when the first % increase

is (THERE ARE 4 ANSWERS YOU COULD DO ALL WORKING IS
BELOW)
a. 20%, followed by another % which is a multiple of 10
44%
b. 30%, followed by another % which is a multiple of 10
58%
Hint: again put your information in a table.

7. Do any of the PATTERNS you saw in part 4) still apply? Are there any
new PATTERNS
you are able to describe this time? The pattern still applys but there
is another pattern which is when you choose a multiple of 10 and
then plus it buy 10%

8. Does your previous RULE still work ordo you need a new one..? The
previous rule still works but there are other methods that also works
and you can use them
9. What would your advice be to Justinhow could he quickly,
without electronic help, have calculated the net discount? He
could have just used the method I did in the first question which
to start with 100 but use his own percentages he could also use
what I did it question 6 ( What I did in question 1 and 6 is below)

Q1:
A.
To make it easy start with $100
Discount 10% of 100= $10
Discount 20% OF $90= 2X10%= 2X$9= 18
Left with 90-$18=$72
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN $100 and $72 IS= $28
ANSWER=28%

B. START with $100

Discount 10% of 100%= $10
Left with $100 $10= $90
Discount of 30% of $90= 3x10% which equals 3x$9 = $27
Left with $90 - $27 = $63
The difference of $100 and $63 = $37
ANSWER= 37%

C. START with $100

Discount of 10% of $100= $10
left with $100 - $10= $90
discount of 40% of $90= 4x10% = 4x $9 = $36
Left with $90-$36 = $54
The difference of $100 and $54 = $46

ANSWER= 46%

Q6:
A: start with $100
Decrease 20% gives $100-20%= 100- 2 lots of 10% = 2x10= $20
Left with $100 - $20 = $80
Now decrease by 30% gives $80 30%= $80 3 lots of 10% = $80
3x8 = $80 - $24 = 56$
Left with $56 which is a single discount of 100 56 = 44%

B: start with 100

Decrease 30 gives 100 3 lots of 10
= 100 3x 10 = $100 30
= 70
40%
No decrease by 40% gives $70 4 lots of 10%
= $70 4 x $7

=70- $28
= 42
left with $42 this is an equivalent single discount of $100 - $42 = 58%
