Introduction
Marissa Mayer is the CEO of Yahoo, inc. She led the
development of Google's most successful products for more
than 10 years and was appointed CEO of Yahoo in 2012, at
the age of 37.
Mayer was hired, in part, to sort out Yahoos identity crisis
Immediately from her start as CEO she was struggling with
leadership issues.

Why was Marissa Mayer a poor


leader?
Mrs. Mayer did not take the time or did not have the
willingness to fully understand the corporate culture that was
present when she started as CEO. She wanted to change a
culture in a short period without understanding the culture in
the first place.
Mrs. Mayer put little effort in gaining trust, especially from the
workforce itself.
Mrs. Mayer attempted to keep layoffs secret by not notifying
employees properly and creating a culture of fear and even
paranoia as nobody knew if or when they would be fired. This
resulted in talented employees quitting their jobs and thus
enhancing the negative spiral

Mrs. Mayer enjoyed being in the spotlight as
CEO instead of having the attention focusing
on her team and workforce, which could have
been used as a form of motivation. However,
she ignored this fact and more or less
neglected others over her own pride.
During Mrs. Mayer's reign there was also a
lack of clear, easy to understand and
implement strategies.

Lastly, Mrs. Mayer was very convinced of her own
skills and knowledge that she did little effort to
learn from others or challenge her own, personal
views on various topics. She thought that she knew
everything better than other people and did not
take other people's suggestions or ideas/views into
account

Competency perspective of leadership


Several competencies and personal characteristics are
required in order that a leader may lead with superior

Based on the previous performance analysis of Mrs. Marissa
Mayer. It is safe to conclude that she has failed to perform
leadership competencies to lead effectively.
Competencies and personal characteristics such as
personality and self-concept competency are found missing
on the performance analysis of Mrs. Marissa Mayer as she did
not take the time or did not have the willingness to fully
understand the corporate culture that was present when she
started as CEO. She also put little effort in gaining trust,
especially from the workforce itself.
Other than that, Mrs. Mayer is lacking of integrity, Knowledge
of the Business, and Emotional intelligence as she attempted
to keep layoffs secret by not notifying employees properly
and creating a culture of fear, and there was also a lack of
clear, easy to understand and implement strategies.
