Subject Overview: This course prepares students with the writing skills necessary for STAAR
testing and college readiness. Students will be expected to show written comprehension of
expository, narrative, and descriptive texts. In addition, students will answer revising and
editing questions using knowledge of English grammar and mechanics (e.g. sentence structure,
punctuation, capitalization). A significant component of the students grade will include
keeping an organized three-ring binder. The binder will not be kept in the classroom.
Students are expected to bring their binder to class every day without exception.

Differentiation for Pre-AP/GT Students:


1. Students will use creative thinking skills to write creative and original poetry/short
stories throughout the year.
2. Students will participate in cooperative learning through numerous group activities
during class.
3. Students will select a topic of interest, write a research paper, and create a diagram to
present to the class. Student will be graded for speaking, writing, and organizational
skills.

1 yellow highlighter
1 box of Kleenex tissue paper
Hand sanitizer and/or disinfecting wipes
1 inch three-ring binder (any color)
1 packet of dividers
1 pack of COLLEGE RULED loose leaf notebook
paper
2 COLLEGE RULED composition notebooks
1 box of Crayola markers (thin)
1 bottle of liquid glue
1 pair of scissors
1 sharpener
Recommended: a pencil bag
***Student must bring his/her backpack to class every
day.
***Please keep in mind that teachers are not provided
with Kleenex or hand sanitizers. It is important for
EVERY student to bring the necessary supplies in order
to maintain a comfortable learning environment.

BISD Grading Policy: Brownsville I.S.D.s grading procedure will be followed


for: daily assessments, major assessments, and final exams. Assessments will be
based on written assignments, tests, essays, group and/or individual projects, oral
presentations, and portfolios.
BISD Homework Policy: Homework will be assigned at least twice per week
(subject to change at teachers discretion). It will consist of any work not
completed in class, including written compositions. It is important that students
turn in homework on time. Homework not turned in at the beginning of class will
be considered late.
BISD Make-Up Work & Test Policy: Students will be given an opportunity to
make up work as a result of absences. All assignments must be made up within the
number of days absent (ie: two days absent=two days to make up work).
BISD Late Work Policy: Students will have the opportunity to turn in late work
to improve their grades. They will get one extra day. However, the maximum they
will receive is a 70. If assignment is not turned in at the beginning of class, it will
be considered late.
BISD Retesting: Students must make arrangements with the teacher to retest.
BISD Cheating Policy: Cheating on a test or assignment will result in an
automatic zero. Students will not be allowed to retest.
Passes: Students will only be allowed nurse and LIMITED restroom passes during
English class. Counselor, library, and office visits will not be issued during class
time.
Class/Team Rules:
1. Follow all BISD rules.
2. No food, gum, or sugary drinks allowed.
3. Come to class prepared with all required supplies and materials; respect
other peoples property.
4. Raise your hand before speaking or getting permission to leave your
desk.

5. One person speaks at any given time. Respect peers and teachers
at all times.
6. Electronic devices are STRICTLY prohibited.
Severe Infractions: Referral to administration
In addition to class rules, students are expected to abide by campus rules, in
particular, the dress code. Failure to abide by classroom and/or campus rules will
result in consequences that range from a warning to parent/teacher conferencing
and ultimately referral to administration.
Tardy Policy: All tardies will be documented on the class attendance and Review
360. Student is responsible for entering the class and resuming work without
disrupting the rest of the class. At the fifth tardy to class, student will be
referred to administration.

are in place should my son/daughter make the choice to break any of the classroom and/or campus rules
