Summary
This Marine Information Notice announces the publication of the third amendment to the Code of Safe Working
Practices for Merchant Seamen.
Background
1.

A revised Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seamen was published in July 1998 after
consultation with various sectors of the industry.

2.

The code is arranged in four sections

Section 1

deals with the regulatory background to the advice and general principles of health and safety.

Section 2

gives general advice for seafarers.

Section 3

covers specific work activities.

Section 4

deals with safety for specialist ship operations.

The Code is a loose-leaf publication, and companies may subscribe to a standing order system for the issue of
amendments. The Stationery Office will provide details of this system when copies of the Code are purchased.

Carriage of the Code is mandatory and governed by the Merchant Shipping (Code of Safe Working Practices
for Merchant Seamen) Regulations 1998 (S.I. 1998 I 1838)

New Amendment
6.

The main amendment brings the Code in line with the requirements of The Merchant Shipping Safety Signs
and Signals Regulations 2001 SI 2001 No.3444 and updates references in Chapters 5, 6, Annex 21.1 and
Annex 28.1

The third issue of amendments to the Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seamen (the Code) has
been published by The Stationery Office at a price of 5.
