INTRODUCTION

When I was in second year of my university studies I really wanted to make a surprise for my
girlfriend on her birthday. I promised myself that I could make that happen if I saved up the
money for it myself. So I had to make sure that, some of the money received from loan board
had to be saved up the TSH 500000 it cost to make a surprise for my girlfriend, and a little more
besides. But just before that happened, my brother who was also a student got some problems
with his personal computer and wanted some money to buy a new one. Due to the fact that he
knew I was saving some money for my girlfriend, he told me to give him that money. I really did
want to give up on what I had started, so I thought of refusing to give my brother the money.
SIMILARITIES OF KOHLBERGS AND GILLIGANS THEORY OF MORAL OF
DEVELOPMENT
Selfish Orientation; both I and the beggar were selfish oriented. By using Kohlbergs and
Gilligans theories this can be similar in Pre-conventional Level;
Pre-conventional Level; On Gilligans theory this level is the same as Kohlberg's first level in
that the person is preoccupied with self centered reasoning. Based on the moral dilemma above,
I was only about me and not anyone else
Good Interpersonal Relationships.
Conventional level; based on Gilligan and Kohlbergs theory, although my brothers motives
were good but mine was bad because selfish greedy and only interested in myself,
Kohlbergs model is male centric, and does not give complete picture of the process of
moral development of human beings. Gilligan challenged this and constitutes separate
model of women.
Kohlbergs theory is based upon rationality, duty, impartiality, and universally accepted
abstract principle of justice. Gilligans model is based upon female characteristics of care
and relationship.
Women as per Kohlbergs model are inferior to men so long as moral development is

concerned. Gilligan made this impression null & void by incorporating in her model
female traits of care and love
