A Note
hat is written below is
information collected over a
period of few years and it is
from scattered sources. Saamakkol Aroodam
is a very rare work of prashna which is
followed in rural Tamilnadu. We did not
know that it is the same as Jainendramala, a
rare work on prashna written by a Jain
Monk many centuries back or so, the exact
dating of it is not known to us and hence it
can be just a century old too. Many years
back it was told to us by a Delhi astrologer
practising nadi astrology that his Guru who
is a south Indian had taught him
Jainendramala which as per him is the best
system and he told us that it originates in
the south. We searched but even scholars of
astrology had not heard of it. Then it took
2003 to 2008 to hunt for the text. Finally we
got an English version of it, the translator of
it
was
not
written, later it was told to us by someone that it was the Late Subramanium Shastri (the
first man to translate many astro classics in English in 1920s/30s who had done the
translation). We made someone type out the whole text but other projects took dominance
and this file got lost in the abyss of an unorganized computer. Then in 2010 or so we had
organised a Nadi astrology conference in Telegu University, where a participant who had
travelled from Coimbatore came to us and took us aside and said he practices Jaamakkol
Aroodam (he might have meant as Saamakol Aroodam) and only uses that for predictions
and it is the best system for prediction, he said he has developed a software on it in tamil (or
Malayalam, dont remember now) language. We requested him to write an article but he
did not inspite of a repeated request few months later, it was only later we suspected that
someone might have blocked that article from coming out. Then in 2012, Mr Upendra
Mehta, an elderly man from Saptarishis Astrology Mumbai Club mentioned Jainendramala
(some call it Jinendra Mala) and said one of the most senior Gujarati astrologers (Navin
Bhai Zhaveri) and successful predictors of yesteryears had told him that if one wants to
master prashna they should forget everything else and only use Jainendramala. Mr Mehta
did hunt the text out but it was unsuccessful, finally one day we got the English version of
it in our computer and passed it on to him. 3 months before this in the Chara Dasha
workshop of KN Rao conducted by SA at mumbai, one of our volunteers from Tamilnadu
had come and mentioned about Samakkol Aroodam system, then within a week by chance
we stumbled upon this link http://archive.org/details/samakkoalarudam015246mbp
Upon verification it was found that it was the same Samakkol Aroodam that people were
talking about. We requested Mr Venkataraman to translate this work, unfortunately he is
an honest, straightforward, quiet, humble and lacking Image building skills of astrologers
and completed this within 3 weeks. Hats off to astrologers like him who keep the vidya of
astrology alive by bringing out long forgotten works, others (astrologers and institutions)
seem only busy to boast of their predictive skills or garland themselves in astrological
conferences or only make money out of astrology.
It was later found out that Jainendramala written by a Jain Muni (monk) was translated in
Tamil by someone and later brought out by Late S. Vaidhya Nathan, which was later brought
out by as a similar translation by another Tamil astrologer. This present work is a
translation of Shri Vaidhya Nathans work and it follows below. Hope our readers will
appreciate the hard work of keeping the tradition of our munis and sages alive by using this
prashna method and giving their feedback.

Foreword
Lesson 1
Determination Of Arooda
The name Saamakkol comes out of the union of three factors. A Sajama or Jama in Sanskrit
is a time duration of 3-3/4 ghatikas or 1-1/2 hours. According to Astrological rules a day is 60
Ghatikas or 24 hours.
The day and the night are divided into 8 jamas each making it a total of 16 jamas of 3-3/4
Ghatikas each which is 16 x 3-3/4 = 60 Ghatikas or 8 jamas = 30 Ghatikas. (8 x1-1/2=12 hours
of day +12 hours of night = 1day)
The 1st 8 is from Morning 6 Oclock to Evening 6 Oclock and the 2nd 8 is from Evening 6
Oclock to Morning 6 Oclock of next Sun rise.
Editors notes: The word Jaama is a tamil word which is also written as Saama ( or or
). The references to Jaama gives the time duration as 7 ghatikas. In ancient times there
existed a watch of 3 hours and there were 4 for the day and 4 for the night thus covering 24 hours of
the day. Hence each such 3 hours was considered as Jaama which is equal to 7 ghatikas. However in
this treatise a Jaama is taken as 3 ghatikas or 1 hour 30 minutes. N.Chidambaram Iyer uses the
word Yama in his translation of Jinendramalai.
KOL in Tamil ( ) means a planet. IN this system 8 planets rotate in the same order
over 24 hours. THERE is never any change in their order. These are called KADIR ( )
(SUN), SEI () (MARS), PON ( ) (JUPT), MAL () (MERC), PUGAR
( ) (VENUS), Mandan () (SHANI), SNAKE ( ) (RAHU).
SUN, MARS, JUPITER, MERCURY, VENUS, SATURN AND RAHU.
Editors Note: The Tamil words for the planets have been given and have been used probably
to distinguish the difference between the Saamakkol Planets and the planets as per transit.
The Tamil words are given in a different colour above.
Memorising this unchanging order is a must for the astrologer.
AROODAM is the science of answering a question/s with the help of planets for questions
asked during a specific period of time. It is in fact a problem solving method for guidance of
humanity. Hence this is also known as Prasna Arooda. AROODA in Sanskrit means to
climb up or sit in an elevated position. So in this system the most important thing is where (in
which Rasi) the queriest is seated /standing. Combining the (Sama, Kol, and Arooda) and

The houses can be marked as shown above also. Where ever the client sits that will become
the Arooda. A little practice would be sufficient to discern the Arooda correctly.
Editors Note: Here the North Indian Chart format has not been given. That is because it is a moving
one. The Lagna as well as the house numbers undergo a change depending upon the time and place.
The above circular diagram is exactly the same as defined in Prasna Marga.
Astrologers having table and chair system can put the chairs in a circular or semi circular
fashion. The client will in most cases move the chair to a convenient position from which
the Arooda can be determined. If the client sits exactly opposite the astrologer the Arooda is
Scorpio. If he sits on the right side of astrologer he is in Libra, IF he sits on the right side
corner he is in Virgo. Farther right would be Leo. Similarly the left corner would be
Sagittarius. Further left Capricorn still farther Aquarius and so on. Practice will make you
perfect. Sometimes a group of two or three people may come and each will occupy a
different position. The Person who asks the first question will mark the Arooda and later the other
person/s may ask questions on behalf of the first person. The Arooda will remain the same it will not
change.
Sometimes a couple may come to ask about a problem. Let us presume that it pertains to
their son who failed in exam and is missing from home. The father may say sir the boy is
missing for the last two days and we are terribly anxious. The wife may say sir Please see
that there is no danger to the life of my son and that he will return safely to home. Here
the life of boy has become priority issue hence it has to be decided first.
Sometimes a person with a hefty body may occupy two signs. (This problem is avoided by
using chairs). One day a husband and wife came to me for Arooda. The husband was of
normal girth and he occupied a chair. The wife was hefty and she said the chair may not
hold my weight and sat on the floor. She was blocking two signs and it made difficulty for
me to determine the Arooda. So I told her madam if you would move a little you will get
better ventilation. So she turned and moved a little and my Arooda got fixed. I have stated
this here to illustrate how an astrologer should be intelligent in dealing with the clients.
Now we will see how the Planets occupy the signs.
Editors Notes:
Considering the difficulties in determining the Arooda (Lagna This word is not used here, but it is
understood that whenever we say Arooda it indicates Arooda Lagna), another method is also being
followed in Tamilnadu, details of which are given as under:
Here the time the person comes for asking a query is noted. The hour portion is omitted. i.e. if one
comes for a query at 12:44, the 12 hour is omitted and the minutes alone are taken into consideration.
Each hour of 60 minutes is divided by 12 and the resultant quotient of 5 minutes is the duration of one
Arooda. The counting is done in clockwise manner beginning from Aries. Aries is allotted the first 5
minutes, Taurus the next 5 minutes (i.e. between 6 and 10 minutes) and so on. So in the example
above, the minute portion is 44 and dividing it by 5 (being the duration of one Arooda) we get a
quotient of 8 and a reminder of 4. So 8 Aroodas are over and the person has come in the 9th Arooda
which is 9th sign from Aries-Sagittarius becomes the Arooda.
This is the practice I have noticed and has no relation with regard to the book which is being
translated. This is just for information of the readers only.
Readers may also refer the verses from Prasna Marga Chapter 2, Verses 7 to 11 of B.V.Ramans
translation.

Lesson 2
Daily and hourly position of planets.
In the previous lesson we learnt about determination of Aroodam. The jamas are 8 in
number each of duration of 1-1/2 (1.5) hours both for day and night. Now we will see how
the planets 8 in number serially the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Moon and
Rahu occupy the Rasi chart. The seven of these excluding Rahu are connected with the week
days.

The above is the picture of both North Indian as well as South Indian charts. The time is
normally entered outside the sign. Wherever there is no space outside, we have given the
time inside itself.
See the chart above, the fixed signs are not included in the Jama (see X, there is no time to
it). Secondly Jama always starts from Pisces and moves anti clockwise till it comes to Aries.
(In the North Indian chart it will be clockwise direction). The 8 Jamas of the night also
move in the same fashion.
The directions are four in Number. They are the EAST, SOUTH, WEST and NORTH.
There are 4 sub directions such as SOUTH EAST, SOUTH WEST, and NORTH WEST
AND NORTH EAST. Each sign is divided into 4 parts. The fixed signs give away two
parts each to the adjacent signs on either side. Thus each direction consists of 6 parts or 8x6=
48 parts as shown below:

In Vedic Astrology no planet gets exalted in fixed signs. Moon though exalted in fixed sign
Taurus has no light of its own. It reflects the light of Sun. Secondly its exaltation is in 3
Degree which is added to Aries.
So in Saamakkol Arooda the fixed signs are powerful by themselves and no need for any
planet to be present in them. Whenever these signs become the Lagna it is beneficial in all
cases except questions regarding disease because they indicate prolongation of the disease.
Method to verify the correctness of posting of planets:
At any time
Venus will always be in 7th to Sun
Saturn will always be in 7th to Mars
Moon will always be in 7th to Jupiter
Rahu will always be in 7th to Mercury
If it is not so there is mistake in posting of planets. In the next lesson we will learn about
Udayam (rising sign) soorya veedi (Suns Path) and Kavippu.
Exercise
Post the planets for 10:29:00 hrs on a Saturday
Saamakkol Aroodam
Lesson 3
DETERMINATION OF UDAYAM
UDAYAM is the rising sign at the time of the question. It is also known as Lagna in
Normal astrology but to make it distinct to Saamakkol Arooda it is called as the
UDAYAM. Another important aspect is in normal astrology there are only 12 Lagnas for a
day of 24 hours where are as in Saamakkol there are 12 Lagnas rising for the day and 12 for
the night. This means Lagna changes hourly in Saamakkol Aroodam. Depending on the sun
rise variation there may be a difference of few minutes+/- otherwise it is constant.
This is the speciality of Saamakkol Arooda so let us learn how to fix the Udayam.
The first and most important thing is the Sun Rise and Sun set of the place where the
Arooda is done. Normally the Panchang gives the rising and setting time of Sun for most of
the places. If the difference is more than 30 seconds it can be rounded off to 1 and if it is less
than 30 seconds it can be omitted.
Let us take a practical example to illustrate this point.
Today is 1993 August 6th Friday. Place Tiruchirappalli.
According to Ananda Bodhini Panchanga (This is under Vakya system) the Sun rise/Set
times on 31st of July are shown as 06:05 Am and Sun set 06:36
On 10th of August the sun rise is at 06:08 and Sun Set 06:32 PM
The Sun rise has gone up by 2in 10 days which is equal to 120 seconds. So the difference for
a day = 12 seconds. For 6 days it will be 6x12=72 second or 1and 12. Since sun rise is
advancing this difference to be added to the sunrise time of 31st July.
06:05+1:12=06: 07:17 omitting 17seconds we get Sunrise time on 6th August as 6:07
Editors Note: The actual Sunrise can also be taken if it is available. On 6th August 1993 the exact
Sunrise at Tiruchirappalli was 06:07:59 and the Sunset was at 18:34:10.
Similarly the Sun Set on 10th August is 06:32 which is 4 less than that of 31st July. This is
equal to 240 seconds divided by 10 will give us 24seconds per day. For 6 days it will be 6 x
24 = 144 second or 2and 24 seconds. Omitting 24 seconds we have to deduct 2 from the Sun
set time of 31 July we get 06:36_2 = 06:34 as the sun set time of 6th august.
Thus on the selected date the Sun Rise is 06:07 and Sun set is 06:34 and the difference = 12hrs
and 27 minutes. This is daylight time.
Dividing this figure by 12 we get 1hr and 2and 15 as the movement time of UDAYAM
from one sign to the next. Omitting 15 we can take it as round figure of 1hr and 2 minutes
for the day.
The time interval between Sunset of 6th August and sun rise of 7th august = 11:33 which is
equal to 693 minutes. Dividing this by 12 we get 57and 45 rounding 58 as the movement
time of Udayam during the night of 6th august.
Let us presume a client comes for Arooda on Friday the 6th August at 11 Am. Let us calculate
the UDAYAM:August 6th becomes 22nd of the month of Ashad as per Panchanga. The Sun rises in Cancer
sign from 1st of Ashad. The Lagna moves 4 per degree as per normal astrology. In
SAMKKOL there are 24 Lagnas or 12 each for day and night. So the movement of lagna will
be half the normal or 2. Hence for 22 days of Ashad the movement will be 2 x 22= 44
minutes. The passing time of a lagna is 1:02 minutes in each sign. Sun rise =06:07 +1:02
=07:09.
So 07:09-00:44 = 06:25 is the time of ending of cancer sign in the horizon. Leo rises in the
east at 06:25:00 and will last up to 07:27.The next is Virgo ending at 08:29, Libra ending at
09:31, Scorpio ending at 10:33 hrs. The next is Dhanu1 we get 11:35 as the end of Dhanur.
HENCE at 11 Am the sign on the horizon is Dhanur (Sagittarius) which becomes the
UDAYAM. (UL).
Editors Notes: The horoscopic representation with the planets put inside will look as below: In the
North Indian Format Sagittarius is taken as the Udaya Lagna which is coming in the top. The ending
time of each sign is noted outside the chart. The South Indian format with the planets marked outside
is given below the compound chart.

The above is the Arooda chart in which Venus is in Libra in the 4th Jama and other planets
in serial order from there.
Let us now take the case of a client who comes for Arooda at 08:45 PM. The sun set is 06:34
adding 58 to this will give us 07:32 and deducting 44 we get 06:48 as the ending time of
Cancer sign. Add 00:58 to this. So Leo ends at 07:46 PM add 0:58 to this and Virgo ends at
08:44. Libra rises at 08:45 hence UDAYAM is Libra. The planetary positions will be as

Saamakkol Aroodam
Lesson 4
KAVIPPU
Kavippu means to invert. In Sanskrit it is known as Chhattram (Chatta). (N.Chidambaram
Iyer has termed it as Chhatra). It means after reaching a specific limit, find out the matters
hidden beyond it. In some areas the fisherman invert an umbrella type net in the pond and
through a Hole in the top pick up big fish by inserting hand through it. So also many hidden
aspect can be known by Kavippu. Udayam tells about the future .The Arooda indicates loss
and Kavippu tells about Hidden matters. Kavippu is a strong factor in Saamakkol Aroodam.
Before finding Kavippu we have to learn about Soorya Veedi. (Path of the SUN). Sun
travels in 3 modes they are UTTARAYANA, DAKSHINAYANA and POORVAYANA.
The Transit Of Sun over 3 group of signs is called the Soorya Veedi.
For Vaishakha, Jyeshta, Ashada and Shravana Months the SOORYA VEEDI is Mesha
(Aries).
For Kartika, Margasirsha, Paush (Pushya) and Magha months the Sooryaveedi is Mithun
(Gemini).
For Bhadrapada, Aswin (Ashwayuja) ,Phalguna and Chaitra the Soorya veedi is Vrishabha
(Taurus) rasi.
Editors Notes: For those who are not familiar with the names of the months given above:
In the months when the Sun passes through Taurus, Gemini, Cancer and Leo-sign Aries is known as
Surya Veedhi (the path of the Sun).
In the months when the Sun passes through Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Aquarius, sign
Gemini is known as Surya Veedhi.
And in the months when the Sun passes through Aries, Virgo, Libra and Pisces, sign Taurus is known
as Surya Veedhi.
The names of the months clarification:
In India there are two types of Panchanga (almanac) are in use. One is Sauramana and the other is
Chandramana. Saura means based on movement of Sun and Chandra means based on the movement of
Moon. In Chandramana again there are two types one is from Full Moon to next Full Moon
(Purnimanta) and the other is from New Moon to next New Moon (Amavasyanta). The names of the
months differ in both Chandramana as well as Sauramana. In Tamil Nadu majority people follow
Sauramana Panchang. The Panchang which the original author has referred to also comes under
Sauramana. So he has given actual Tamil names in his Tamil version which has been translated as
above. For the benefit of the readers, I am giving below the names of both the names of the months as
well as the English equivalents. Remember for Chandramana the month starts either from Full Moon
or from New Moon. For the Sauramana the month starts from the day Sun enters the concerned sign
which normally falls in the middle of each English month with plus or minus 1 to 2 days. For example
Mesha (Aries) will start around 14th of April and will last till 13th or 14th of May.
For example today when we are editing this translation (25-08-2013) the Tamil month is Avani or
Simha or Leo to dilute it to English. In Chandramana it is Bhadrapada as per Purnimant (that is who
follow the Full Moon system). Under Amavasyant (those who follow New Moon system), it is
Sravana. Whichever system one follows the position of Sun remains the same which is in Leo. Since
the Sauramana Panchang names the months as per the position of the Sun in a rasi (like Mesha or
Aries, Vrishabha or Taurus), it will be easy to follow the same. Wherever possible we shall mention
the Sauramana months also so that readers can understand where the Sun will be and decide about the
Surya Veedhi.

Let us say for example in Sravan (As per Sauramana it is Leo) month, let the Arooda be
Kanya (Virgo) Rashi and Pisces is the UDAYAM , Where will be the KAVIPPU?
For Sravan month the soorya veedi is Mesha (Aries). Count from Arooda Rasi Kanya
(Virgo) to Mesha (Aries) it will be 8.
The UDAYAM is Meena (Pisces). COUNT 8 from Meena (Pisces). It will be
TULA(Libra), which becomes the Kavippu.
Editors Notes: To give the rule Count the signs from the Arooda sign to the Surya Veedhi (both
inclusive); count as many signs from the rising or Udayam. The sign thus obtained is therefore known
as Chhatra or Kavippu.
Both the chart format is given and the positions are all given inside the signs.
In the Example given in Lesson 3, the Udayam is Dhanu (Sagittarius) and it is Sravan (Leo)
month hence Soorya Veedi is Mesha (Aries). Suppose the Arooda is Vrishabha (Taurus).
The Soorya veedi is in 12th to Arooda hence 12th from UDAYAM which is Vrishchika
(Scorpio) will become the Kavippu.
Suppose Mesha (Aries) becomes Arooda then Dhanur (Sagittarius) itself will become
Kavippu.
It is easy to remember this Surya Veedi. In the beginning it is better to note down the Surya
Veedi. In the months of Vaishakh, Bhadrapad, Kartik and Phalgun months Surya Veedi
will change. It is enough if we remember this.
We have so far seen three important parts of Saamakkol Arooda which are Arooda, Udaya
and Kavippu. We have also seen how to calculate them.
The rest of the things we will see in the next lessons.
It is better to follow the given below procedure for calculating Udaya:
Write down the Sunrise and Sunset daily. Normally these change every 3 days. Note down
the Tamil month and date also.
For example Sun rise is 6:09. Sun set is 6:18. The intervening period is 12 hours 9 minutes.
That each Udaya will be after 1 hour minutes or 1 hour 1 minute. Let us say that the
Tamil date is 12. 6.09 + 1.01 = 7.10, and subtracting 2 minutes per day for the 12 days we get
6.46. If it is the month of Sravana Simha ends at 6.46. Till 7.47 Kanya, till 8.48 Tula, till 9.49
Vrischika, till 10.50 Dhanur and this can be noted in the chart diagram also. Time will not be
wasted by this method and mistakes also will not happen.

Editors Notes: Since we are now equipped with the latest softwares and Panchangas which give the
position of Sunrise and Sunset on a daily basis. So the above calculation may seem to be superfluous to
some.
Saamakkol Aroodam
Lesson 5
WHAT ALL CAN BE FOUND OUT BY Saamakkol Arooda?
The Matters pertaining to Astrology can be divided into six categories. They are:
Victory or win, Defeat or failure, Gain, Loss, Happiness and sorrow are the items. But
general reply seldom satisfies the clients who expect detailed and specific answers. So it
becomes the duty of the Astrologer to give correct replies so that both the astrologer and
Astrology as a science will become credible in the eyes of people. We have already said that
Saamakkol Aroodam is an excellent system and the list of things that can be said is really
amazing.
1. Direction. 2. Gender (male /female) 3. Singe/double 4. Caste/Religion. 5. Colour 6.
Legs 7. Shape 8. Horned amongst animals 9.Rays of planets (intensity) 10.Distance
11.Age 12. Taste 13. Moles 14. Right/Left 15. Hidden 16. Standing 17. Rotating 18.
Rotating on a stand
19. Walking 20.Flying 21. Sliding/Creeping 22. Meeting
place/Destination 23.Niht/Day 24. Time factor.
Besides this there are three more and they are Dhatu or minerals, Mula or vegetables, and
Jeeva or animals.
Dhatus - Earth, Rocks, Ores, Minerals and Metals.
Moola - Grass, herbs, shrubs, trees (vegetable kingdom and its products)
Jeeva - All insects, Microbes, animals, human beings and life inside water
There are two more sub divisions called as MOOLA DHATU and JEEVA DHATU.
MOOLA DHATU Grass, shrubs, creeping plants which are dead or dried up, if not dead
bark of a tree, flower and roots etc
JEEVA DHATU is either dead animal and their carcass etc and skin, flesh, claws, horn etc
are counted as Living Jeeva Dhatu.
There are few other divisions which we will learn in course of our study.
In the initial stages the student may get bogged by so much information, but it will become
easy with practice like so many other works we do mechanically without thinking but as a
matter of routine.
Let us take the example quoted in lesson 1. The boy has run away because he failed in the
examination. Father wants to know when the boy will come back and the mother wants to
know that he is alive and safe.
From the list given we have to take (1) Direction (10 distance) (22) destination (25) Time
factor and analyse deeply. Then see item (3) also which will tell whether he ran away alone
or with some one else and is at one place or moving around etc can be told.
This is how Saamakkol Aroodam is done.
When I was learning Saamakkol Arooda from my late Guru Sri Kalyana Rama Iyer. An
incident happened which needs to be mentioned here. One evening I had gone to meet him
in a shop. The shop keeper asked him Sir I am thinking of disposing this shop. Can you please
tell be what does the Aroodam say? After remaining silent for about 5-6 minutes my Guruji said
Dispose it, you will get a profit of Rs. 40000/- You are disposing this shop to generate funds for
your Daughters marriage. The Shop will be purchased by a gentleman from a farmer community. He
will open a medical shop here. It will run for six moths after which one sweet shop will be opened
which will run for long. I will not be alive to see all those changes but my disciple (pointing to me)
will see it Things happened exactly as he said and when ever I pass that sweet shop it
reminds me of my Guru deva. After his demise I became disciple of Alliyandal Arunachalam
and an incident connected with him needs to be mentioned here. One day while my self and
my guru were discussing some subjects one gentleman came for Aroodam and asked What
profession will suit me? My guruji moved his hands in the fashion of a coffee hotel server and said
you have already hired a shop for opening coffee hotel. The shop is south facing and in a street full of
jewellers most of whom belong to Chettiyar community. The business will be moderate and income
and expenditure will be equal with not much profit The gentleman is doing his coffee shop for
the past 8 years without much of a profit.
Such amazing predictions were the reasons which forced me to learn this science. I learnt
much from Alliyandal and my prostrations at the feet of my guru. The various Aroodam
methods in practice now are no comparison to this infallible science.
No complicated mathematical procedure is necessary. Within 10 minutes answer can be
given to any question. Taking into account the changing time in society, answers can be
given correctly to many new problems.
In fact it can be clearly stated as to the purpose of the clients visit and the question in his
mind.
