The government cleared a proposal to set up the India Post payments bank
with a corpus of Rs.800 crore and has plans to have 650 branches operational
by September 2017, telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said.
The union cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved an
investment of Rs 3,770 crore for development of the first phase of the
Chennai Metro Rail project.

The Uttar Pradesh (UP) Government on 31 May 2016 approved the Detailed

preparation of DPR for Metrosin Kanpur, Varanasi, Meerut and Agra was assigned to
Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) by state government.
The Direct Tax Dispute Resolution Scheme 2016 came into effect on 1 June
2016. The scheme was incorporated as Chapter X of the Finance Act, 2016. The
declarations under this Scheme may be made on or before the 31 December 2016
in respect of tax arrears & specified tax.
BMW India Financial Services announced a tie up with ICICI Lombard General
Insurance to offer motor insurance for BMW customers.
State Bank of India, the country's largest public sector bank, has launched a
mobile payment solution that will enable customers to make digital
payments at ofline stores by scanning a QR (quick response) code on
their smartphones. The service has been launched in Bengaluru with a sizable
number of merchants and will soon expand into other cities. Dubbed mVisa, the
solution is a card-less way for customers to pay for goods at offline stores, and will
be available to all SBI credit card, debit card and net banking users. The solution
which is bank agnostic will be accessible to customers through the company's SBI
Anywhere app.
New Development Bank (NDB), headed by K V Kamath, has chosen ICICI Bank,
which he used to head, for its first tie-up with any bank in India to explore
opportunities around bond issuances, co-financing, treasury management and
human resources.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has retained its growth forecast for
India this year at 7.5%, largely driven by private consumption even as weak
exports and sluggish credit growth weigh on the economy.
State-run Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) announced the commissioning

Union inter-ministerial Board of Approval (BoA) on 28 April 2016 approved the
proposal of Infosys to set up an IT/ITeS special economic zone (SEZ) in
Bengaluru in an area spread over 4 hectares.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 28 April 2016 released consultation paper on
Peer to Peer (P2P) lending to classify it as Non-Banking Financial Company
(NBFC). The suggestions or comments on the Paper may be sent to Department of

of Commerce & Industry permitted 100% foreign direct investment (FDI) into
asset reconstruction companies (ARCs) through automatic route.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 9 May 2016 announced that it will shortly
issue 1000 rupees denomination banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi Series
2005 with the inset letter 'R' in both the number panels. The banknotes of
1000 rupees banknotes will have six angular bleed lines in four sets of
1-2-2-1 lines on the obverse in both, the upper left and right hand edge of the
banknotes. These will facilitate identification of these notes by visually impaired
persons. The existing identification mark (diamond shape in 1000 rupees) near the
left edge of the banknote has been enlarged.
India and Mauritius on 10 May 2016 signed a protocol on taxation at Port
Louis, Mauritius. The protocol provides for amending the convention for the
avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to

The board of World Bank has approved a $625 million loan to support the
central governments programme to generate electricity from rooftop

The Union Government on 17 May 2016 constituted a five member committee to

NPCI on April 11 launched next generation online payments solution - Unified
Payments Interface (UPI) which will leverage trends such as increasing
smartphone adoption and deeper penetration of mobile data. UPI is a
channel that powers multiple bank accounts into a single mobile application (of
any bank) of a participating bank, merging several banking features, seamless
fund routing and merchant payments
into one hood. It will empower users to perform instant push and pull transactions
and transform the way people make payments today.
Country's largest service provider Bharti Airtel said its mobile commerce subsidiary,
Airtel M Commerce Services, had received payments bank license from the
Reserve Bank of India. In February this year, Kotak Mahindra Bank signed an
agreement to pick 19.9 per cent stake for Rs 98.38 crore in Airtel M Commerce

Axis Bank, Indias third largest private sector lender has reduced its key lending

Union Road, Transport and Highways and Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari

in port related matters and their developments.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between MicroSave and
NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) to initiate collaboration to
support the Jan Dhan Yojana, boost digital transactions and to accelerate creation
of less-cash economy in India through RuPay, IMPS, AePS and UPI. NPCI will be

India was the world's largest remittance recipient in 2015 despite
experiencing a $1 billion drop from the previous year, the first decline in its
remittances since 2009, the World Bank has said. India retained its top spot in
2015, attracting about $69 billion in remittances, down from $70 billion in 2014, the
World Bank said in its annual report 'Migration and Development Brief'.
Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) on 14 April 2016 took over

Union government on 22 April 2016 constituted the inter-ministerial panel to
prepare a blueprint for doubling farmers' income by 2022. The government's
decision to set up the panel follows the budget announcement that set a target of
doubling farm incomes by 2022. The panel will be headed by Ashok Dalwai,

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 1 will launch Rs. 8,000 crore scheme
to provide 5 crore free LPG connections to Below Poverty Line (BPL)
families using the money saved from 1.13 crore cooking gas users voluntarily
giving up their subsidies. The scheme is called Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana
and Mr. Modi will be launching it on May 1 at Ballia in Uttar Pradesh and Dahod in
Gujarat on May 15.
Owing to poor performance of developers, the Union Road Transport and
Highways Ministry has taken a decision to terminate three highway
projects worth over Rs. 3,000 crore. The projects are Rargaon- Jamshedpur
(Rs. 1,650 crore) in Jharkhand, Rohtak-Jind (Rs. 410 crore) in Haryana and
