Danielle McEwan Takes Top Seed for PWBA Wichita Open

WICHITA, Kansas Danielle
McEwan of Stony Point, N.Y., was
a slow starter during qualifying at
the 2016 Professional Womens
Bowling Association Wichita Open,
but had no trouble in match play to
earn the top seed at Northrock
Lanes.
McEwan averaged more than 257
during match play to claim the No. 1
seed for the TV finals, which will be
taped June 26 at The Ashwaubenon
Bowling Alley in Green Bay,
Wisconsin, and air Tuesday, July 5
on CBS Sports Network.
McEwan opened match play with
games of 279, 268 and 276 for an
823 series, the first 800 series rolled
by a PWBA player since the relaunch of the tour in 2015. The 24year-old right-hander followed with
276, 233 and 211 for a six-game
total of 1,543.
McEwan, coming off a third-place
finish at the 2016 United States
Bowling Congress Queens, notched
a 4-2 match-play record in the
Group B standings for a 5,590 pinfall total, which included 30 pins for
each victory.
This is the first time Ive ever
done something like that, said
McEwan, who is a five-time Team
USA member. I dont really shoot
high games or high series or have
big sets like that. Im more of a

grinder who doesnt give away pins,

who will occasionally pop a big
game. Thats usually my strength. I
dont even have words to describe
what was going through my head
because I was in such shock. I was
just bowling.
The competition began with the
32 cashers bowling a six-game
block to determine the top 12 players for round-robin match play.
While Cassandra Leuthold of
Lincoln, Nebraska, had the high
pinfall total during the final qualifying round in the morning with
1,357, McEwan fired a 753 set in
her final three games to take the No.
12 seed.
I definitely thought I was out of
the tournament three or four times,
said McEwan, who won 2015 The
Smithfield
PWBA
Tour
Championship. The three qualifying blocks were the same for me
because I went minus for the first
three. Then, I went plus 100 or more
during the back three. I had confidence in myself that I was going to
figure it out and shoot a big last set.
I went with a great ball suggestion
that was perfect and I just went with
it from there.
Colombia native Maria Jose
Rodriguez led Group A with a 5,480
pinfall total on the strength of a 4-2
match-play record to claim the No.

2 seed, and a guaranteed spot on the

televised show. Shannon Pluhowsky
of Dayton, Ohio, and Malaysias
Syaidatul Hamidi, advanced
through the dual group stepladder
finals as the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds.
In the Group A stepladder,
Latvias Diana Zavjalova defeated
Amanda Greene of Romney, West
Virginia, 246-224.
In the final match, with her Team
Malaysia teammates looking on,
Hamidi tossed 12 consecutive
strikes for a 300 game to down
Zavjalova, 300-209.
I feel very satisfied with my
game and all my hard work is paying off, said Hamidi. It was hard,
but I was able to keep repeating
shots. Im very satisfied and didnt
expect at all to be in the final.
In the Group B stepladder, Li Jane
Sin, a teammate of Hamidi, defeated
Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., 238163.
In the final match, Pluhowsky had
her own run at perfection, starting
with six consecutive strikes and
rolled to a 276-228 win over Sin.
The match-play finalists were split
into two six-player groups. Each
group bowled six games of match
play, including a final position
round, to determine the top seeds
and advancers to each group
stepladder final.

Weber
Continued from Page 1
I could see it was tough for
Harry to get anything going and
when he didnt strike in the ninth I
knew I had the match, Weber
said.
For Weber, who ranks fifth on
the all-time PBA Tour titles list
with 37 wins and has won a
record-tying 10 PBA Tour majors,
he ranked his win among his top
accomplishments in a professional
career that spans more than three
decades.
Its way up there as far as anything Ive done in my career, said
the 53-year-old Weber. I just do
whatever I can do to win and thats
the way it has been my entire
career. Like Ive said many times,
winning never gets old.
Weber began the 2016 season
with a fourth-place finish in the
Pasco County Florida Open and
then won the UnitedHealthcare
Sun Bowl In The Villages, PBA50
Mooresville Ford Open and
Johnny Petraglia BVL Open prior

to winning the Senior U.S. Open.

In the semi-final match, Sullins,
who was recently inducted into the
USBC Hall of Fame, defeated
Brian Kretzer of Dayton, Ohio,
making his PBA50 Tour debut,
193-164 to advance to the final
match. Sullins was trying for his
fourth PBA50 Tour win and second major having won the 2009
PBA Senior World Championship.
In the opening match, Sullins
defeated PBA Hall of Famer
Amleto Monacelli of Venezuela,
212-207, to advance to the semifinal. Monacelli, who won the
Senior U.S. Open in 2012 and
2013, was trying to become the
tournaments first three-time winner.
Weber joined Monacelli, Baker
and Wayne Webb as a two-time
Senior U.S. Open winner, all of
whom have won in successive
years. Baker won his back to back
in 2005 and 2006, and Webb in
2008 and 2009.

Sally Lauderdale Posts First 700 Series

By Joan Taylor
In these days of taking high scores for granted, it
is nice to talk with someone who shot her first 700
series. Such is the case of Sally Lauderdale, who
posted exactly 700 on games of 205, 257 and 238 at
Hanover Lanes in the Wednesday Night Trio
League. She admitted to being nervous, especially
when some man came over and told me I needed a
238 (game) to hit 700. I am such a choker, so I was
nervous. But that night things felt right. It was just
one of those great nights.
She bested her previous high sanctioned series of
654 on her 183 average. Sally used a Storm
Optimus purchased at Pro Image Pro Shop and fitted by Ken Yokobosky. This was a new ball, purchased earlier in the season.
Sally is a substitute middle school teacher in

husband, John, and the couple has three children:
Colin, 21, Devon, 18 and Bennett, 16.
Her bowling goal is to continually learn and
improve, especially, for example, because she hasnt been using a fingertip grip for very long. This
brings us to the rest of the story: Sally dedicated
her achievement to a fellow league bowler, Andrew
Stephens. He told me to go to Ken (Yokobosky)
and met me at the pro shop. He has been a positive
influence on my bowling. He is always positive and
an all-around great guy. Congratulations, Sally!
This writer remembers seeing someone going for
a 700 series many years ago, this at Rockaway
Lanes, and we gathered around to watch him
pound the pocket for one of his many 700s. His
name was Doc Russano.

USBC Queens, Senior Queens

Set for Baton Rouge in 2017
ARLINGTON, Texas The 2017 United States Bowling Congress
Queens and Senior Queens will be held in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, taking place in the same custom facility that will play host to the 2017
USBC Womens Championships.
The 2017 USBC Queens and Senior Queens will take place concurrently from May 17-23 at the Baton Rouge River Center, the site for the
2017 Womens Championships. The Queens is a major event on the
Professional Womens Bowling Association Tour.
Baton Rouge hosted the 1993 Womens Championships and to the
USBC Open Championships in 2005 and 2012.
We want to continue to keep the Queens and Senior Queens in the
same host city as the Womens Championships, so bowlers are able to
compete in these outstanding events in one trip, said USBC Executive
Director Chad Murphy.
The 2016 Queens, Senior Queens and Womens Championships will
take place in Las Vegas. Liz Johnson is the defending Queens champion, and Robin Romeo is the two-time defending champion at the Senior
Queens.
The Queens started in 1961 and has taken place alongside the
Womens Championships for most of its history. Both the Queens and
Senior Queens feature a 15-game qualifying format, before the field is
cut for the double-elimination match-play bracket.

Robert (Bob) Bellew, one of the

founding members of the PBA in
1958, died in Leesburg, Florida,
on June 7. He was 86.
Born in Owensboro, Kentucky, in
1930, the 6-foot-2 Bellew was the
manager and later owner of
King Pin Lanes in Henderson,
Kentucky.

By John Jennings
HOWELL, NJ - In the Hankel Classic, Anthony Gubitosi Jr. started with
a 290 High Game of the Night and a 203 and 233 for High series of the
Hankel League 726. Two more 700s were fired by Gary Toth 723, and
Ryan Briehof 716 including a 279 game. Mike Fogarty 268, Michael
Blum 267, and Kevin Lagravenis 267. Leslie Bohn bowled a 630 including a 220 game.
Bowler of the month as usual was really competitive with several top
bowlers cracking 220 plus average for the month. In the spirit of ensuring a new bowler each month, the top four were Michael Blum, Joe
Musolino, Mike Valanzano, and Chris Nicholsen. Mike Valanzano had
two 700 series and high total pinfall to edge out the others. Joe Musolino
had a 289 and a 699 series and five of 12 games 225 or better. His stellar lead-off performance really tightened up the League standings and
paced Howell lanes to a 9-0 sweep.
