    Ozone is a gas composed of three oxygen atoms that is found naturally in the atmosphere between 20-30km above the ground, forming an ozone layer. It is also produced at ground level from sunlight interacting with nitrogen oxides from vehicle emissions, which can cause smog. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun can damage DNA in living cells, but the skin produces melanin pigment in response, which absorbs UV light as a defense mechanism to prevent damage to cells deep in the skin.

    Ozone is a gas. There are three oxygen atoms in a
    molecule of ozone.
    The molecular formula is O3.

    Ozone is formed from oxygen, when sunlight interacts
    with nitrogen oxides from vehicle fumes.
    This ozone may be in the form of smog.
    High levels of ozone near the ground is not good for
    us.
    Between 20 30km from the ground there is an area
    where high concentration of ozone occurs
    naturally.
    It is called the ozone layer.

    Ultraviolet light damages cells
    Ultraviolet radiation from the Sun can damage DNA
    inside living cells.
    The ultraviolet radiation causes the skin to produce
    extra melanin.
    Melanin is a dark pigment. It absorbs UV light before
    it can penetrate the cells deep in your skin.
    It is a defence mechanism used by the skin to stop
    damage to your DNA.
