Sunbathing (a national hobby), tanning, personal
assumptions of Being SunSmart, skin cancer

As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:
Compare four images of Beauty Across Cultures on interactive whiteboard.
Discuss information covered in lesson with whole class.
Analyse given information from videos and written text to answer set questions in Student Health Work Book.
Teachers Prior Preparation/Organisation:
Observation of prior Health lessons
Liaise with Mentor approximately 2 days before
scheduled lesson to allow for editing and improvement
of lesson plan if necessary.
Students have personal Health Work Book.
Teacher has Teachers copy (with answers) of Student

YouTube video Comfortable: 50 People 1 Question (4:13mins) is played on


interactive whiteboard.
Key Questions:
How did the adults see themselves?
How did the children see themselves?
How did the adults perception of themselves differ from the childrens
perspective of themselves? Why?
Transition How people see themselves = Body image

9:10am

Students open to page 60: Teacher/students to read What is Body Image? and
Genetics paragraphs and discuss.
Students look to Celebrate our Differences Activity and cross out instructions
(change word similar to different) Teacher to re-write question on interactive
board.


Task:
Students to draw two lines (one vertical and one horizontal) to make four
boxes.
At top of box students write Image 1, Image 2 .
Teacher to draw example of table on interactive whiteboard (Appendix 1)
Students to look at four images on interactive white board and compare
each discussing each cultures idea of the perfect body image.

Teacher and students work through page reading text and highlighting important
information.
When teacher comes to Some ways to actively improve your self-esteem are:
teacher will stop at each dot point and discuss ways students can do this in daily
life.

Students participate in Positivity Squares activity: (Appendix 2)


Task:
Each student to receive two coloured squares on labelled Something I love
about myself and the other Something I love about someone else
On the Something I love about myself students will write one or two things
they like about themselves or something they are grateful for in their life.
On the Something I love about someone else students will choose a friend
they dont normally talk to in the class and write a nice message to them.
Teacher to stress students are NOT to choose their best friend.

Lesson Closure:
Students to keep their Something I love about myself message in diary or
where students choose and give their positive message to a friend at recess.

Transition:
Students put away Health books and get ready for lessons 2-4.

Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?)
Objective 1:
Compare four images of Beauty Across Cultures on interactive
whiteboard.
To meet objective, students will participate in Beauty Across Cultures activity by
comparing four images on interactive whiteboard and discussing their
differences/similarities. Objective to be judged though completion of activity and
collection of health books at end of semester to be checked by teacher.
Objective 2:
Discuss information covered in lesson with whole class.
To meet objective, students will participate in class discussion giving personal
assumptions and opinion as well as accurate text information to the best of their
ability. Objective to be judged through verbal assessment.
Objective 3:
Analyse given information from videos and written text to answer set
questions in Student Health Work Book.
To meet objective, students will answer all set questions from pages 57-59
accurately. Objective to be judged by collection and assessment of written
questions in Health Work Book.
