Philippines
Basilica Minore de San Sebastin is the only all-steel church in Asia and the
only prefabricated steel church in the world. Completed in 1891, the basilica
is constructed in the Gothic revival style and is considered to be one of the
best examples of this architectural type in the Philippines. The pre-fabricated
steel sections of the church were produced in Binche, Belgium and
transported by water to Manila. After connecting the parts, the walls were
filled with mixed sand, gravel and cement.
Although the popular culture mentions Gustave Eiffel as one of the architects
of this Basilica, there are no records to prove this. The only known architect
of Basilica of San Sebastian is Genaro Palacios.
Brooklyn Bridge
called the "Blue Grotto" because of a shrine to the Virgin Mary next to an
opening at the entrance. When New York visited one of the cellars about 102
years later, in 1978, it discovered, on the wall, a "fading inscription" reading:
"Who loveth not wine, women and song, he remaineth a fool his whole life
long."
Seagram Building
Structure
The 38-story structure combines a steel moment frame and a steel and reinforced
concrete core for lateral stiffness. The concrete core shear walls extend up to the 17th
floor, and diagonal core bracing (shear trusses) extends to the 29th floor.[15]
According to Severud Associates, the structural engineering consultants, it was the first
tall building to use high strength bolted connections, the first tall building to combine a
braced frame with a moment frame, one of the first tall buildings to use a vertical truss
bracing system and the first tall building to employ a composite steel and concrete
lateral frame.
