TheUnitedStatesandthePhilippineshadshorttermandlongtermeffectsbetweenthe
twonations.TheUnitedStatesandthePhilippinesknowneachothersince1898,whichbetween
thetwotheyhadalovehaterelationship.TheUnitedStatesandPhilippinesshorttermeffect
waswhentheyhadawarbetweeneachotherduringtheAmericanWar.TheUnitedStatesand
thePhilippinesdidnotlikeoneanotherininthepastwhereitendedupturningintoviolence
however,theirlongtermeffectiswhentheybecamestrongallieshelpingeachotherwiththeir
needs.Theyendedupbuildingaspecialrelationshipwitheachotherinthefuturecausingthem
tohaveaspecialbondwithoneanother.Ittooktimeforthemtobecomeveryclosefriendsafter
theUnitedStatesandthePhilippinessignedthetreaty(TIFA)butithashappenedandthey
becameclose.
TheUnitedStatesandthePhilippinesmetduringtheAmericanWarduringthe1898andwere
notongoodtermswitheachotherbecausetheUnitedStatestriedtotakeoverthePhilippines
land,whichthePhilippinestriedtofightfor.ThePhilippineswantedtofightforindependenceas
wellduringtheAmericanWaragainstalotofothernationswithinthewar.TheAmericanWar
hasstartedin1898,buttheUnitedStatesandthePhilippinesstartedhavingawarfrom1899to
1902.Thewarbetweenthemlastedfor3yearsandtherulerforthePhilippineswasnamed
EmilioAguinaldowhowasfightingfortheindependencewhiletheUnitedStatesrulerwas
namedTheodoreRooseveltwhowantedtheUnitedStatestobecomesuperior.Whenthesetwo
nationsmetAmericanstriedtotakeoverthelandofthePhilippines,whichtheFilipinodidnot
appreciatesotheytookintoconsiderationtofightbacktokeepwhattheyhave.Makingupthe
hatredthesetwonationshadforeachotherwhentheyfirstmetbecauseofhowdifferentthey
werefromeachother.Forexample,onawebsitecalledNPR,itstates,PatricioAbinales,who

grewupinthePhilippines,tellsStevethatInskeephiscountryslovehaterelationshipwiththe
UnitedStatesbeganinthelate19thcenturyafterAmericaPurchasedtheislandfromSpain.As
statedbyPatriciothetwocountrieshavealwaysbeenongoodtermsandbadterms.Ifitwasnt
fortheUnitedStatestryingtotakeoverPhilippines(imperialism)thanthetwonationswould
haveneverfoughtintheAmericanWarandforthewartoescalatetoviolent.Althoughthey
havefoughtfor3yearswitheachother,theyalsobeengoodallieswitheachother.
TheUnitedStatesandPhilippines(AmericansandFilipinos)hasbeenknowntohaveaspecial
relationshipbetweeneachother.TheystartedbecomingalliesaroundFebruaryof1990andhave
beenhelpingeachotherwithneedsthatwerenecessarytothatcountry.Thereasonwhythese
twocountriesbecamealliesisbecausetheycametoanagreementonthe(TIFA)Tradeand
InvestmentFrameworkAgreementthathasbeensignedbythebothoftheminNovember1989.
Thiswastheirstartthanayearlater,theybecamecloseallies.Forexample,fromtheUnited
StatesDepartmentofState,statesthatTheUnitedStatesgovernmentgoalinthePhilippinesis
topartnerwiththecountrytobecomeastableandprosperousnation.Meaningthatthetwo
nationsneedeachothertobecomeasuccessfulnationasawholebetweentheUnitedStatesand
thePhilippines.Anotherexampleiswhenaresourcestated,RelationshipbetweentheUnited
StatesandthePhilippinesarestrong,historicallyclose,andextremelyfriendly,andhasalsobeen
describedasaspecialrelationship.ProvingthatthealliancebetweentheAmericansandFilipinos
ismorethanjusthelpingeachotherout.Theycamefromaviolencebackgroundwitheachother
toactuallybecomingallieswitheachother.Thisiswhytherelationshipbetweenthemiscalleda
SpecialRelationshipbecausemostcountriescannotcometoanagreementafterhavingawar
betweeneachother.Everysince1990,theUnitedStatesbeencloseallieswiththePhilippines

eversince.Thetwonationsstartedtobecomeverybeneficialtoeachotherwhenhelpingeach
other.
TheUnitedStatesandthePhilippinesbecamebeneficialtowardseachotherbyhelpingeach
otherwitheconomics,helptradinggoods,andalsohavingsimilarorganizations.TheUnited
StateshelpedthePhilippineswitheconomicsbecausethePhilippineswasinneedofmoney
sincetheirsystemhascrasheddownandtheywouldnotbeabletogetwhattheyneedwithout
money.TheUnitedStatesdiditoutofcourtesyandtoalsohelpedthembecomebetterasa
whole.Forexample,TheUnitedStatesDepartmentofStatestates,TheUnitedStateshas
providedoveronehundredandfortythreedollarsinassistancetodatetothepeopleofthe
Philippinesinreliefandrecoveryin2013.TheUnitedStatesgavethePhilippinesenough
moneythattheycansurvivefrombecausetheUnitedStatesdidnotwantthePhilippinesto
sufferasmuchwhenitcametoeconomics.Also,sincetheUnitedStateshadthemoneythey
decidedtogiveittothenationthatneedsitthemost,whichinthiscasewasthePhilippines.
AnotherexamplefromtheUnitedStatesDepartmentofStatestates,TheUnitedStatesandthe
Philippineshaveastrongtradeandinvestmentrelationship,withover25billioningoodsand
servicetreated.ThePhilippinestradeswiththeUnitedStatesallthetimeifthesetwonations
areinneedofanygoods.AmericansandFilipinoshaveaverystrongtradingbondthatwouldbe
hardtobreakbetweenthemandthattheyhavealotofgoodstotradewitheachotherwith.If
thesetwocountriesdidnothaveeachother,oneprobablywouldnotmakeitasfarasanother
would.TheUnitedStatesneedthePhilippinesforthehigherpercentageofthepopulationwhile
thePhilippinesneedstheUnitedStatesforthegoodeconomicsystemtheyhaveandgoodsthat
theyhave.Theyareverybeneficialtoeachother.

Inconclusion,UnitedStatesandthePhilippineswasenemiesinthebeginningoftheirjourney
whereonewouldfightforlandandtheotherwouldfightforindependencehowever,they
becamegreatallieswitheachotherwheretheywouldhelpeachothereconomically,helpeach
otherwithgoodsduringtradeandalsohelpeachothernationouttobecomestableand
prosperous.Theybothwantedtobecomesuccessfulsotheyendeduphavingtocooperate
togethertohelpeachotherbecomesuccessful.
