Slide One : Prehistory (pages 4-5 of textbook)

Venus of Willendorf
Dun Horse, Lascuax France
Slide Two : Ancient Greece - Golden Age (page 73 of textbook)
The Parthenon with Formal Analysis
WHAT, WHO, STYLE, WHERE, WHEN, SHAPE (Dimensions)
This is the info that most people would/could readily know.
Contextual Analysis
Created in the Golden Age of Athens during the reign of the great statesman Pericles. Built with money donated by the
Delian League (not what the money was intended for). Shows the greatness of Athens during this period.
Built to the goddess Athena (Nike). Originally contained a huge sculpture of the goddess by the architect Phidias.
Brief example we will work on discovering more than this!
For the rest of the slides I will present only the formal. Our work tomorrow will be the contextual.
Slide Three : Roman Empire - Pax Romana Period (page 109 of textbook)
Augsutus of Prima Porta. First emperor (Caesar) of the Roman Empire. Done at the start of the Pax Romana period.
Slide Four : Middle Ages (not in textbook!)
Chartres Cathedral : Late Middle Ages, Gothic Style Cathedral. Built to bring people into the city (Medieval Tourist
Attraction)
Slide Five : Italian Renaissance (page 333 of textbook)
The Mona Lisa. Perhaps the best known painting in the entire world. By Leonardo da Vinci one of the great masters of the
High Renaissance
Slide 6 : Northern Renaissance (page 361 of textbook)
Garden of Earthly Delights, a triptych by Bosch. One crazy series of paintings!
Slide Seven : The Baroque Period (page 392 of textbook)
Ecstasy of St. Teresa by Bernini. DAMN could that man sculpt! For my money better than Michelangelo & perhaps the
greatest EVER
Slide Eight : Neoclassical Period (page 476 of textbook)
Monticello by Thomas Jefferson, beautiful BUT modest!!

Slide Nine : Romantic Period (not in textbook)

Joseph M. W. Turner Was Britains wonderboy painter in his early years, fell out of favor & is now one of the accepted
GREAT English artists of all times.
This is one of my personal favorite paintings of course so is Garden of Earthly Delights, what is this saying about me??
Seems to be Impressionistic BUT 30 years before Impressionism
Slide Ten : Post Impressionism (page 548 of textbook)
A huge canvas (69 by 101) that he started on & then completely redid in a style I could only do for 10 minutes before
going crazy!
The fact that it is Chicago drives the French angry above most reason (they hated Impressionism & Post Impressionism
when they styles were first introduced!)
Slide Eleven : Surrealism (page 582 of textbook)
Wow, Dali, what a freak. Avail yourself of the museum in St. Pete if you have not. This is his most famous work. Note the
size!
Slide Twelve : Abstract Expressionism, Late Modernism
Many people feel different ways about Rothko. He wanted his paintings to illicit an emotional response SO if you hate
this painting or feel violent towards it, Rothko would be Ok with that!
I will say that his work are more meaningful in person. A book or poster does NOT do them justice
(& yes, one of my favorite artists. I named my cat after him!)
