As you like it Shakespeare

In the beginning of the play the first scene from the first act shows us Orlando who is
complaining about his brothers failure to give him the proper education that suits his place in
society as a gentleman. When his older brother, Oliver comes out to speak with Orlando they
fight and quarrel. Oliver strikes Orlando, and Orlando grabs him by the throat, and Adam an
old servant of the family steps between them. Orlando asks from Oliver the opportunity to
live as a gentleman or the right to his inheritance. Oliver wants to get rid of Orlando and keep
the fortune so he tries to make his brother fight the Dukes expert wrestler, Charles, at court.
Oliver talks to Charles and tells him that his brother is stubborn and need to be beaten in the
match.
During the second scene of the first act at the Dukes palace Celia tells her cousin
Rosalind not to be sad about her father who has been banished. To take their minds off their
problems, Rosalind suggests they play a game of love. Meanwhile, a courtier, LeBeau arrives
with news of the wrestling match at the court and that Charles cracked the ribs of three
brothers, and another match is about to begin soon. Celias father Duke Frederick and
Rosalinds uncle asks the girls to keep the young Orlando from fighting, but he is determined
to do it so the girls wish him success.
In the match Orlando throws Charles and he became unable to speak, and the Duke is
impressed with him until he finds out he is the youngest son of Rowland de Boys , his enemy.
Rosalind gives him a chain to wear and Orlando is charmed by her. LeBeau tells Orlando to
leave the court as the Duke become angry, Orlando asks about the girls and learns that
Rosalind is the daughter of the Duke. He wants to return home but his mind is thinking about
Rosalind.
At the palace the girls talk about how Rosalind fell in love so quickly with Orlando
and just then Duke Frederick walks in and orders Rosalind to leave the court. When the girl
asks for reasons , the Duke answers that he no longer trusts her and that she might be a traitor
like her father. Celia loves Rosalind and doesnt want to live in the court without her and
proposes that they should go find her uncle, in the Forest of Arden. Rosalind wants to
disguise herself as a soldier to avoid danger. The girls choose new names to reflect their
changed natures. Rosalind will now be Ganymede, and Celia will be Aliena. Rosalind decides
to also take the Clown with them as a companion.
In the second act Duke Senior in the forest of Arden is happy with the simplicity of
their new way of life free from intrigues of the court. He is sorry that they must kill animals
in order to eat. Jaques, a lord, is saddened by the death of a deer and thinks about how badly
they are treating the animals.
At the palace Celia and Rosalind are missing and Frederick sends for Orlandos
brother to make him help in the search.

Orlando is returning to his home when he is warned by Adam not to trust his brother ,
and the servant gives Orlando his savings and wants to serve the younger man. Orlando is
touched by his loyalty.
Rosalind and Celia together with Touchstone are wandering in the forest, exhausted.
Two shepherds talk about love passing by , remanding Rosalind of her own love. Girls ask if
there is any shelter or food in the area and they go to a cottage that is for sale.
In another part of the forest Amiens sings a sad song and Jaques tells him to keep
singing.
Duke Senior is looking for Jaques and he appears happy that he met a fool who spoke
with great wisdom about fortune and mans life.
Orlando then arrives upon them demanding food and Duke Senior invites him to eat.
Later he realizes that Orlando is the son of Sir Rowland and wants to know what misfortune
brought him there.
At the palace Duke Frederick banishes Oliver and seizes his fortune and lands.
Orlando hangs verses written in praise of Rosalind on the trees. Rosalind reads a few
of them and wants to meet Orlando but she is disguised as a man. Rosalind wants to tease
Orlando and use her disguise to speak with him. She tells the man that she can cure him of
love if he will call her Rosalind and come to the cottage to woo her.
Rosalind and Celia wait on Orlando who fails to meet them, Rosalind thinks he is a
true lover and Celia criticizes him. Corin then invites the girls to see his friend wooing his
mistress.
Silvius tells Phebe not to be harsh with him and the girl tells him that love cannot hurt
a person and she has no pity for him. Phebe falls in love with Rosalind and wants to give her
a letter through Silvius.
Rosalind meets Jaques in the forest and wonders why he is so melancholy. Orlando
arrives late and agrees to woo Rosalind. He says he would die if Rosalind did not love him
and the girl tells him that there are no such cases. She wants Celia to marry the two of them
in a mock wedding.
Silvius brings the note to Rosalind from Phebe and she wants from Phebe to love
Silvius to be able to receive her love.
Oliver comes looking for his brother and is encountered by a snake and then a lion ,
Orlando saves him and the brothers reconcile.
Oliver and Celia then fall in love and decide to get married but Orlando wants to meet
his love too. Rosalind tells him that he would also find his.

In the end everyone meets together in the forest. The god of marriage comes and all
the couples agree to marry. Jaques de Boys tells them that Duke Frederick returned the throne
to Duke Senior. The play ends with dancing and a speech by Rosalind that the audience
applauds the play according to how much they loved the ladies or the men.
