in Schoology.
Choose four of the below to complete.
1. What do Melbas remarks about feeling both proud and sad while being escorted into the
school by federal troops indicate about her sense of herself as an individual and a citizen?
(reference page 132)
2.
What does Melba mean when she writes that integration is a much bigger word than I
thought? Consider the ways that various characters and groups in the text define the word.
(reference page 154)
3. Explain why desegregating Central High School was not as simple as white people versus
black people. Be sure to explain the stances that various groups and leaders had on the issue.
Give text evidence to support your answer, include page numbers.
Desegregating Central High School was not as simple as white people versus black
people because of the fact that many were afraid of the change whether it was financially,
emotionally, or politically. On our first day at Central High, Governor Faubus dispatched guntoting Arkansas National Guard soldiers to prevent us from entering. (1). This shows that it
wasnt just a matter of a change in education but it was something that not even political men
wanted. To uphold the law and protect lives, President Eisenhower sent soldiers of the 101st
Airborne Division, the elite Screaming Eagles- Korean War heroes. (2). There was ongoing of
politics taking action with this movement, some made movements with anger and
disappointment not measuring the amount of damage this would do to not just the whites but the
blacks too. Melba and her family all tried to make a movement with godsguidance, Youre
not gonna let white people make you nervous, are you? Theyre the same as us, Gods children.
(42). Religion took on a big part of this designation act.
4. Some argue that the NAACP simply used Melba and the other Little Rock Nine to try to
force integration. Given that Melba was not yet an adult, do you think that she had the ability to
make the choice for herself to be a member of the integration team? Give text evidence that
supports your stance, include page numbers.
Melba had already made the decision that she wanted to do this integration into Central
High. It was her family that made her accomplish it as an act of completing a promise to God.
In January 1956, my hopes were dashed when NAACP officials tried to register a few of our
children in several white high schools in Little Rock and were turned back. (29). Melba is

showing how she had a good intake of wanting to do this, not just for herself but for all of her
people.
5. Does Melba do an effective job of telling us her story and convincing us that integration was
worth the struggle she went through? If you answer yes, give examples of how she builds her
ethos (her credibility) from the text as well as how she appeals to pathos to make the reader care
about her story. If you dont believe she effectively convinces the reader, explain why and give
text evidence as well.
Yes, Melba did do an effective job on telling is her story and convincing us that
integration was worth the struggle she went through because she suffered pain and tears along
that. She also give us pieces of real information that was given out during that time, BOARD
SEEKS 3-YEAR DELAY IN INTEGRATION- Arkansas Gazette, Thursday, May 8, 1958
(292). Yet even as I wince at the terrible risk we all took, I remember thinking at the time that it
was the right decision- because it felt as though the hand of fate was ushering us forward.(309).
She gave personal issues and feelings and I dont think a person can ever hide their own feelings
or their inner self.
6. What is the biggest lesson from telling her story that Melba wants the reader to understand?
Use text evidence, but dont restate her words without your analysis. Do you agree or disagree
with her? Explain.
The biggest lesson that Melba learned was that one should always follow their dreams.
