Objectives:

Students will be able to:


read to the short story Amy and her Dream.
answer the comprehension questions written in this
document
think critically and creatively while analyzing the ideas
mentioned in the story to answer the questions.
The audience:
Students aged between 9 and 12 years old.
N.B: It depends on how familiar and good they are in critical thinking.

Procedure:
o The teacher reads aloud the short story and makes sure to
explain the new vocabulary words that this story contains.
o The teacher then asks (not critical) questions regarding the
story she read; for example, who are the characters in the
story? State the setting of the story. What are the main ideas
mentioned in the story? What happened when Amys
followed the light?...
Here, the teacher can evaluate students understanding
through their face-and-body gestures, their questions that they
ask to inform about a certain aspect of the story, and their
answers to the questions that the teacher asks.
- Throughout the first activity, the teacher can explain the
elements of a story and highlight the fact that the verbs are
written using the past tense. The teacher can also ask the
students to list some of the nouns or adjectives mentioned in
the story depending on what grammar rules the students
have taken so far.

o After the discussion is over, the teacher can ask the


students some critical questions to evoke their critical
reading and thinking skills.
Here, the teacher can evaluate the students according the use of
critical thinking (making inferences) and creative thinking (the
way they use their imagination to continue the events of the
story).
Example of some critical questions:
- In your opinion why did she want to go back to sleep?
- Describe Amys character by analyzing how and why she
acted like that.
- In your opinion, why did she love that harp tree and why
does she call it by that name?
o After that, the teacher can ask the students to make their
own story using the online tool Story Bird.
