Problem Set 1 (Stress)
1. A rod made of timber is rigidly attached between a steel rod and a concrete rod.
Axial loads are applied at the positions indicated. Find the maximum value of P that
will not exceed the maximum allowable stress in each material.
2. The assembly consists of three disks
and that are used to support the
load of
. Determine the smallest diameter
of the top disk, the
diameter
within the support space, and the diameter of the hole in the
)
bottom disk. The allowable bearing stress for the material is (
and allowable shear stress is
.
Problem 1
3. A load P is supported as shown by a steel pin that has been inserted in a short wooden member
hanging from the ceiling. The ultimate strength of the wood used is 60 MPa in tension and 7.5
MPa in shear, while the ultimate strength of the steel is 145 MPa in shear. Knowing that the
load is P = 20 kN, determine (a) the factor of safety for the pin (b) the required values of b and c
if the factor of safety for the wooden member is the same as that found in part (a) for the pin.

Problem 3

4. The lap joint is fastened by four - -diameter

rivets. Calculate the maximum safe load
that
can be applied if the shearing stress in the rivets is
limited to
, the bearing stress in the plates
is limited to
, and the tensile stress in the
plates is limited to
. Assume the applied
load is uniformly distributed among the four
rivets.

5. A triple-riveted lap joint unites two 12-mm plates. The

rivets are 25 mm in diameter and are spaced 150 mm
in the outer rows and 75 mm in the inner row. When
the tensile stress is 100 MPa in the gross section of the
plate, determine; (a) the average intensity of the
shearing stress in the rivets; (b) the average bearing
stress on the plates; (c) the highest average tensile
stress, and state where it occurs.

6. The members of the truss are 6-mm thick angle sections that are attached to 14-mm thick gusset
plates. Determine the maximum allowable P if the ultimate stresses in rivets are 140 MPa for
shear and 280 MPa for bearing stress. All rivets are 25 mm in diameter and an overall factor of
safety of 2 is desired.
7. The frame shown, which is pin-supported at D and E and with a roller at A, supports the 80-kip
load W. Determine the minimum pin diameter if the allowable shear stress in all the pins is 25
ksi and the allowable bearing stress between the members and the pins is 40 ksi. The members
have a cross sectional dimension of 10 x 5 in2.

Problem 6
8. The can crusher consists of two links AB (20mm x 5 mm)
and two links AOD, with one pair of the linkages on each
side of the stationary portion as shown. All pins are 10
mm in diameter. Pin B is on the vertical centerline of the
can. Note that the small square projections E of the
moving jaw move in the recessed slots of the fixed frame.
Determine the maximum force P that can be applied at
the handle at D if the ultimate normal stress in AB is 90
MPa and the ultimate shearing stress in all pins is 60 MPa.
An overall factor of safety of 2.5 is desired.

Problem 7

9. A pressurized cylinder has a sealed cover plate fastened with

steel bolts. a) Determine the maximum pressure that can be
applied if the allowable stress in the tank is limited to 7000 psi.
The inside diameter D of the cylinder is 10-in and the thickness
of the cylinder is 0.5 in. b) Applying the maximum pressure, if 20
bolts will be used to fasten the cover plate to the tank,
determine the diameter of bolt required such that the allowable
stress in each bolt is limited to 10000 psi.
10. A boiler is constructed of 0.4-in steel plates that are fastened together at their ends using a 0.4in cover plate and rivets having a diameter of 0.3 in spaced 2 inches apart as shown. If the steam
pressure in the boiler is 75 ksi, determine (a) the circumferential stress in the boilers plate apart
from the seam, (b) the circumferential stress in the cover plate along the line a-a, and (c) the
shear stress in the rivets.
