LEARNING CONTRACT
1. What is the problem or question I will address with this project?
How can I apply what I learn about wilderness medicine to my experiences in Outdoor
Education? How will these practices be applicable?
2. What resources will I need to help find an answer?
I will need the help of my NOLS and WMI instructors to help teach me not only the
proper wilderness medicine practices but how to transfer those practices to daily life as an
outdoor educator.
3. What is my plan to solve this problem or question?
I plan to engage in as many scenarios to practice what it is like not only being the care
giver but also to experience what it is like being the patient. Role playing will allow me to not
only gain the skills necessary to take care of someone in the wilderness but experience how to do
this with a sense of professionalism and ease.
Asking question throughout the lectures will also provide me with a better understanding
of how to apply these skills to my studies and my field.
4. How will I put this project into action? How will I implement this project?
I will constantly be applying wilderness medicine skills by attending this course in
Harrisonburg Virginia for nine days. I will have the opportunity to implement these skills over
the course of the nine days as well as throughout my career as an outdoor educator and
afterwards in extracurricular activities.
5. Explain how this project will provide you with opportunities to work with diverse
populations. (i.e. race, English Language Learners, special needs).
Attending this course will allow me to work with people from a variety of backgrounds
of medical care history and allow us to use these differences to make each other better first
responders. Having my WFR certification will allow me to work with a wide range of
populations. As an outdoor educator I will be working in remote areas in a variety of countries
with people from various backgrounds. Working outdoors presents a large margin for error that
can often result in injury. Knowing how to apply this knowledge of wilderness medicine to a
variety of ages and populations of different cultures will be something I will use on a daily basis.
6. What are the learning outcomes I wish to achieve?
I wish on leave this course with my Wilderness First Responder certification and my CPR
certification. I also wish to gain knowledge on how to deal with extended patient care and care in
different climates.
