INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVE (Lesson Objective)


After the reading of the book The Snowy Day the students will identify the specific
characteristics of Winter by answering questions about Winter and writing their opinion
using linking words in their writing with 95% accuracy.
CCLS/+NYS STANDARDS AND INDICATORS
ELA& Literacy Standard (CCS): Reading: Literature (RL.2.1)
Ask and answer questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate
understanding of key details in a text.
Indicator:
Students will answer questions correctly regarding the details from the book The Snowy
Day.

ELA& Literacy Standard (CCS): Writing (W.2.1)


Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about,
state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g.,
because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement
or section.
Indicator :
Students will write their opinion using linking words about Winter on their ipad using
Powtoon and draw a picture depicting Winter and what activities they may participate in
during Winter.
MOTIVATION (Engaging the Learners)
The teacher will play a Brain Pop Jr. video explaining the characteristics of Winter.

STRATEGIES (Learning Strategies)


Do Now: Students will discuss what they like to do during the Winter season. This will
tap into their prior knowledge about Winter.
Independent Work: Students will write their opinion using linking words about winter on
their iPad using the app Powtoon and draw a scene illustrating Winter.
Group Discussion: Students will be placed into groups of two and discuss the book that
was just read aloud to them.
Read Aloud: Students will read aloud their opinions about Winter and show the class their
illustration from their iPad.
ADAPTATIONS (Exceptionality)
The student who is an English Language Learner will be given visual aids, definitions
and list of the characteristics of Winter.
The student who is visually impaired will be given audio explanation of the
characteristics of winter.
DIFFERENTATION OF INSTRUCTION
Level One: Students will write two sentences regarding the characteristics of winter with
95% accuracy.
Level Two: Students will write three sentences regarding the characteristics of winter
with 95% accuracy.

Level Three: Students will write a paragraph regarding the characteristics of winter with
95% accuracy.
DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES

Students will complete a Do Now in which they will discuss what they like to do

during the Winter season. This will tap into their prior knowledge about Winter.
Students will watch a Brain Pop Jr. video about Winter.
Students will gather in a circle and listen to the teacher as she reads them a book about

Winter.
After the completion of the reading, students will get their iPads and go back to their

desks.
Students will then write three sentences about their opinion regarding winter and the
characteristics of Winter. (How do you feel about winter? What activities do you do in

winter? Do you like winter?)


Students will also draw pictures and use clip art to visually depict the characteristics of
winter. (How do people dress in the winter? How does it feel and what does it look like
outside?)
ASSESSMENT (artifacts and assessment [formal & informal])
Students will write three sentences using linking words about the characteristics of winter
with 95% accuracy.
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
The students will complete a worksheet for homework which will reinforce what they
learned in class about winter. The worksheet is a word scramble.

FOLLOW-UP: DIRECT TEACHER INTERVENTION AND ACADEMIC


ENRICHMENT
Direct Teacher Intervention: The teacher and students will dress up a doll in appropriate
winter clothing. This will help reinforce the characteristics of winter.
Academic Enrichment: The students will create a wordle using words associated with
winter.
