Mundesley Coastwatch Seeing Double.

Mundesley Coastwatch in partnership with: National Coastwatch

Institute and North Norfolk District Council, will be significantly
increasing its Eyes Along the Coast service in Mundesley through the
introduction of a new seasonal look out station at Vale Road.
It has taken a year to bring this vision to reality but thanks to the hard
work of all partners during the detailed assessment phase, the project
will be piloted this August (2016). With an ever increasing need for
beach and inshore water safety to protect our residents and visitors this is
fabulous news for Mundesley Coastwatch and for Mundesley Village.
National Coastwatch Institute is thrilled to be adding another link to the
Eyes Along the Coast chain and will be providing the new look out.
North Norfolk District Council will be providing: the signage, an
emergency phone line and a phone line connecting the new look out to
the existing look out above Mundesley Maritime Museum on Beach
Road.
Mundesley Coastwatch is proud to be leading the way with this
pilot project and will provide the additional Watch Keepers and the
technology required to deliver the role effectively.
All involved in Mundesley Coastwatch were thrilled to receive an early
contribution of 250 from the EDP Community Chest.
If you would like to know more about the service provided by
Mundesley Coastwatch or you wish to make a donation towards its
survival and growth please contact:

the Crab and Lobster festival and I and

cookery skills and inventive servings of seafood and many
enjoying the fruits of their labours!See page...
There are great events coming up over the next two
weekends here in our beautiful part of Norfolk, I will not

Dear Editor
I write regarding the comments of Mr J Thompson
(CROMER) In your CRAB TALES issue 086.
Regarding the Brexit Referendum.
I agree in part with Mr Thompsons comments that
elected officials are frightening and confusing people,
however, Mr Thompson has himself caused peoples
to be concerned by his comments regarding various
countries of the world as mentioned by him. He has
failed to mention Germany which is by definition a
far greater threat than those countries mentioned in
his comments the last two world wars were started by
Germany history proves this fact and it now seems
pretty obvious in our time that their intention is to
overcome as many nations as possible by the back
door. Our prime Minister was recently reported as
being the leader this countries poodle. Mr Thompson
mentioned Russia we must never forget that many
millions of Russians died defeating nazi Germany.
People need to very carefully consider what they
are getting into when they cast their vote in the

referendum. The Choice is REMAIN in a razor wire

separated club run by non elected bureaucrats or
alternatively, BREXIT get Control of our borders,
have our Sovereignty or Political Power back so
that we can make our own laws and not be told how
we can and cannot spend the enormous amount of
cash that we hand over to the EU every year, we
can also have our fishing rights restored and not be
given petty rules on vacuum cleaners, kettles, bent
cucumbers and thousands of other restricting rules
that we are all ordered to comply with.
June 23rd might just be the most important date in all
our lives.
Thank You
Charles Watts Mundesley North Walsham Norfolk.

The Overstrand Gardening Club held

their monthly meeting on Tuesday 3rd
May. The speaker was Shelagh Ashe, the
illustrated talk was called Gertrude Jekyll
The Legendary Gardener.
Gertrude Jekyll is remembered for being a
celebrated horticulturist, garden designer,
artist and writer of books and articles for
magazines.
She is also remembered for her association
with the Art and Crafts movement and her
work with the famous architect Sir Edwin
Lutyens.
The talk highlighted that she showed
great attention to the colour schemes of
her gardens, and plants were planted in
drifts. Her gardens showed her artistic
talent for colour and the choice of various
textures, also her plantsmanship, artistry
and philosophy.
The talk gave a wonderful insight into
this renowned lady and was very well
received, and showed that Gertrude Jekyll
was and is a true inspiration to gardeners.
Our talk next month is on Tuesday 7th
June and is called Norfolk Saffron Its
Cultivation and Use. The speaker is
Dr Sally Francis. The meeting starts at
2.30pm at Overstrand Parish Hall, The
Londs.

STORM SURGE DAMAGE

TO MUNDESLEY

Dramatic pictures show the damage

caused by the recent storm surge to the
beach at Mundesley.
Both Cardiac Hill behind Trafalger
Court and Vale Road behind Ingleside
suffered significant damage to the cliffs
and the path and approaches to the beach.
These two access points are important
with the Holiday Season just starting as
much of the holiday accomodation in the
village is situated in the Northern part and
would leave holidaymakers facing a bit of
a hike into the Centre to access the beach
via the Green.
Tidy up action has already begun with
fingers crossed that weather conditions
will remain fair and further damage will
not occur.

A LITTLE LIGHT RELIEF......

A tap on the shoulder

A true story(maybe) from the pages of the
Manchester, NH Evening News:
Last Wednesday a passenger in a taxi
heading for the airport
leaned over to ask the driver a question
and gently tapped him on the
shoulder to get his attention.
The driver screamed, lost control of the
cab, nearly hit a bus, drove
up over the curb and stopped just inches
from a large plate window.
For a few moments everything was silent
in the cab. Then, the shaking
driver said, Are you OK? Im so sorry,
but you scared the daylights
out of me.
The badly shaken passenger apologized to
the driver and said, I
didnt realize that a mere tap on the
shoulder would startle someone so
badly.
The driver replied, No, no, Im the one
who is sorry, its entirely
my fault. Today is my very first day
driving a cab. Ive been driving a
hearse for 25 years.

THE STRANGE CASE OF

THE SEEPING STREET

In August of 2015 reports were made of

water seeping up through the street on
the seafront road in Mundesley between

The combined wisdom of the Highway

Anglian Water were pressed into action.
After a mere two months the growing dip
in the road was addressed but the seepage
continued unabated.

we saw real action. Was this the answer?

Pre-diabetes What Is It?

Many of you will have heard the term pre-diabetes over the past few years, some of
you may already have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes so lets try to answer some
of your questions.

What is pre-diabetes?

Pre-diabetes is the term clinicians use when a patients blood sugars are elevated but
not enough to be diagnosed with diabetes. In the past, doctors have used terms such as
impaired glucose tolerance, impaired fasting glycaemia and metabolic syndrome
to describe this group of patients. Clinicians are now using the term pre-diabetes to
describe this condition.

How common is pre-diabetes?

It is estimated that over a third of adults in the UK have pre-diabetes (approx. 35%).
This figure has risen significantly since 2003 when it was estimated that approximately
11.6 % of adults had pre-diabetes.

What does pre-diabetes mean for the patient?

Having pre-diabetes places you at a significantly higher risk of developing type 2

diabetes.

Does having pre-diabetes mean I will definitely develop diabetes?

No . Having prediabetes means you are more likely but not guaranteed to develop
type 2 diabetes.

Will I have pre-diabetes for ever?

Not necessarily, patients with pre-diabetes who undertake appropriate lifestyle changes
such as weight loss, healthy diet and increased exercise may see a reduction in their
blood sugar levels. This reduction in blood sugar level could mean that patients who
have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes may see their sugar levels return to the level of a
person who does not have pre-diabetes.

How do I know if I have pre-diabetes?

Most patients with pre-diabetes do not experience any symptoms. Pre-diabetes is

normally diagnosed either as an incidental finding when having blood tests for other
reasons or when they have routine health checks.

Who is at risk of having pre-diabetes?

Being overweight and having a large waist size are both a primary risk factor for prediabetes (and diabetes).
Inactivity The less active you are, the greater your risk of pre-diabetes.
Age. Although diabetes can develop at any age, the risk of pre-diabetes does increase
as you get older, especially after age 45.
Family history .The risk of prediabetes (and diabetes) increases if an immediate
biological family member has type 2 diabetes.

Can I find out if I have pre-diabetes?

If you have concerns about pre-diabetes you should contact your GP surgery to find out
if you are eligible for a health check.

The Cinnamon Trust

In a nutshell, its a charity which enables the elderly and/ or

terminally ill to continue living with their valued companion
until the very end.

For many elderly people, a pet is a constant companion in lives

diminished by poor health, loss and loneliness. When owners
fall ill, anxiety over their animals welfare (and future) triggers
extreme anxiety. Reducing these fears in fact, eliminating them
- is exactly where the Cinnamon Trust can step in. Throughout
the UK, 15,000 volunteers provide practical help when any
aspect of daily pet care such as dog walking for a housebound
owner becomes a problem. For many elderly pet lovers, the
Cinnamon Trust is a life line. The pet remains happy; so too the
owner.
Worrying about what will happen to a pet on ones death or if
one is admitted to a residential home where no pets are allowed
- is a huge anxiety that the Trust can eliminate. Animals are
either re-homed with long term foster carers (for whom all preauthorised veterinary expenses are paid by the Trust), or given a
home at one of the Trusts two animal sanctuaries. Arrangements
are made reassuringly well in advance, so that owners have peace
of mind knowing that their beloved companion will have a safe
and happy future. The Trust also offers short term care in the
event, say, of an owner facing a spell in hospital. Care doesnt
stop at dogs: cats, bird, rabbits are all provided for by the Trust.
The Cinnamon Trust always needs more walkers. If you have an
hour, two hours, or even half an hour to offer a week, please step
forward. Walkers are carefully vetted via three references, and
undergo on-going appraisal. They are allotted jobs that will suit
their particular circumstances, and are given careful guidance by
the Trust.
Combine the joy of walking a dog with the knowledge that one is
alleviating a huge worry from an owner struggling to look after
a beloved companion, and this is a highly worthwhile charity to
support. If you are interested in volunteering, please phone 01736
758707. The website is www.cinnamon.or.uk.
Its also worth saying that, if you know of anyone living in
Norfolk, who might be interested in volunteering, please tell
them to get in touch. The Cinnamon Trust is particularly needy of
volunteers living in the countryside, and would welcome hearing
from them too.

Fenellaschow Chow Rescue:UPDATE

SCOOBY the 8 year old rescue chow chow with Calcinosis Cutis
has now been diagnosed with Cushings Syndrome. This means
he needs the cortisol levels checked every few weeks with blood
tests. This disease is not curable but he is now taking medication
to help control this. Once the levels are stable, SCOOBY will be
able to travel to Yorkshire to have his large neck and face lesions
removed. This delicate surgery will be performed at the original
James Herriot Practice. The operation will be performed by a
wonderful veterinary surgeon who has helped dogs in Scoobys
condition. We are now fundraising to help pay for Scoobys
surgery.
MAYA the rescue chow also residing at The Old Chow Rescue
Home is doing well. Her eye operation has made her eyes clear
and free from being damaged by her eyelashes/fur. She can see
images slightly when she is near to them. Her corneas are lighter
in colour now and she is no longer in pain. She does however
find the bright sunshine rather a glare so at times her eyes are
protected.
BARBIE is on her way looking for a new forever loving home.
Shes nearly 4 years of age and has slight hip dysplacia . She
suffered bloat a few months ago but has totally recovered having
had immediate surgery. We are hoping to raise funds for her
veterinary surgery for spaying and travel to arrive in England
safely.
We would like to thank all the members of the public whom have
supported the rescue chows .
Looking forward to seeing everyone at our stall at Cromer
Carnival by the Dog Show ring side in August.
Please do bring any spare clean towels you have for the chow
chows.
If anyone is interested in giving a rescue chow a forever loving
home, giving a donation to help SCOOBY or BARBIE , or
offering any spare towels and needing collection, please do contact
Fenella. Tel mobile 07788885091.

Trampolining, football, roller skating, pirates, capture the flag,

dodgeball and an activity day are all on offer this coming spring
half term for youngsters seeking active fun.
The activities will be held at North Walsham Sports Centre, run
by North Norfolk District Council, from Tuesday, May 31, to
Friday, June 3.

Dear Editor,

CROMER...A SMALL TOWN WITH A

GLOBAL REACH

The Cromer 8 art trail group, can claim to have sold artwork that now hangs in
over nineteen countries on five continents across the world.
Each year, more and more people from Cromer to Canberra, visit the artists
studios during the Norfolk Open Studios event which is held in May each year, to
see what our local talent has to offer.
The trail artists are all from in and around Cromer and those taking part this year
are ..
Gita Dickenson, Bob Crook, Sue Hammans, Keith Nash, Robert Downie, Leslie
Hawkes Nockels, Joy Cole, Norman Mackie and Brian Weinle.
During the first week of Open studios, (week commencing 30th May), some of
the above artists will be giving free demonstrations at the Garden House Gallery,
in Garden Street, and the Cromer Tourist Information Centre, adjacent to the
towns main car park.
Open Studios brochures, showing where artists studios can be located, together
with Cromer 8 trail leaflets be will available at numerous venues in and around
Cromer, well before the event. The brochure and leaflet, shows the times that
various studios are open, in order for you to plan your trip.
This year, to enhance the experience for those following the Cromer Art Trail, the
cromer 8 have partnered with several excellent eating establishments in the area,
and locations for these refreshment stops are shown on said leaflets.
The Cromer 8 consists of a mixture of successful professional and amateur artists,
working in various media and with an eclectic mix of styles. Visitors to each
studio will be able to not only see the artwork, but discuss their art with the artist
and in some cases see the artist work.
If you enjoy the visual arts, then you are in for a treat!

North Norfolk District Council bin

collection Bank Holiday changes

Bin collections across the District will be one day later than usual
due to the Bank Holiday on May 30.
All collections in the week commencing Monday May 30 will
be one day later than usual. Everything goes back to the usual
collection days from Monday June 6.
Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett Cabinet Member
for Environmental Services said:
We always work hard to ensure our
bin collection changes cause as little
disruption as possible. We hope that by
spreading the word early, communities
across North Norfolk will be prepared for
their bin collection day to be one day later
than usual.

George the Second donates to

Cromer RNLI

Last month Cromer RNLI had an unusual request regarding a bequest of a

Swaffham man who died in March. George Atkinson was keen that money be
donated to Cromer RNLI. Relatives of a gentleman affectionately known as
George the Second contacted the station to inform them that George had died
just two weeks before his 105th birthday.
Despite more than 90 years of attempts, the 104-year-old had never backed a
winner at the Grand National. He had once again hoped to turn his luck around
when he planned to place a bet on his 105th birthday in February 2016.
George had led a very full life, serving in the forces during the second world war.
These experiences had given him a long respect and interest for the RNLI and
George was always keen to hear about the work carried out at Cromers lifeboat
station. Members of the crew had visited him in his home to talk about recent
launches. Barry Willett Georges grandson in law visited the station to present
a cheque to Cromer RNLI. Barry said
George was an inspiration to everyone
and always had a positive outlook on life.
Until last year George was to be found
at his local supermarket on his mobility
scooter collecting money for the RNLI.
We have now carried out his last request
that this wonderful organisation should
benefit.
