TOGETHER
FOR THE WORLD
Janet and | attended the annual Southern Baptist Convention last
week. Our congregations are able to do more together than they
could do separately, joining more than 50,000 cooperating
churches and church-type missions to impact the world. For 170
years, Southern Baptists have expanded beyond regional
identification to become the largest protestant denomination in
the nation and an incredible force for good and God worldwide.
Regardless of race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, language,
church size or locale, we have collectively chosen to hold to biblical
interpretation and conservative ethics.
While we are not creedal people, we are a confessional people with
a consensus of core doctrines, standards, and practices. We have
put our faith in Christ demonstrated by water baptism. We believe
in and teach the Bible as God's inerrant and inspired Word. It is by
the Gospel of Jesus, because of His gospel, and for it that we exist.
Southern Baptists provide not only training in universities, but also
give a powerful demonstration of practical compassion in times of
disaster, family issues, and community upheaval. Good deeds
follow sound doctrine. Passion for missions and evangelism has
always characterized us. In the first 15 years of the 21st Century, our
churches reported more than 4 million baptisms in the U.S. alone.
While our International Mission Board works overseas, the North
American Mission Board has a goal to see a net gain of 5,000 new
congregations in the U.S. and Canada by 2022.
As local, autonomous congregations, we are not told who to call as
pastors or how much to give. We prayerfully cooperate with
like-minded churches by the Cooperative Program to fund
regional, state, and national missions and conventions. At FBCN,
we give a large percentage of our budget to the Cooperative
Program and then raise an additional amount for the Kingdoms
Missions Offering to help over 30 partnership ministries. As Paul
said, “The collection for the saints was directed to the churches"
with “gifts” being dispersed and administered (1 Corinthians
16:1-3). We also regularly send out mission teams to work within
and outside the Convention network, like the apostle who wrote,
“Help me on my journey wherever | go...a wide door for effective
work is opened" (1 Corinthians 16:6, 9). “The love of Christ compels
us" (2 Corinthians 5:14)...together for Him and them.
