painter,andexpertintherenderingofallthatgoesupontheseaandalongits
shores.Hispastels,summaryandeconomic,garneredthesplendideulogyof
BaudelaireandCorotcalledhimthe"kingoftheskies".[1]

BornatHonfleur,Boudinwasthesonofaharborpilot,andatage
10theyoungboyworkedonasteamboatthatranbetweenLe
HavreandHonfleur.In1835thefamilymovedtoLeHavre,where
Boudin'sfatheropenedastoreforstationeryandpictureframes.
HeretheyoungEugeneworked,lateropeninghisownsmallshop.
Boudin'sfatherhadthusabandonedseafaring,andhissongaveit
uptoo,havingnorealvocationforit,thoughhepreservedtohis
lastdaysmuchofasailor'scharacter:frankness,accessibility,and
openheartedness.
Inhisshop,inwhichpictureswereframed,Boudincameinto
contactwithartistsworkingintheareaandexhibitedintheshop
thepaintingsofConstantTroyonandJeanFranoisMillet,who,
alongwithJeanBaptisteIsabeyandThomasCouturewhomhemet
duringthistime,encouragedyoungBoudintofollowanartistic

career.Attheageof22heabandonedtheworldofcommerce,startedpaintingfulltime,andtraveledtoParis
thefollowingyearandthenthroughFlanders.In1850heearnedascholarshipthatenabledhimtomoveto
Paris,althoughheoftenreturnedtopaintinNormandyand,from1855,maderegulartripstoBrittany.
Dutch17thcenturymastersprofoundlyinfluencedhim,andonmeeting
theDutchpainterJohanJongkind,whohadalreadymadehismarkin
Frenchartisticcircles,Boudinwasadvisedbyhisnewfriendtopaint
outdoors(enpleinair).HealsoworkedwithTroyonandIsabey,andin
1859metGustaveCourbetwhointroducedhimtoCharlesBaudelaire,
thefirstcritictodrawBoudinstalentstopublicattentionwhentheartist
madehisdebutatthe1859ParisSalon.
In1857/58BoudinbefriendedtheyoungClaudeMonet,thenonly18,
andpersuadedhimtogiveuphisteenagecaricaturedrawingsandto
SailboatsatTrouville,1884,Yale
becomealandscapepainter,helpingtoinstillinhimaloveofbright
UniversityArtGallery,Collectionof
huesandtheplayoflightonwaterlaterevidentinMonet's
Mr.andMrs.PaulMellon.
Impressionistpaintings.ThetworemainedlifelongfriendsandMonet
laterpaidtributetoBoudinsearlyinfluence.BoudinjoinedMonetand
hisyoungfriendsinthefirstImpressionistexhibitionin1873,butneverconsideredhimselfaradicalor
innovator.
Boudinsgrowingreputationenabledhimtotravelextensivelyinthe
1870s.HevisitedBelgium,theNetherlandsandsouthernFrance,and
from1892to1895maderegulartripstoVenice.Hecontinuedtoexhibit
attheParisSalons,receivingathirdplacemedalattheParisSalonof
1881,andagoldmedalatthe1889ExpositionUniverselle.In1892
BoudinwasmadeaknightoftheLgiond'honneur,asomewhattardy
recognitionofhistalentsandinfluenceontheartofhiscontemporaries.
LateinhislifehereturnedtothesouthofFranceasarefugefromill
health,andrecognizingsoonthatthereliefitcouldgivehimwasalmost
spent,hereturnedtohishomeatDeauville,todiewithinsightof
ChannelwatersandundertheChannelskieshehadpaintedsooften.
