My Core Skills For Work Competency

and protocols

At my part-time job in KFC being a Team Member led by Managers, I had to

adhere to plenty of rules and workplace policies to ensure my safety and
hygiene from gloves or hairnets as well as delivering professional customer
service with smiles and manners. I had trouble in adhering to the rules as I keep
forgetting the policies, leading me to be lectured and constantly reminded to
keep to the rules.
In order to improve my standing in the workplace, I decided to take notes and
memorise important workplace policies and rules at home while practising it at
workdays. For example, I would say to myself, Use gloves for handling food
or Keep away food from chemicals whenever packing food or cleaning up the
restaurant. I also talked to my managers and other colleagues to help me
refresh my memory of the rules.
Thanks to my efforts, I was able to work smoothly and strictly in keeping with
KFCs workplace policies. Moreover, I was getting less scolded often and
managed to work faster while keeping in line with the policies as much as
possible. Mistakes happen from time to time but I would go back again to my
notes and memorise the rules in order to minimise errors as well as workplace
conflicts with other colleagues or managers. It taught me the importance of
adherence to rules.
My adherence to strict protocols and work procedures rules is compatible with
my long-term career goal of becoming a Professional Surveyor. My preference
for hierarchy and order allows me to easily understand and apply many of the
rules and policies possibly present in Surveying from the necessary safety
equipment, appropriate Surveying instruments bought and sticking to

construction plan to accomplish tasks. My insistence on rules allows me to work

safely in Surveying, particularly presence of hazards like falling equipment,
heights or machineries.
Last year when I was in year 11 Biology, we were assigned an important
laboratory experiment and investigation write-up studying the effects of grey
water and distilled waters effects on plant growth. Sorted into 3-man teams, I
had trouble connecting with my team members and often gotten into arguments
with each other due to behavioural differences.
In order to solve the problem, we agree to put aside our differences temporarily
and cooperate in finishing the report and designing the experimental apparatus.
We decided to stop joking or arguing one another, talking with one another
entirely about the experiment to maintain our concentration and discipline. We
delegated roles for the work also. For example, I took upon in writing the main
experimental apparatus, the methodology and the quantitative data we were
collecting. One of my team members agreed in collecting the needed grey
water from home, composed of detergents and normal water. Another was
responsible in observations and recording measurements. After performing the
experiment, we would agree on weekly recording of plants height differences,
as the investigation was nearly a school-term long.
Thanks to my fellow peers and my efforts, we were able to catch up with others
groups at work pace and managed to stop our teacher from checking us
constantly to keep us in line with the work. We were able to settle our
differences and had been in good terms since. Though we didnt make close
friends, we fostered a sense of healthy respect for each other. This
investigation teamwork taught me the importance of mutual cooperation for the
sake of a common goal despite differences in peoples behaviours and
intentions.
My teamwork skills are especially useful for my ambition to become a
professional surveyor. As a surveyor, I would be required to work for a variety of

clients from private, public or government sectors with different work

requirements and demands. Similarly, I would be working alongside with
construction workers, engineers, architects, managers or stakeholders
accompanying my projects. My ability to connect and work with others allows
me to fit in exactly with the extrovert-driven and open personality required for
surveying in order to understand and cooperate with each other.
Only last term we held our school ball towards the last 2 weeks of term 1 at
Wyatt Hotel, Perth at late evening. There were problems in persuading my
classmates to join and build a new group, as they were unsure which kind of
limousine services theyll take.
To improve the situation, I spent the next 3-week researching about all possible
limousine services from their prices, car models and limousine features like
drinks or music. Eventually I found a limousine that costs $85 per individual,
costing at about $1020.00 as Im bringing 12 people with drinks provided and
monitor screens in-built. Further on, I began recruiting several more of my
classmates persuading them of the affordable price and the entertainment
features present on the limousine. Those who were interested I asked for their
numbers and those who werent unsure I gave them 2 more weeks to make
their final decisions. In a week before the School Balls, we discussed the
meeting and time of place in front of the school, arriving at 4.30 pm and
departing by 5.30 pm.
As a result of my efforts and asking their advice, I managed to hire a limousine
for my group, which was able to take us to the school ball venue as well as to
landmarks around Perth to take photographs. The event also taught me how
the most daunting of all tasks can be overtaken through careful planning and
organisation of the event, as well as resources required to complete a task.
Additionally, I have learned that sole organisation doesnt have to be managed
by one individual, asking advice and support for direction by peers enabled me
to be specific and efficient in my organising of the event.

In the context of Professional Surveying, my efficiency in planning and

organising would be useful in managing and arranging the extensive as well as
the diverse resources used in Surveying. I can use my planning and organising
in preparing sources like the manpower, safety equipment and precautions,
funds as well as the necessary surveying instruments and technologies used for
projects. My usefulness in planning and organising extends even further in
considering management roles in Surveying e.g. being a Foreman or Supervisor
that could oversee a construction project besides surveying.
