Robson Statement on Veto of Raw Milk Bill

Sen. Judy Robson issued the following statement regarding Gov. Jim Doyle’s veto
of Senate Bill 434 relating to the sale of raw milk. Robson, a registered nurse,
previously asked Doyle to veto the bill:

“I do not believe that Wisconsin should have a law that could put children and
adults at risk of serious illness and possible death due to raw milk contaminated
with bacteria. Between 1998 and 2008, 85 outbreaks of human infections resulting
from consumption of raw milk were reported to the CDC. These resulted in 1,614
reported illnesses, 187 hospitalizations and two deaths.

“Another downside to drinking raw milk that many people overlook is that it has
little Vitamin D. Processed milk is typically fortified with Vitamin D to build
strong bones and help protect against heart disease, cancer and other diseases. The
addition of Vitamin D is especially important in northern states like Wisconsin
where we have limited access to natural Vitamin D from the sun.

“Research shows no meaningful difference in the nutritional value of pasteurized

milk versus raw milk and no evidence that pasteurized milk causes conditions like
lactose intolerance or allergic reactions.

“Wisconsin is known as America’s Dairyland. Our wholesome reputation is in

part due to the fact that the milk and other dairy products produced here are safe
and disease-free.”
