Causative
Make, Have, Get
The using of causative make, have, get
Make, have, get can be used to express idea that “x”
causes “y” to do something.
When they are used as causative verb, their meanings
are similiar but not identical.

1. Causative Make
Pattern : make + simple form of verb
Means: Force someone to do something.
Example: She made me read the letter loudly.
2. Causatives Have
Causative can used in 2 forms, they are active and pasive.
a. Causative have in active form

Subject + have/ has + object (complement) + V1 (without to)

Example: The teacher has the students bring some books.

b. Causative have in pasive form

S + have/ has + O (complement) + V3

Example: I wanted to have my bag cleaned.


3. Causative Get
Causative Get can be used in 2 forms that are passive and active. But
in that way, verb after have is bare infinitive (verb
without to), while verb after get is verb with to (infinitive with to).

a. Causative get in active form


Pattern: S + get + O (complement) + to + V1
Examples: My mother got me to buy t- shirt yesterday.
She gets her friend to visit her.

b. Causative get in passive form


Pattern: S + get + O (complement) + V3
Examples: Father got his car repaired
I got my handphone sold.
