Abraham Lincoln

Biographical Info
• Born on February 12, 1809 on a farm in Hardin County
Kentucky.
• There he lived with his mother and father in a single room log
cabin until 1815, when they were forced to move by court
action to Perry County, Indiana.
• Growing up Lincoln had very limited schooling only for a
period of about 18 months, so most of his education was self
taught. He was an avid reader which helped him with
learning.
• In 1842 Lincoln married Mary Todd in which they bore four
sons.
Lincoln’s Presidency
• Lincoln became the 16th president of the United States on
November 6, 1860.
• In his first term of presidency he ran for preserving the Union
and for stopping the spread of slavery into the new territories.
• When Lincoln’s first term came to an end he decided to run
for re-election. This time he ran for unconditional surrender
of the south and a permanent end of slavery.
• Lincoln was responsible for keeping our nation together in a
time of crisis and leading the Union to victory in the Civil War.
Lincoln’s Death
• On April 14, 1865 while attending a play at Ford’s Theater, Lincoln was
shot by John Wilkes Booth, a famous actor at the time.
• After shooting the president in the back of the head, Wilkes Booth
managed to escape.
• Booth was found twelve days after assassination in a Virginia barn house.
He was eventually cornered and was shot which led to his death soon
after.
• After Lincoln died, he would be remembered as one of the United States
most important presidents.
• Lincoln was viewed not only as martyr but also as one of the greatest
American presidents.
