Chapter 20 Notes

 Progressive era was a time of great change (approx. 1900)

 Lots of scientific investigation
 Religious idea – social gospel brings teachings of church into life
 Muckrakers – people (journalists/authors) who revealed startling truths
 Types of reform – political (council form of gov. Galveston tx, referendum and recall),
womens (suffrage, rise in feminism), labor (triangle shirtwaist fire, workers insurance),
racial.
 TR, war hero, progressive thinker who is given vice-president’s post to keep him
contained. McKinley dies September 14 (gunshot on 9/6) trust busting, solve coal strike
(first president to get deeply involved), railroad regulation, regulation of industry like
meat-packing, square deal (nat. resources, corporate regulation, consumer protection).
 TR picks successor in Taft, but he is betrayed. Taft pretended like he would continue
progressive. Taft is picked by republicans so TR makes “bull moose” party.
 With all of drama with republicans, Woodrow Wilson and democrats went on to easy
win.
 Wilson’s “new freedom”(reform program, stronger gov., corporations could be big but
not too powerful)
 Wilson lowers tariff to 25% from 40%, makes central bank, broke up trusts that
“substantially lessen competition or tended to create a monopoly”(pg 667)
