Chapter 20: Photosynthesis
“From Light to Food…”

Generative Topic:
“From Light to Food…”

Understanding Goals
UG 1: Students will understand photosynthesis is the process by which plants
manufacture carbohydrates using raw materials.
UG 2: Students will understand that the primary food source in a food chain to the green
plant.
UG 3: Students will show an understanding of the conditions necessary for
photosynthesis.
UG 4: Students will show an understanding of how plants take in carbon dioxide and
remove oxygen.
UG 5: Students will show an understanding of the importance of photosynthesis in the
cycle of life

Introductory PoU:
o Get into groups of 2-3 for today’s activity.
o Select a picture related to today’s topic from your teacher.
o In your groups, get into a discussion about the picture. Use the following thinking
routine: “I see…I think…I wonder…” Each member in the group will take turn to
share their observations using the thinking routine.
o Be prepared to share your group’s thoughts with the rest of the class at the end of 5
minutes.

Guided-Inquiry PoU
o Using the both the print and non-print resources available in the library, your group
will need to find out more about photosynthesis.
o Use the following questions as a guide:
• What is the sun’s role in photosynthesis?
• How do plants absorb carbon dioxide?
• What is chlorophyll, and what does it do?
• How is glucose created?
• Why do plants release oxygen?
• Why are plants beneficial to human?

o Please note down all the references which you have used in your research.

Culminating PoU – Final work will be graded (15 marks)

o Each group will be given a piece of A3 size paper and coloured markers.
o All information gathered must be presented in the form of either a mind-map or a
comic strip.
o The final product must contain key words and include drawings or diagrams to help
illustrate the concept on photosynthesis.
