• Materials
• Definition of wave
Wave is disturbance spreading with definite energy from one place to
another
A mechanical wave is wave requiring a medium
An electromagnetic wave needs no medium
• Kinds of waves
Transversal wave is wave that the direction of the movement of a certain
kind of perpendicular to the direction of its vibration
wavelength(λ ) crest
amplitude
Equilibrium position
trough
rarefactions compressions
Frequency is the number of waves passing definite in one second.
Symbolized of frequency is f
Unit of frequency is 1/second or hertz( Hz)
Spreads velocity of waves is the distance travelled by the wave in one
second.
Symbolized of spreads velocity of wave is v
Unit of spreads velocity of wave is m/s (ms-1 )

• EXAMPLE
1. A wave on a rope has a wavelength of 1.2 m an a frequency of 4.5 Hz.
What is its spreads velocity?
Given:
λ = 1.2 m
f = 4.5 Hz
Ask :
v=….?
Solution:
v = λ f = 1.2 m (4.5 Hz) = 5.4 m/s
2. A flute produces a sound wave with a wavelength of 0.20 m and
spread velocity of 340 m/s. What is its frequency?
Given:
λ = 0.20 m
v = 340 m/s
Ask :
f=….?
Solution:
v 340 m / s
f = = = 1700 Hz
λ 0.20 m
• EXERCISE
1. A radio station work at frequency 75 Hz, with wavelength 4 m. At the
same time another radio station makes program also, if its wavelength
is 3 m with the same wave velocity to that radio station. What is
frequency of this radio station?
2. A slinky of length 4 m is vibrated produces longitudinal wave with
distance of compression and rarefaction consecutively is 30 cm.
