KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan (Aug. 18,
2010) – The Army's top engineer made a trip here
yesterday and addressed a team of deployed
engineers.

Lt. Gen. Robert L. Van Antwerp, U.S. Army chief of

engineers and commanding general of the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers, discussed what
engineers are accomplishing all over the world, and
thanked the 579th Engineer Detachment (Forward
Engineer Support Team - Main) for all they do in
Afghanistan.

“It’s great being over here,” he said. “Everywhere

we go over here I can’t tell you how much people
say, ‘I’m so proud of what the engineers do.’ In fact, Col. Richard W. Dean, left, commander of the 579th Engineer Detachment
everything they keep telling us is, ‘When are you (FEST-M), and Lt. Gen. Robert L. Van Antwerp, U.S. Army chief of

now by lamenting on the many projects USACE is
currently involved with in the U.S. and overseas.

The Corps of Engineers currently handles about $45 billion worth of military projects on about 100 Army posts and
60 Air Force bases, according to Van Antwerp.

“It’s just a recognition of how important the engineers are,” he said. “I think you’d be proud of engineers all over the
world and everything that’s going on.”

Van Antwerp was especially proud of all the engineers currently deployed in support of overseas contingency
operations.

“So I want to tell you all thanks,” he said. “You’re just really knocking it out of the park. I couldn’t be more proud of
you. So keep up the great work. Thanks for what you do.”
